Has anyone ever tried to use up all of their stash? [R]

1 year, 1 month agoGingerStitches posted submission on knitting.

This is a somehwat serious question so please, no joking answers such as "nooo why would you do that 😂😂😂" etc., etc.

I'm just wondering if this is something that anyone's set as a goal for themselves. Of course I'm pretty sure we all have the urge to hoard yarn, but as someone who doesn't have much disposable income and also sells his finished items, for me there is a very immediate practical aspect to stash busting.

I actually don’t like to have a stash for knitting since I like to buy yarn for specific projects (with a few exceptions). I have been gifted some yarn and have some left over for projects but once my Christmas knitting is done, the stash will mostly be gone! It currently all fits into two drawers of these plastic carts right now with all my needles as well.

As an incoming freshman what should i bring and not bring to dorm at UCI? [R]

Hey guys i'm an incoming freshman and i have no idea what to buy and take with me when i dorm. Can you guys please give me like a list or just things you'll know i need like supplies and etc. Thanks

A shower caddy helped alot. Didn't think I'd ever use mine but i ended up using it every day.

Besides basic school supplies, bring your vitamins as they'll help keeping you awake.

Plastic Drawers such as these where you can shove it into your closet to get yourself a few more feet of surface area helped in organization.

3M stick-on-hooks or whatever they're called to hang your stuff and keep them off the ground.

Tupperware or any container to keep your toothbrush and toothpaste neatly together.

I can't remember everything I brought over but basically anything that will keep your stuff together neatly and in a small package. Cups to hold your pens and pencils, tupperware to hold your stuff, ziplock bags. You don't want to be that roommate who drops everything on the floor as soon as they get back from class and have everything messy.

EDIT: The one thing I absolutely loved myself for bringing was a pair of ear plugs and an eye mask yo help me sleep during the day and help me sleep when it's late at night and my roommate continued to study at night. Those two things saved my life.

Is it easier to be a minimalist when you have more financial security? [R]

2 years, 11 months agoxthecharacter posted submission on minimalism.

I've seen the argument that it's easier to throw away or pare down your things when you're more secure in the sense that you can purchase more, should you discard the wrong item. I'm not sure if I buy this argument, a variant of which is also used against the Marie Kondo Method. To me, minimalism is about starting from the premise of keeping what you need. I don't start from the premise of getting rid of things, but I find that to be a natural result. Are most people here financially secure? Is minimalism really coming from a place of "privilege?"

2 years, 11 months agoxthecharacter posted on minimalism.

I am a big KonMari fan and have read one of her books. I definitely think the purpose of her method is not to minimize the amount of money spent over time; although, I do think her method intends to minimize monetary waste. To her, throwing something away and re-buying it once you realize it really does inspire joy (through being necessary or otherwise) is not a waste of money, because you essentially paid for the learning experience about that particular item. Since the KonMari method is not about absolute minimization of cost, the expense is deemed "worth it" because it aids in achieving tidiness. Anyway, that is how I see it.

More generally, though, the sentiment of the quote goes beyond just financial security when the illogical aspect is pushed further intsead. For example, saving packaging for electronics you purchased, cardboard boxes, styrofoam pellets, etc. can incur greater cost just to store them than the cost of buying new ones (or not having any at all). She talks a lot about not stocking up on items in advance, like not buying bulk products because it's cheaper. It's tough to evaluate it exactly but in general i tend to agree with her that this is the frugal choice. You may move and not be able to take all those tubes of toothpaste with you. Or, your boxes may wear down and no longer be usable. (You can often get cardboard boxes for free.) Or, they may need to be taped up because they have ripped, and you may have to spend the opportunity cost of repairing cardboard boxes, because you feel the sunk cost of throwing them away after having stored them for so long. Simple methods save time, which saves money. Having less things saves space, which saves both time and money.

She also suggests purchasing some extremely frugal items for uses in creative ways. For example she suggests using something like this. That's a $20 item that functions in the exact same way as an item people often spend $200+ (or even much more) on. It also has other benefits, including being lightweight, stackable, transparent, and with removable casters. Functional, minimal, and frugal.

Are wigs ok? I love my new wig, but I don't know how to style it. [R]

I have a set of plastic drawers like these that I also store fabric and crafting supplies in. (I'm a cosplayer, which is why I have so much stuff I need to store.) I keep the wigs in the bags they come in, and some of the wigs came with a cardboard slipcase that helps to keep them from squishing each other too much. It might help to braid the longer wigs in order to keep the fibers from getting tangled. You'll want to occasionally re-braid them though so they don't get too kinked.

I'm kind of a beginner with styling wigs. Arda Wigs has a few really helpful basic (and some not-so-basic) videos. I can say when you go to style something, using a wig head vs putting the wig on your head is partly personal preference and partly dependent on the style you're going for. Last spring I spiked one wig and did a side-braid on another. For the spiked wig, I liked using a foam wig head because it was easier to see what I was doing. The second wig was so long and unwieldy that it was actually easier to put it on and braid it like it was my own hair.

[LPT Request] How to make a small bedroom feel larger [R]

May 26, 2015

Hello, I've been living in my smallest room to date, and it just feels cluttered. What are some ways I can make it feel not so cramped?

Edit: I guess this could also pertain to something along the lines of taking advantage of every inch of space in my bedroom. Having all of my things accessible, making my room feel personable, yet also very open. I would like to find the balance between "white walls" and a place I can call home

Edit 2: What about some items besides a mirror? Or some funky storage tips? I try and take advantage of my space up and down as well, along the "y-axis." My bookshelf for video games/movies is very tall, and at a height of 6' 1" height storage isn't an issue. I also want to say that I took my sliding closet doors off, and that helped me feel better, too. Consider my desk is next to my closet, removing that door helps me feel more open when sitting there.

Edit 3: I'd like to thank the academy for this successful post as well as all of the tips!! :D

I have a very small room and I've done a few things to make it appear larger. The furniture is one of the most important parts because if you have large furniture, obviously your room is going to look smaller. I threw away or moved my large furniture and replaced it with smaller ones. I replaced my huge dresser with one of those small cart drawers (similar to this http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-Wide-29308001-3-Drawer-White/dp/B000MPQ2S2/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1432677236&sr=8-1&keywords=drawers). I have another smaller one where I keep junk in and I have two small tables. For my bed, I sleep on a mattress topper on the floor. It sounds crazy, but ever since I started doing that, my back pain has improved.

CONGRATS ON SIGNING FOR A HOME! :)

I think storage is extremely important. If you don't have a place for everything right away, you'll eventually just start forming piles of chaos...or maybe that's just me.

If I had $50 to spend on Amazon for home items, I'd get:

If my math is right, that's just under $50!

CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY The raffler chose RainbowSpectrum, littlemisstigger, and OfMonstersAndSuicide. Congratulations. I hope to do this again next month!

Pretty much like the title says, a lot of what RAOA is about is getting stuff that we want. The pretties of life. But often there is something that we really need. Something mundane, that we need, but for some reason it keeps falling on the backburner because we can really do without it, but yet we really need it. Like a new burner element for your stove. Or new windshield washer blades for your car. A knee brace so you aren't in pain. A new battery for your laptop. A good pair of toenail clippers. That bottle of stain remover. You can do without those things, but yet you could really use them. Know what I mean?

Details.

Contest closes 8pm EST Sunday May 18.

Link to me an item that you need and tell me why you need it. I'll be generous and say the limit is $50. If your item is less than $50, I'll gift more people until the $50 is used up.

Include the raffle phrase "Needy bo beedy" so I can do this randomly.

Edit: Wow. I want to gift all of you. But minimum wage <$$....... I hope to make this a monthly thing because some of you are asking for the most basic of necessities. Also some have messaged me saying that if they are chosen to give up their item in return for someone else. I am just touched by this kindness. Wow. 12 more hours to go. What do you need?!

Have fun!

[Contest] Find me a cheap storage solution! [R]

CLOSED Okay, so. It is my goal to own every N64 game released in North America. That is a bit under 300 games. 260 something, I believe. I have 23. That being said, I am running out of room in this little box to hold all my games. Since I can get most of these N64 games for under $5-$10, I think my collection will be growing fast. What I need is a cheap storage solution to hold all of my N64 stuff. Link to me something useful on amazon, and the winner will get something $10-$15 (I don't have prime.) I will choose a winner on Monday! Things to keep in mind:

  • There are close to 300 N64 games
  • I own two N64 systems
  • I own four controllers and a couple accessories

Well, I used to have a blue one of these, and it held up really well, so I have to recommend it. You can get them cheaper at places like Target, though.

This sort of container is the same concept, more stackable, but less convenient. It's also cheaper in some stores.

If you want to go more fancy, this is a spiffy stackable container. The top is a lid that comes off. My parents have one, and it's pretty nice.

Thanks for the contest!

I like these things, and you can usually get them in lots of sizes You could always grab a few, too. :) i

Edit: Saw that you linked them already I'll look around some more.

You could probably try something like a book shelf. I'm not sure how else you could store them without stacking besides that or a wall rack.

Question about tool boxes [R]

I do mobile detailing so I go to people's houses to detail their cars. I have so much stuff now that a shitty little plastic tote is no longer cutting it. It's also way too disorganized for me so I need something that will keep things in order (ie, microfibers here, spray bottles here, soap there, electrical tools over here, etc etc)

I was wondering if anybody here used either of these mobile tool boxes and, if not, what your opinion on them is or if you have a suggestion.

http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-020800R-FatMax-Mobile-Station/dp/B000V29B7K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383608493&sr=8-1&keywords=mobile+tool+cart

The only problem is that I have a Mercury Sable...not something that was really made for mobile tool boxes haha.

Used Ford Ranger or Toyota Tacoma. Small truck would work great I would think. I'm just a weekend warrior detailer but I use storage carts to move around my SUV and to hold everything I need for what I'm doing and set my DA down on. Something like this might fit in the back seats = http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-29308001-3-Drawer-See-Through-Drawers/dp/B000MPQ2S2/ref=sr12?ie=UTF8&qid=1383614575&sr=8-2&keywords=storage+cart

Edit: Buying it at a store might be cheaper and easier.

Fellow book addict here! I got something like this but without wheel and filled it with books and put it in my closet. I also use stacks of books as bookends, put them in my desk drawers, put them on the top shelf of my closet, and for awhile I used a stack of books as a little nightstand (my bed is on the floor, no frame). As for the books you want to giveaway, sell, or swap, I recommend checking out /r/bookswap, or /r/bookies where I run the weekly bookswap (in which you can also sell and give away). Good luck! :)

Under the cage I have an emergency cage, a box full of wood chews, their scale, and my box full of unsafe examples for new owners.

I put the hay in Rubbermaid totes that fit on the shelf underneath the cage. As for fleece fabric? You know I have a ton for the stuff I make, that's usually in an extra drawer in the dresser or an organized box in the closet lol.
