I wouldn't even bother with vanilla Civ 5. The DLC/expansions made so many improvements to the base gameplay it was a night and day difference! Thankfully, Civ 5 Complete can be had for really cheap and is worth getting even just to have a "complete Civ franchise collection".

So my friend have bought CIV 5 on a recent sale from steam. He have now figured out that without the 2 expansion packs the game is not as much fun.
I was wandering, if we get him a steam CD key with the complete edition - Will steam allow him to activate it? I mean - He already has the base game, so we are unsure how steam will handle the "Base game + ALL DLC" CD Key

Yeah it's on sale right now on Amazon: Sid Meier's Civilization V: The Complete Edition - PC https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HWMP0TU/ref=cmswrcpapi_l-vtybNYYHQ2A
When you buy it they send you box with cd and code. You use the code to activate the game on Steam. So I assume once you get game you can send him the key code to activate on Steam.
Question: what is the best 4x Game for a beginner? [R]2 years, 8 months agoSometimes_Lies posted submission on 4Xgaming.

I have recently taken an interest in 4x games but I don't know what to buy. Any suggestions that are easy enough for a beginner to understand?

I agree. Civ V is also incredibly newbie-friendly, to the point where it gets a lot of flak for being "dumbed down." It removed a lot of the fiddly, micromanage-y things and instead tries to let the player focus on big-picture stuff.
The game is also perpetually on sale. Despite being a big-budget AAA title, it's one of the cheapest 4x games you can buy. It's always on sale somewhere. Just go to isthereanydeal.com and search for Civ V Complete, and you're almost certain to find a legit site selling it for 75% off (about $12.50). As I write this post, there are three different places discounting it.
Amazon also has the physical disc on sale quite often, though it'd be annoying to have to wait for shipping when all you're really buying is a Steam code.
Really, I'd start with Civ V and go out from there. It's cheap, it'll teach you the basics, and it's probably the most successful/mainstream 4x game ever made. Even if Civ VI were out now (as opposed to coming out next week), I'd still recommend V to OP, because it's such a solid choice.

I just downloaded the demo and realized that this is most definitely going to be the next game that I get invested in. With Civ VI coming out soon I'd anticipate V getting a drop in price. My question is, what dlc should I get? What is a good price point to commit to this game? I'd like to get it before winter so I have something to occupy my free time when it gets cold. Is there any place other than steam where I can get a better price?
Purchasing Civ 5 for the first time. Steam offers many different packages. What do I purchase? [R]2 years, 10 months agoTheRealBobUnited posted submission on civ.

Hello all. I want to purchase Civilization to pass some time. I don't know how into it I will be. What I've read from some people is that they didn't care for vanilla Civ 5 at first. If I'm purchasing Civ 5 do I want to bundle it with all of the different map packs? The difference in cost is $30 for Civ 5 and $50 with all map packs.
I assume I do not need to or consider to purchase the expansions at this time, as I need to even play regular Civ 5. Is that correct?

Just get it from here: https://www.amazon.com/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-V-Complete-PC/dp/B00HWMP0TU/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1471126664&sr=8-1&keywords=civ+v It only costs 16$ and comes with all of the expansions.
How Necessary is DLC? [R]2 years, 10 months agodarthgato posted submission on civ5.

So I'm just getting started with pc gaming, and civ 5 will be my first game that I'll be buying. Unfortunately I'm a bit short on money, like $20 short... so...
How necessary is the dlc in the end? I don't plan on playing multiplayer, and my only previous experience with civ is Civilization: Revolution on the xbox(if that even matters). I don't really want to wait any longer to get the game, but that extra bit really isn't in my budget........

I found the complete edition on Amazon for less than 20 (there are other more expensive copies on Amazon as well). Looks like it's going through a third party but it's "Fulfilled by Amazon" whatever that means. Maybe research the 3rd party people? Looks like they're actually selling a disk-based copy.
I'm gonna buy Civilization 5, never played before, is the 20 extra dollars for the complete edition worth it or not? [R]3 years, 4 months agoBigPersia posted submission on civ5.

Never played before. Want to download the game. My friend said no, if I don't like it it'll just be a waste. On the other hand, if I do like it and I do want to get those expansions later, I'll have to spend a lot more with all things considered.
Jan. 18, 2016
To clarify: The game changes significantly throughout the extra expansions, with new concepts being brought in that add extra richness to the game. The extra maps and races are also quite cool. One final point, once you have been playing for a bit (assuming you like it), you will want to try some of the different mods that people have made for the game - and many of these mods require one/both of the expansions for compatibility.
edit:spelling edit 2: Found the whole complete edition for $20 on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-V-Complete-PC/dp/B00HWMP0TU/ref=sr12?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1453140614&sr=1-2&keywords=civ+5
[Civ V] Played this at a friend's house for the first time, have a few ?s [R]4 years agoOntolodox posted submission on civ.

In the interest of full disclosure, I've never played any Civ, nor have I really touched any strategy game out there, real-time or turn-based (unless you count Risk or Settlers of Catan, which I suppose would be considered Baby's First Civ). I played Queen Isabella, didn't do much outside of building farms and such inside my borders, made a trade caravan, got in a small scuffle with Wu Zetian (I was also playing on Settler difficulty because obvious), random stuff. While I was doing things, I felt like I wasn't doing anything. But my curiosity was piqued.
I'm curious what kind of tutorials are out there, what the best ones are and what kind of learning curve I should expect so I'm not too overwhelmed. I'd like to give it a shot, but it's currently $50 on Steam for the Complete Edition (my friend was adamant that I not bother with Vanilla), and I'd hate to plunk that down only to just get frustrated and not touch it, being a genre outside my normal expertise.
What's the best way to go learning, and should I wait for it to go on sale? Any help/discussion is appreciated.
