Comparatively she is a very new character having premiered in 2012. So you can start right from the beginning.

If I wanted to start reading Marvel comics, where should I start? [R]

I’ve been wanting to really dive into the world of Marvel Comics, but I just don’t know where to begin. There’s so many great stories I’m sure about the heroes I currently know and love and some about the ones I’m about to meet in the MCU. Any suggestions?

Introduction to Comics

How to Get Into Comic Books (13:40) | Patrick Willems

Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite shows, movies, books, etc. Do you seek quality storytelling or encyclopedic superhero knowledge? Plan to collect? Do you have the time/money to read 50 or 500 comics per character?

Don’t try to read everything at once. There’s too much. Forget about catching up, continuity, universes, etc. for now. Think of it like s olving a jigsaw puzzle one small piece at a time until you finally start to see the big picture. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so they aren’t always ideal starting points. Creative teams change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told.

Pick an interesting character/team and seek their most popular/acclaimed stories. Focus on self-contained/complete stories. You will encounter unexplained references/characters/events—just keep reading or Wiki. Don’t let the tangled interconnectedness of shared-universe comics overwhelm you.

Discover your preferences and let them guide you. Avoid over-analyzing—just start reading. Do you prefer old/new comics? Specific writers/genres? Cartoony/realistic art? Character/plot -driven story? Explicit content? Follow these instincts. Didn’t get a reference? Make that your next read.

Where to Start? [R]

July 29, 2019

I've only started reading Comics and Graphic Novels by reading volume 1 in the "Sandman" series and the

"Apocalypse Suite" and "Dallas" series in The Umbrella Academy. I want more an am going to continue with Sandman but what's putting me off reading the big companies (Marvel and DC) is that they've been around so long they have so many series and so many issues.

Two things:

  1. Where would I start with Marvel and DC
  2. Are there any good comic series and/or companies I should start reading? (I'm liking the Dark Horse comics so far.)

Hello comic book fans, I am a little bit new in this whole comic book stuff, so I wanted to ask some people that surely could help me, I hope. My question is: I want to start reading DC & Marvel comics, but I don't know with which comic I should start reading and then continue. I just don't know the order. It would be really helpful if somebody could give me a right order to read comics.

I apologize if my "question" isn't really understandable. English isn't my native language.

Introduction to Comics

How to Get Into Comic Books (13:40) | Patrick Willems

Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite shows, movies, books, etc. Reading primarily for enjoyment or encyclopedic knowledge? Collecting? Have the time/resources to read 50 or 500 comics per character?

Don’t try to read everything at once. There’s too much. Forget about catching up, continuity, universes, etc. for now. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so they aren’t necessarily ideal starting points. Writers change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told. Remember, there are many great characters, creators, publishers, etc. to explore.

Pick an interesting character/team and seek their most popular/acclaimed stories. Focus on self-contained, complete stories in one corner of the universe. There will be unexplained references/characters, just persevere or Wiki. Don’t let the tangled web of shared-universe comics overwhelm you. Think of it like solving a jigsaw puzzle one small piece at a time until you finally see the big picture.

Discover your preferences and let them guide you. Don’t get stuck preparing/over-analyzing, just start reading. Do you like/dislike old/new comics? Specific writers/genres? Cartoony/realistic art? Familiar/weird concepts? References/self-contained? All-ages/mature content? Follow these instincts. Didn’t understand a reference? Maybe read that next.

I want to get into reading comics, whether DC or Marvel. I know only as much as the movies for each universe, and am unsure where to start.

I'd prefer physical copies vs digital, and am hoping you folks can guide me to at least a starting point.

Could you guys point me to good starting points in both DC and Marvel?

I'm so sick of seeing all these TV shows, movies, news, etc. that portray 1/7th of the world's population as extremist nutjobs. Can someone point me in the direction of a book where the hero or protagonist is Muslim, and the religion is portrayed in a more positive (or at the very least objectively unbiased) light?

Summon someone you wish you could meet in real life but haven't met yet.

  • Tell them why you want to meet them and what you would like to do when you get together keep if friendly and SFW please

  • You may summon multiple people if you want but can only describe one activity/adventure that you would attend in your reply.

  • You can enter as many times as you want as long as you summon new people each time and describe a different activity.

Read through what other people are doing and invite yourself along to one adventure. Let the poster know why you would be a good fit for their outing!

Zita the Spacegirl

It's an excellentgraphic novel, it'll capture her artistically or authorially (pretty sure that's not a word, don't tell your daughter), maybe even both.

Also the Ms. Marvel run, female protagonist and female author, excellent writing.

Cheers!

[Contest Closed] Recommend a new (in print) comic for me to read! I have a pretty extensive collection so far so I'm definitely looking for things that may have snuck by my radar, off the beaten path, or I just haven't thought to pick up yet.

Some series I enjoy quite a lot:

  • Runaways
  • Giant Days
  • Sunstone
  • Death Vigil
  • Saga
  • Sex Criminals
  • Locke & Key
  • Paper Girls
  • OGLAF

Feel free to suggest as many as you like, because there's a chance I may have already read it. Please, no DC suggestions (I already have the small number of DC Universe I care to read).

I'll be making a decision late Friday night Friday ❤

Looking at your post history it seems like you don't read comic books so it makes sense you haven't heard of her. To the general public she is very obscure having only appeared in one cartoon and some mobile games. But expect that to change in the upcoming "phases" of the MCU, she's a very likely addition down the road.

She's actually been very popular since she debuted in 2014. Her book has been very strong, and Kamala herself is very likeable. Her book will consistently be among the most pulled on weeks where it's out here, and she's been pushed as the lead for two different team books. She's the most popular new character to debut in a long time.

You can find out more on why people actually want her merch here.

Well, looks like I'll have another character for the Doctor Strange event. Here's hoping Ghost Rider and the other Halloween characters are on the board! [R]

Comic for young reader [R]

Hello, I am looking at getting a graphic novel for my daughter for v-day. She is only 10 but a very advanced reader. She has read all harry Potters, Percy Jackson, Steelheart (Brian Sanderson), and the maze runner novels so she has a good grasp on reading. I have tried to get her into comics before, but nothing has really grabbed her yet. She read a graphic novel on the bible she did enjoy it, but that was several years ago. Have had no luck sense. I have stuck with Marvel mostly as that was my bread and butter growing up, but I'm open to anything. Being a young girl i would prefer a female lead, but not required. The only thing i do ask is no sexual innuendos of any kind. I tried batgirl as i thought she would enjoy her story yet the very first one i picked up she was explaining that she did not like men (which is cool, but not for a 10 year old). Thanks for the recommendations guys.

For Ms. Marvel, go with the first trade "No Normal" (which collects issues 1-5) or the hardcover Vol. 1 which collects issues 1-11.

I think Gotham Academy just has the first trade out. I haven't personally read that one, but I've heard it's great & feels kinda like Harry Potter, so it might be right up her alley!

Dec. 8, 2015

So my wife expressed an interest in Kamela Khan as a character. My wife never cared much for super heroes, so I jumped at the opportunity. Grabbed Ms Marvel #1 from my local comic shop and gave it to her last night as a minimal commitment thing. If she's curious for more, we can get more. If it's not her thing, no biggie.

Except now I'm realizing that this is not the start of Kamela Khan as Ms Marvel. This is the 2015 Ms Marvel #1. Whoops! There goes my nerd cred.

She hasn't read it yet, and it's probably not a big deal, but I'm wondering what it actually means. Is it the first of this "run" or "season" or something? Is it a good starting point? Should I go get the collection of her first run? I don't see a need to gather the couple of times she showed up before her main series, but maybe I'm wrong.

I see this turning into the massive commitment I was trying to avoid very quickly, and I'm afraid of scaring my wife off of superheroes before I've even started. Any help?

It would be the start of a new run and a jumping in point. But the main reason it has #1 printed on it is because #1's sell more than #24 or whatever.

The best way to jump on board would be to buy this and see if she likes it

And see if she likes it. It has the complete story of her origin.

Any help?

I'm going to list the first trades of series that should be good options. But I would also think you might want to look at Marvel Unlimited it's an app that lets you read most the Marvel comics universe it runs 6 months behind current issues, it's around $9.99.

For example check out M.F.K. by Nilah Magruder

amazing documentary on black superheroes, Check it out!

a good round table interview about diversity

For this thread well kinda stay away from the big two. because they really aren't in the business of making new heroes that aren't legacy(nothings wrong with legacy tho) anymore. And we'll stay away from what most people listed already.

but for the big two off the top of my head check out Ms.Marvel, or Mighty avengers.

To be honest you're gonna wanna go a indie route. There are so many writers of color killing it and winning awards. They doing big things. They the next generation.

Have you ever heard of Dwayne McDuffie? Ever heard of static? Ever heard of milestone comics? Seriously you're going to want to. They are seriously amazing. They stand the test of time! Arts good too. Great characters. Trust me. Milestone comics is the way to go.

And the Great thing is Its coming Back!!

so check out some classics to get into it!

Hardware, Icon and Rocket,Static! etc

In regards to black Panther. He has been written well. Check out volume 3 and volume 4 by priest and Hudlin, respectively. Best Panther ever. V3. Is getting fully released because of the movie. This Is the right time. So cop that as well.

But yeah back to indie stuff let's check out the books, great writers, and which ones won awards.

The Glyph awards

The Glyph Comics Awards recognize the best in comics made by, for, and about people of color from the preceding calendar year. While it is not exclusive to black creators, it does strive to honor those who have made the greatest contributions to the comics medium in terms of both critical and commercial impact. By doing so, the goal is to encourage more diverse and high quality work across the board and to inspire new creators to add their voices to the field.

How do I start reading.. and who? [R]

Right so, I'm a total noob to comics.. i've come from the movies and.. I have been researching and have sooooome ideas on where I want to start.. but due to my regional location.. what I want to read.. is not necessarily what I will have available.. (this is how much it cost to bring in 12 comics http://imgur.com/WpdXHjy ) (needless to say I did not buy this lol).

anyway, what I want to start out with I think is the female heroes as I enjoy female leads in practically everything. I'm looking at the new Spider Women series and the Ms Marvel/Captain Marvel series (im confused on who is who here) but I'm also wanting to see if theres any Black Widow stuff as well (I like her in the movies xD )

Anyway, any suggestions guys? Thanks.

You might also want to check out Matt Fraction's Hawkeye. It focus on Clint Barton with Kate Bishop as a supporting role but the 3rd volume is just about Kate. There will be 4 tpb volumes or a soon to be released omnibus.

If you are wanting to read or currently reading Spider-verse, the first four issues for spider-woman will be ok but if your like me and did not yet read all of Spider-verse. Issues #1-#4 won't make a lot of sense. But #5 should be a new jumping on point and Silk #1 and Spider-Gwen #1 will be after the end of Spider-verse.

I've also been enjoying the new Thor and Angela Asgards Assassin, I would suggest looking at the previews to see if you might like either of those. Both kinda tie into the event Original Sin.

Captain Marvel 1st volume of 2014 run is a 2nd volume coming and issues are currently on-going.

I'm looking for a comic book/graphic novel for my niece [R]

Hey y'all so I know comic books and girls can get a little tough sometime. I'm looking for something to get my 12 year old niece that fits somewhere around the superhero genre that isn't overtly sexual/graphic/political. She would definitely be more interested in something with a female lead and leans towards the comedic side of heroics.

EDIT: I know she at least has an interest in Supergirl. Is there anything like that for her age?

Ms Marvel by G Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona is EXACTLY what you're looking for. Trade paperback volume 1 is out now. I think the title is "No Normal". It's seriously the best thing Marvel has created in years. I just bought a copy for my 12-year-old sister.

I just finished the first Ms. Marvel trade, and it was great. It's not too violent or anything so far, so seems appropriate for a variety of ages. Definitely recommended!

CMV: A comic book priced at $2.99 or $3.99 is disproportionately expensive to the amount of entertainment that can be garnered from it. [R]

In the past I have tried to start reading comic books, but I find a certain hurdle that prevents me from really delving into the medium, the price. While three or four dollars is not much money on its own, the entertainment value of the product, in my experience, not worth the amount I pay. I'll use an example.

Recently, I bought the first issue of the new Ms. Marvel series at $2.99. In it, there were 20 pages of story and it took me about 10-15 minutes maybe to read through the whole book. There were about four scenes in the book (the store, the house, the party, and Kamala gaining her powers), all of which served to introduce Kamala, but little else. While the narrative was entertaining, it stopped the moment it began to develop, leaving a hook for the reader to dish out an additional three dollars to further the story.

Conversely, a film ticket may cost about three times as much (about seven-ten dollars depending on where and when you buy the ticket), but for that price you're getting at least an hour and a half of entertainment with a full three act story. A book can cost between five to twenty dollars, but for that price you're getting at least several hours worth of entertainment.. I've read other comics and I can usually finish an issue in about 10 minutes. To me, paying three or four dollars for about ten minutes of entertainment is not worth it.

Indeed. The comic market is targeted toward the "early adopters" who can't wait for each new bite sized bit of plot, but they do pick up the rest of us on the back end with the graphic novel collections. For your new Ms. Marvel example, this is taking pre-orders for an October release. There's a bit of a price break, and you get much more content at once which will probably leave people like us much more satisfied. For older series, there can be huge price breaks, and massive amounts of content in a single book, like this.
