Casting from phone to TV without Wifi [R]

4 months, 1 week agobluesmokewizard posted submission on techsupport.

I'm wondering if possible?

I do have internet, but it's Hughesnet, the only thing available in my area. I can use my phone (Samsung Galaxy S9+ with unlimited data) as a mobile hotspot to stream shows and movies on HBONow but it's still spotty... not as bad as trying to do it through Hughesnet, but not great.

If I stream on my phone, it works flawlessly, but I cant Chromecast unless the phone is connect to wifi. Is there any way to get around this? My phone screen may be plenty big, but I'd rather binge Game of Thrones on my 65" flatscreen...

If your TV is spotty when using your mobile phone as a hotspot I would doubt chromecasting to it would any better.

Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-uni-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook/dp/B075V68NVR would be a much better solution for your situation.

Can a 15" MBP 2017 run a 144hz external monitor? [R]

I own a 2017 15" MBP as well as a USB-C to HDMI 2.0 cable.

I'm planning to get the DELL S2417DG monitor (1440p 165hz G-Sync) because I really want to experience the 144hz+ goodness.

Will I be able to do so?

Right... so USB C to DP would work but not USB C to HDMI (cause I own this cable).

One of these adapters is HDMI to DVI, and the other is DVI to HDMI. Settle an argument between my team: which is which? [R]

Been a couple comments, i'll put my thoughts and justification now:

I argue the top is DVI to HDMI and bottom is HDMI to DVI because i consider them converting a port to match a cable.

edit: for what it's worth, apple, amazon, walrmart, and belkin all list the male end as 'from' and the female end as 'to'

New to the note - question about Dex [R]

My new note arrives tomorrow and I'm very excited. I'd really like to make use of the presentation features because it's something I have to do a lot in my job.

I've been looking at the Samsung website and dex sounds great but I don't know if I need to buy a dock, a special cable or just any usb c to HDMI.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Output to two monitors [R]

I am getting a T480s for work.

What is the cheapest way I can output to two monitors? The official lenovo docks are very expensive, surely there are cheaper ways?

10 months, 2 weeks agoikbeneenheld posted comment on thinkpad.

You already have one hdmi right on the t480s so you only need one for 2 screens.

I have no recommendations but anything should work so you probably find something on amazon that is like $40 or cheaper.

Edit: this should work: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V68NVR/ref=s9acsdtophdbwb3I4HzPcrxw?pfrdm=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pfrds=merchandised-search-3&pfrdr=QFBDKMHNNZ8F7QB0CN2N&pfrdt=101&pfrdp=fe4484a2-46db-5fe2-bdae-eb8d57fe6fe0&pfrd_i=3015395011

Galaxy S9 USB-C to HDMI [R]

I purchased a generic multi port adaptor, in retrospect it was mainly aimed at the usb-c only macbooks. Additional information, when I connect I get the same information as if I was connection two phones together, ie transfer files, photos, charge either phone. It doesn't seem to recognise the hdmi.I would have thought that it should work, as it is a generic version of generally standard adopter, Samsung sells its own version. But I digress, am I a brick and it should work or is there some magic apple voodoo on the adaptor.

What combination of dongles and cables will I need to run 2 external 4k monitors @ 60hz on a 2017 Macbook Pro? [R]

11 months, 1 week agodesignerspit posted submission on mac.
Aug. 11, 2018

I received a 2017 Macbook Pro from my work and it's pretty great, but I'd like to be able to run 2 additional external monitors for more screen real estate. I checked the Apple FAQs but it honestly just confused me, saying I would need a third party adapter to run at 60hz over HDMI2.0. There's so many freaking adapters to choose from on Amazon and they're all from companies I've never heard of...

So does anyone have any recommendations on what kind of attachments and dongles I'd need to get my 2 monitors running at 60hz? I'd appreciate any help I could get.

Yoga 720 external monitor gaming [R]

I got a USB-HDMI adapter for my wife's 720 15", and it doesn't work very well (screen flickering on several monitors and laptops tested). It doesn't play games, let alone display the desktop correctly. Is there anything for this computer that would make it possible to play games on an external monitor without going the eGPU route?

Type C to HDMI out, Any Issues? [R]

Hey Guys, I've been trying to find a Type C to HDMI cable that worked well for my phone. I've tried two so far and got really sporadic results :( has anyone had any luck with doing this?

Image keeps cutting in and out, or sometimes wont even detect that there's a display. Or Phone wont see that it's docked. Thankfully amazons return policy is great, but I'd be nice if Razer also had something like Samsungs Dex :/

Can someone please explain why GPU performance on my SB2 15" is 3x worse when using an external display? [R]

1 year, 6 months agobe77solo posted submission on Surface.
Jan. 17, 2018

I've tried both my Surface Dock to mDP and the official MS USB-C to HDMI adapter...either way, the GPU performance is significantly worse when connected to an external display. e.g. my 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme score is 1789 when connected to my monitor and 4427 when not. Feel like this is a real deal breaker for those with a Surface Book looking to occasionally game on their desktop monitor.

That's not right at all, wish I had an explanation or fix! I use an external monitor (Dell U3415W 3440x1440p) as well as the SB2 internal screen simultaneously (extended desktop) using a USB-C to HMDI adapter and get no lag or performance loss on my SB2 15". I am even gaming right now (X-Plane 11, very CPU/GPU intense, middle of a flight on autopilot) on the Dell monitor while typing this with multiple other pages/browsers open along with Excel/Outlook on the SB2 internal screen.

Additionally, I've played a lot of my demanding games on the external monitor without any issues (ARMA 3, RTCW, Battlefield 1 etc), no performance drops or lag like you describe. It's seamless and smooth like I would expect, same as my desktop or previous laptop experiences. Performance on the external Dell is actually better than the internal screen at native resolution simply because it has a lower screen resolution.

Problems playing Cuphead??? That's nuts, its smooth as butter on me end internal or external.

I'm using this adapter with a generic HDMI cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V68NVR/ref=ohauidetailpageo05s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I did not have great results using the Surface Dock when gaming, with or without an external monitor... it simply didn't provide enough power and it resulted in serious battery drain which as I continued to game caused a weird screen tearing effect and unstability. MS REALLY needs to update the Dock.

I have no idea why using the MS USB-C to HDMI adapter wouldn't provide a great experience though when plugged in using the provided 102W power adapter. You shouldn't be seeing anything like you are describing; I'm sure not.

I'm in the UK, but have a 15" pre-ordered for Feb. If I can't make the 1060 work with dual external 1440p monitors, it's going straight back too!

Question on surface book 2 and ultra wide monitors [R]

1 year, 6 months agobe77solo posted submission on Surface.
Jan. 11, 2018

So from the title, you probably guessed I’ll ask if the surface book 2 supports ultra wide monitors running at 3440x1440 res and you guessed right. Hopefully a dock isn’t required in this situation because that means you’re limited to just browsing the web and watching movies off the ultra wide as the dock doesn’t supply enough power for any intensive activities without majorly draining the battery.

1 year, 6 months agobe77solo posted comment on Surface.
Jan. 11, 2018

A 3440x1440 monitor works great, no dock needed with the SB2. I'm using a USB-C to HDMI adapter and have it hooked to my Dell U3415W. You can still use the Surface power supply so no power issues at all. No lag, performs great, even while gaming.

Here's the adapter I'm using: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V68NVR/ref=ohauidetailpageo05s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
