[Recommendations] Looking for a Father's Day Gift! [R]

2 months, 1 week agoGrand_Seiko_5 posted submission on Watches.
June 14, 2019

I decided that I want to get my dad a watch for Father’s Day. I figured it’d be a good gift for him because he hasn’t owned one in probably 10 years, and the last time we went out together he bought me a watch and mentioned how he wants to get one for himself soon.

I have a few watches in mind, but I can’t look through everything so some suggestions would be appreciated! His style is pretty traditional and he likes simple things, and he’d be wearing the watch mostly to work. I’m a college student so my budget isn’t big, looking for something between $250-$300 but I’d be willing to spend more for the right piece.

Thanks!

The Oris Rectangular is an interesting piece. Oris has a great reputation and a long history of making quality watches. The watch is bigger than the others you mentioned and has a silver instead of white face, but could work for you.

Another off-the-beaten path option is the Zeno Docteur Winder. It oozes personality and fits the size and colors that you're looking for, though it isn't on a bracelet. I would absolutely buy this if I were brave enough to wear it.

Those are all the rectangular ones that I really know about. If that isn't a must, a Seiko SARB035 fits your description to a T. The SARB is a favorite around here and has an excellent movement, size, and finish. Just do a quick search on this subreddit and you will find dozens of posts gushing about their SARB's. You would want to move quick on this one if you wanted it - they were recently discontinued and are becoming more scarce.

I've been waivering back and forth between 033 and 035 (Black or White). The only thing that keeps me from picking the 035 is that it looks cream colored, and the date window looks white. Do you not notice this in person? In the product pic on Amazon it's really noticeable. Let me know!

I love the leather band on it, usually I prefer bracelets, but this is awesome.

Hello all!

After a lot of scouting on this subreddit I'm ready to pull the trigger on my first serious watch. The watch I've been looking at is the Seiko 035, it looks stunning in these posts (1, 2, 3).

A few questions though:

  1. I'm in Sweden and will be for the foreseeable future and no relative will be flying overseas until the summer. This means I'll have to import the watch and a top of the $334 it's $103 in shipping and import. Would the community consider the watch for an additional 100 over the current price?

  2. I'm a student so I'm only comfortable buying one watch. I study at a military academy as a civilian, but have a naval background and if the opportunity arises I wouldn't say no to working in that field either as a civilian or military personnel. Chances are that I'll most likely continue studying and working as a civilian, but I don't want to rule anything out. I'm also an avid skier (cross-country, slalom) and tend to go hiking for a week every year during the summer. The Seiko 035 is gorgeous and as long as I'm in the academy studying I'm sure it'll be great, but what about the aforementioned activities? Should I look at another watch?

  3. I want a few different bands, a light perlon/nylon band for more casual wear, a brown leather band for a bit more formal and a black leather band for formal. Is this something I can easily swap on my own? What tools would I need and what bands would you recommend?

Thanks for any help!

[Vincero Kairos] Watches that have this look? [R]

After reading a bit on this subreddit, I've realized that vincero watches are poor quality and not worth the money. However, I really looove the look of their Kairos series. In particular, this: https://vincerocollective.com/collections/kairos-collection/products/the-kairos-white-silver

Are there any watches that you would recommend that have exactly the same or similar, robust but clean look?

how much are you willing to spend?

this is a fairly common style of watch.

there are a few Seiko 5's that fit the bill (dial wise)

SASRB035

SXNS73 is similar

though, this is the first one that popped into my head but its $1800. but its the most accurate...or should I say, this is the watch Vincero was trying to mimic IMO.

What I want:

  • A decent brand
  • Very simple white face. not offwhite
  • silver tick marks for each hour only
  • black leather strap
  • thin silver hands
  • price range depends on how much I like it. Preferably in the 100-300 range, but able to pay $1000 if I really love it.

The closest thing I could find to what I'm looking for is this: https://www.danielwellington.com/media/staticbucket/media/catalog/product/cache/thumbnail/1200x/dc4095f997835e64a6e07c1125933e12/c/l/cl40-sheffield-s_1.png But automatic movement would be a nice plus, and I don't really like the DW brand or what the logo looks like on there. Also a bit more designing on the leather would look nice. Thanks so much in advance.

edit: I found one that matches what I'm looking for in every single way except brand and probably general quality. If someone can give me a suggestion that looks literally exactly like this but is a good brand, I would be so happy

I've decided to purchase the Seiko SARB035. A few questions:

  1. I see it's available on Ebay for $309, compared to $340 on Amazon. Amazon provides a 2 year warranty; the Ebay seller said that they provide a 1 year non-manufacturer's warranty. Long Island Watch has it for $379, also with a 2 year warranty. Is the difference of 1 year the reason that the Ebay one is cheaper, or there some slight difference in the model I'm not seeing?

  2. Will this go cheaper than $340/$309, or it's just worth buying it now? Based on my research these prices are fine.

  3. With a quality black leather band, can this watch be worn for basically any formal situation? My research says yes, but looking for confirmation.

Thanks.

If you like that type of style, then I'd recommend the Orient Bambino. I've heard a lot of good things about it, and it's very popular among watch lovers. Honestly I'd steer clear of brands you've never heard of like Burei. Generally when you want a cheap watch under 3-400, you're best going with Seiko, Citizen, and Orient as they're tried and tested brands with a good reputation. Another great option at $300 is the Seiko SARB035 or SARB033 (white or black dial respectively). The SARB line is very well respected at that price range, you'd have a hard time doing better than that IMO.

Edit: Google SARB035 on leather to see how nice it looks.

Hi everyone!

I'm not a watch person, to be honest. I don't get it, but you guys get it, and that's why I'm here!
I searched the great material you guys put together but I didn't see many mechanical watch options in my price range in the suggested watch comments,

My boyfriend's birthday is next week and the man loves watches. He has one from his dad that he wears routinely because it's a nice watch (unsure of the brand, sorry!) and it's mechanical. So that's what I know: he likes mechanical watches. (I also know he needs a new one but is on a budget.)

His current watch has one of those, err...silver bands that is not a leather type material and it has a black face. Other than that, I just know it's mechanical.

He's a good man and a hard worker so I want to do something nice. I want him to feel good about this watch I want to buy him. His style is pretty modern, he's mid-20's. Dresses up in a suit for work daily.

What are my options for a good mechanical watch under, let's say, $500? (Less expensive is obviously a little nicer for me, but.)

Thanks SO much for the help.

Hi, /r/Watches!

I need help with finding a watch that is:

  • light, to be worn all-day, every-day
  • durable, preferably water resistant (should be able to withstand a bit of rain)
  • lumed
  • able to be dressed up AND down (strap change is ok)
  • <$450
  • Either automatic or something like Eco-Drive (I don't really want to deal with batteries)

Any advice about a type of watch or a specific watch is greatly appreciated!

I'm a 19-year-old college student who doesn't really like to look too casual (think polos, OCBDs, khakis, chinos, etc.). Thanks in advance!

edit2: Thanks for the recommendations, guys. With all these requirements I forgot the one thing that matters most: whether or not I actually like the watch. When I was roaming around I came across an asian Citizen Nighthawk and fell in love with it (might have to do with the fact that I'm an aerospace engineering major), so that's the one I went with :D here's a wrist shot :)
