Since others are listing places to shop, here are some things to shop for:

  • Expansion pak is required for some games.
  • 4 controllers. Joystick tightness is a thing; look at selling condition.
  • 4 more controllers, if buying Mario Party (wear on joystick).
  • At least 1 memory card. Internal memory wasn't a big thing until 7th gen (PS3/Xbox 360).
  • If you buy a rumble pak, then rechargeable batteries.

Some game ideas (in no order):

  • Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (SP)
  • Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (SP)
  • 007 Goldeneye (MP)
  • Mario Kart 64 (MP)
  • Mario 64 (SP)
  • Paper Mario RPG (SP)
  • Donkey Kong 64 (SP) - requires expansion pak
  • Pokemon Stadium (MP) & controller GBC pak
  • Mario Tennis (MP)
  • Mario Party 1, 2, or 3 (MP)
  • Wave Race (MP)

Edit: some more games:

  • Super Smash Brothers (MP)
  • I liked Kirby 64: Crystal Shards (SP) - YMMV

I can't wait to hear what the Console Peasant Apologists have to say about the updated PS4. [R]

Console players need to realize that beautiful PC graphics and performance along with a priority of development on PC as a gaming platform may force the market to produce more powerful consoles, a win-win for everyone. [R]

If we can make another x360/ps3 vs pc situation (back when the consoles first released), that'd actually be great, it'd definitely make a console's lifespan much longer.

Force competition, not manipulation. Same goes for AMD vs Nvidia

Why don't they just make consoles easily upgradable? Something like this thing back in the day. http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Expansion-Pak/dp/B00000INR2 Twice the memory, twice the resolution!

Sorry probably covered somewhere before.. pretty new to this sf, but really why not? Just make the console equipped with a good cpu and then give them the option to purchase an upgrade to play at 1080p :)

Missing a piece of nintendo 64 [R]

Hi guys, my roommate found his old nintendo 64 and we've been trying to set it up however while it'll turn on there's no signal on the tv. There's a piece that is missing from the system, but we didn't think it was necessary.

Here's the nintendo 64 after we turned it on http://imgur.com/72vwLOl

But as you can see we're missing a piece of it. Can anyone identify the piece that we're missing and is it essential for function?

It is this: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-64-Expansion-Pak/dp/B00000INR2

It is mostly optional (and wasn't even available during launch). What it does is add more memory. It's worth having one, and some games even require it.

Here are the games that can use it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo64accessories#Expansion_Pak

Note: Mario Party doesn't need or even use it. The console is broken for another reason...

At worst, if you're not trolling, that's where the memory for the N64 goes. Here's a link to where you can order the expansion, which allows you to play every game made for it.

Hey all,

I recently picked up a Nintendo 64 with three controllers, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, and Pokemon Stadium. I also got some memory cards and a rumble pack. Got all for $70. But, I have a few questions.

  • Should I take apart and clean the N64 and controllers? Is this a difficult or tedious process?

  • Right now I'm using the composite AV cable for video and sound, I read online that people are using S-Video cables instead. I only use my n64 with a projector (which has an S Video input) Would using an S-Video cable benefit me?

  • How do I take care of my cartridges?

  • One rumble pack doesn't work, what should I do?

  • The slot in front of the cartridge bay on the N64; is that the RAM? Inside is the stock one and the sticker has never been removed, but my buddy tells me that he has a red, ported one. Is this something worth upgrading?

Items that came with my purchase that I have no idea what they do:

  • What is a "Memory Card"?

  • What is a "Controller Pak"?

Any other general advice is more than welcome. Thanks to everyone in advance, I'm excited to keep my 64 in pristine condition, learn a bunch, and play some games!!

Gotcha, I meant the expansion pack. I guess I'll just have to get a used one, because I'm not paying $110 for a new one.

The press has described Wu's game as "Heavy Rain meets Mass Effect." [R]

Or so she claims in the Greenlight section for her game.

Revolution 60 is the debut game from Giant Spacekat and game developer Brianna Wu. The press has described it as, "Heavy Rain meets Mass Effect,"

However, it's from one of her own press releases.

“ Revolution 60 is a complex cinematic experience, where story and choice are paramount, as players make moral choices that decide the fate of heroine Holiday. Influenced heavily by classic TV shows such as 24, as it does to anime and game changing interactive entertainment classics Heavy Rain and Mass Effect, Revolution 60 tell a short intense story built around touch controls ”, said Brianna Wu, Head of Development at Giant Spacekat

Actually, that's the memory card for the controller. You want something like this, just hopefully not for that price. That actually doubled the system's RAM and allowed it to play more games and gave certain graphical and AI-related upgrades.

Hey /r/N64, Could someone identify this cartridge I found in the memory panel? It has no serial numbers or and writing at all on it. Thanks for any help! [R]
