Sodium/Potassium help [R]

1 year, 3 months agoUnlikeSpace3858 posted submission on keto.

I’m taking about 1 teaspoon of pink Himalayan salt and Morton’s Sodium free salt broken up through the day. About 80% RDA for both. I’m 5’9” 170 and get about 60,000 steps/week with 4 hours total exercise on average.

My diet usually falls short on potassium and sodium from food at about 70%. Am I supplementing correctly or is this an instance where I need blood work even if I feel fine?

Everyone has their recipes to cover electrolytes. Just make sure you're really getting what you need. Himalayan salt has trace minerals, so it's mostly sodium, you aren't getting coverage of potassium and magnesium in that.

2300-5000 mg Sodium. (FDA daily rec - keto minimum rec)

1000-4700 mg Potassium (keto minimum rec - FDA daily rec)

300-400 mg Magnesium (keto minimum rec - FDA daily rec)

My ketoade is 1/4tsp salt for sodium; 1/2tsp lite salt for sodium/potassium. You could also use 1/4tsp Nu/No Salt instead, or buy a potassium citrate powder; 1tsp magnesium citrate powder. I use a nice water bottle that unscrews so I can dump in the mixture and add water; 1Tbsp lemon juice; and sweetener. Tastes like a mild lemonade with 1060mg sodium, 700mg potassium, 162mg magnesium. You could also flavor it with Mio or powdered drink packet or other water enhancers, instead. Refrigerate and grab in the morning to drink throughout the day along with plain water, might want a couple bottles each day. It leaves room to get electrolytes in food, but ensures you get enough to not feel horrible if you can't get enough from meals.

Doing Keto for mental clarity and to feel good, but can't stay hydrated. [R]

May 22, 2018

I have done keto in the past for over a month, and I am back at it again a year later. I normally weigh 160-165, but am currently at 155 lbs after being back on keto for 2 weeks. I am NOT doing keto to loose weight, but rather for mental clarity, to feel good, and to gain the health benefits of being in ketosis. The hardest part for me the first time i did keto, and now this time is staying hydrated. I am constantly drinking water, but always remain thirsty and feeling dehydrated. I recently purchased two different electrolyte powders, both of which make me feel worse after drinking them? I cant point my finger on what it is about them that makes me feel worse, but i think it has something to do with the no carb sweetners. They always make me feel more anxious, or like i'm about to get a headache. I try to salt my foods with LOTS of pink sea salt. I drink a smoothy for breakfast with TONS of kale and spinach in it, with a small handful of blueberries. I usually eat a tomato and avocado for lunch, and some form of meat for dinner. I was hoping not to have to take any supplements. i think i should be getting enough salt. I suppose maybe i'm low in potassium and magnesium, but its hard to believe that just taking a pill would quench this thirst. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've read a few other posts here on hydration as well as the Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium recommendations, but was hoping for an alternative answer to taking a supplement. Thanks.

Electrolyte Help [R]

Hi guys. First time posting on here, and I just want to start off by saying how grateful I am for this community. I’ve been on a keto diet now for about 7 months and this subreddit is beyond helpful.

So I was wondering what you guys are using to meet your electrolyte needs and also how you track them. I find that this has been the hardest thing for me to stay on top of. I love this new lifestyle and want stay keto for the rest of my life, but this has been something I have really struggled with.

So far I have tried using Mio, Powerade Zero, and Megan Ramos’ salt under the tongue trick but I still feel the effects of low electrolytes. I supplement magnesium and potassium daily.

Just hearing what other people on this sub do daily I think would be super valuable. Thank you all in advance.

What vitamins do I need to be careful about? [R]

So I started doing keto about a week ago, and I’m feeling great.

My mom started this diet a year ago with amazing results and she’s so much happier. She’s been helping me through everything and it’s great. Since I’ve started I’ve been feeling like I have a lot more energy, I don’t need to eat as often, and I actually eat a lot less. I used to be able to eat my plate, seconds, and whatever my gf didn’t eat. Lol now I can barely eat a couple slices of fat head pizza!

Anyways I’ve been hearing that with this diet you don’t get certain vitamins and there is supplements your supposed to take, anyone care to help a brotha out?

Also I eat a lot of meat, like burgers, steak, and chicken. Will this effect the diet a lot or should I just try to eat less?

Hi guys,

I've watched my carb intake for sometime but I started a pretty strict keto diet in early April and I'm down a SOLID 14lbs but I'm getting to the point where I'm sick of food and I get sick on whatever I eat.

Thursday I broke keto on some potato salad and 2 michelob during a pretty deep emotional crisis. Spent the entire night vomiting into a trashcan and I'm not sure if this is carb reaction or just the other emotional shit that has come to a head.

Do you guys have any recommended tests I should take for blood, urine, etc.? I had a complete emotional crisis and for the first time in 27 years went to a shrink. I'm worried my diet may be exacerbating this due to lost nutrients.

EDIT: why the fuck is this getting downvoted? I thought you guys were a support community?

Thanks,

Make yourself a daily ketoade, easiest way to get what you need in decent amounts, drink it along with plain water to keep hydrated. Those minerals help with plenty of functions and when you're low you can feel like hell. Salt, [Lite Salt] (https://www.amazon.com/Morton-Salt-Lite-Less-Sodium/dp/B004AY43D2/) or Nu/No Salt, Magnesium Citrate. A salty bouillon broth is a quick and tasty way to get more sodium, too.

I'm on keto diet and entering in 3 weeks now. The first week felt great. I was more energetic and very sharp. Though my weight didn't move at all, i was getting toned. However, Keto rash, nausea, feeling like throwing up, and indigestion came through in week 2. I tried to get as much as on electrolytes, I have been taking magnesium, potassium, and vitamin B as well. I work out 6 days per week, mostly weight training. Plus, I drink more than 2L every day. Yet, I still have all those symptoms. About feeling like throwing up and nausea, I noticed it happens when I eat a lot (even though it was normal for me before). I don't get these symptoms in the morning when I eat a slice of bacon, scrambled eggs, and coffee with heavy cream. However, I feel like throwing up and nausea whenever I eat more than that especially for dinner. Keto rash is not too bad, but still it itches and bothers me. Plus, it's spreading more and more. I know one of the solution is to increase my carb intake or get out of Keto for few days, but I don't want to. I tried all the methods here, but didn't work.. Also, my weight still stays the same. Has anyone experienced similar? None of my family is experiencing it (we are all doing ketogenic diet), but me....:( Is keto diet not for me?

M/32 - 6’5” SW 395 and currently 378.

I tried keto once before. About 2-3 weeks in i believe I entered Keto flu and gave up. Felt like crap. Night sweats. Body was weak and sore.

I decided to give this another try. Also trying to get my girlfriend started as well so we can do this together.

Any tips or advice you can lend?

Gonna use MyFitnessPal. Been doing a bunch of research as far as foods to eat, snacks, eating on the go, etc.

Feeling like crap [R]

1 year, 3 months agoUnlikeSpace3858 posted submission on keto.
May 3, 2018

Hi ,

I have been struggling with IBS-C for years and eating gluten-free or w/o Fodmaps didn't help. I was feeling bloated, constipated all the time. I had very bad nausea too and stomach ache everyday.

I've been on and off keto for a few years, usually I will try to go keto for a few months (max. 4 months) but end up giving up everytime. My goal is to feel better and lose weight.

This time, i've been on keto for maybe 1 month and feel like crap all the time:

- I'm always exhausted. I can barely write this or be productive at work. I can't stay awake and I feel like i'm in a dream (sounds like depression right? weird.) I have the worse brain fog ever. However I already had that way before starting the keto diet. So I have no idea how to cure this

- I cant sleep at night. I haven't been able to sleep since I started the diet. I don't drink coffee except 1 cup in the morning. I'm drained and can't wait to go to bed, yet when i'm laying down I feel super dizzy, and have all the symptoms of anxiety x10. My heart is racing at night.

- I have to pee all the time, especially at night, I can't sleep and I feel like going to the bathroom every 2 hours. I end up going maybe 2 or 3 times in total. When I go back to bed, I just can't relax and i'm shaking from the anxiety or something.

- I've had chronic diarrhea for 5 days now. It's so bad. As I said, I'm usually IBS-C so I never knew what it was like to have diarrhea. I hate it and don't know what to do.

I try to eat well and take supplements (vitamins and magnesium)

I feel like giving up once again, because I'm SO exhausted. 2 years ago I did the keto diet for about 4 months and I really felt good so I don't know if maybe it's too early. I've been on keto for 1 month but about 3 months mainly low carb or gluten free and sugar free, with cheat days.

Thanks !

Hello lovely people! After about a month of research on how it works and how to do it, I decided to go keto 2 weeks ago for health reasons (besides losing weight). I keep seeing all these posts from people losing weight the first week, etc etc. As far as I can tell (just from signs and symptoms, without using testing strips), I haven't gotten in ketosis yet. These are my macros as calculated by Keto Mate, a nifty app that one of you all created. I've been very diligent about meeting and not exceeding these, and cutting all sugar. (F/31/5'6", SW 160)

Am I using wrong macros? Does it just take some people longer to get into ketosis? Obviously I'd like the weight loss but no weight loss means no ketosis which means no other health benefits :(

Hello everyone I am new here I started Keto along with my wife a week and and have lost about 8 lbs I’m sure it is probably all water weight or it is just because of my schedule. I work night shift 3 nights on 2 nights off 2 nights and 3 off so I will not eat the day before I go into work because I try to sleep most of the day and get a run in before I leave for work so for my daily eating usually only last from 7-12 on the days I work. Keto hasn’t been too hard to keep up with starting off we are just doing easy meal prep cooking measured hamburger cauliflower rice cheese bacon and all the easy stuff for right now. Before we started doing Keto I ran a half marathon and made a PR of 1:53:41. Now I’m trying to keep up with my running and just do 3.1 miles a day and have been doing that ever since I started Keto but it is getting harder and harder to do. I know i probably need to take a day off but is it just my body changing over from using my usual carbs as energy and will just take time to switch over to using fats or am I doing something wrong I’m sure someone else has has like experiences. If you made it here I’m Sorry for the lengthy post.

There is certainly a transition period from glucose to ketone energy. Your body needs to adapt to using ketones and fatty acids efficiently, and it can take months to reach fat adaption, but once you do it is a steady source of energy and endurance is great. But for now you're definitely pushing it. Keto is also diuretic, you lose minerals and that will drain energy fast. Unless you replenish them daily, your kidneys start recycling your water to hang onto salts, which can stall loss from dehydration. Easiest way to ensure you get some more electrolytes is drinking a ketoade daily. You can search out recipes and tweak a concoction of your own.

My ketoade is 1/4tsp salt for sodium; 1/2tsp lite salt for sodium/potassium. You could also use 1/4tsp Nu/No Salt instead, or buy a potassium citrate powder; 1tsp magnesium citrate powder. Hey everybody! I’m new to reddit, joined specifically for this subreddit so I’m pretty excited to be here. I started Keto four days ago and started getting flu symptoms yesterday late afternoon. I drank broth last night, added more salt to my meals today, and plan on buying some magnesium supplements today or tomorrow. I read in the FAQ that pickles/pickle juice are also great for sodium. I love eating pickles but should I also drink the leftover juice? Does anyone have any tips to get over this quicker? Is it bad for me to take medicine like NyQuil, Advil, or cough drops?

Lite Salt for sodium/potassium

Nu/No Salt for potassium

Potassium Citrate for potassium

Natural Calm powder for magnesium

Or look into electrolyte supplements like Nuun or Zipfizz

Ive seen posts about "ketoade" but im not sure thats what i'm looking for. Something about the idea of drinking salt and water doesn't appeal to me but maybe i'm missing something there.

But to my question. Other than "Ketoade" what do you guys recommend for a sports drink?

Exhausted on Keto! [R]

Hi ya’ll, I’m wiped out on keto and could use some extra advice. I’m remembering to drink some salt for electrolytes and resting 9 hours/night. But, I need more energy for work than I have right now and am hoping to find what I’m missing.

Adding a ketoade drink to your day might help. I was so run down on IF until getting my electrolytes in line. Tastes like a mild lemonade. You could also flavor with Mio or powdered drink packet or other water enhancers, instead. Refrigerate and grab in the morning to drink throughout the day along with plain water, might want a couple bottles each day. It leaves room to get electrolytes in food, but ensures you get enough to not feel horrible if you can't get enough from meals. Don't overdo your electrolytes, but keto is diuretic, you need to replenish electrolytes with nutrient rich foods or a supplemental drink or pills.

Also, your energy comes from fat, sometimes we cut back on fats too much when losing weight. You might try adding some coconut oil or cream to your morning coffee or mug of bouillon broth and see if it helps you feel more energetic, if it does, maybe you dropped your fat too much.

Struggling in a few different ways [R]

April 14, 2018

So I've been keto for 3 months, but I'm finding I'm really struggling. I should preface this by saying that I've lost weight before keto and kept it off. I had struggled to lose weight years ago thing the traditional low fat high carb diet, and not surprisingly, I wasn't successful. Then after years of struggling and trying weight watchers and calorie counting I tried Paleo. I didn't actually switch to Paleo for weight loss purposes. I did it for health reasons. My start weight was about 210 lbs and I ended up effortlessly losing about 50 lbs (I weighed about 160). I was eating so much food while losing! I know my calories would have been way higher than 2000. I honestly felt like it was a miracle and everyone should eat that way. I know my carbs were way lower than they had ever been before But I can't imagine that I was in ketosis because I was still eating lots of fruit. I ended up plateauing and I wanted to lose more weight (I was still a little overweight). So I tried keto (this was still years ago) and in 2 weeks I lost 10 lbs (got down to about 150 lbs)! Unfortunately I got very sick and ended up in the hospital. The doctors attributed it to keto, but looking back I don't think that was correct. So I stopped keto and went back to Paleo. I gained the weight back and my weight slowly creeped up (to about mid 170s). I ended up doing weight watchers and lost about 10 lbs which brought me back to the mid 160s. I was struggling to lose more and I was cold all thr time and felt like I had no energy. Over the past couple of years I also started with IF and before I started keto if I didn't eat OMAD I would gain weight.

I read "why we get fat" by Gary Taubes and the insulin theory seemed to make so much sense! I have up refined sugar and alcohol and then started keto... And I didn't lose anything... But I waited the first month, thinking my body just needs to adjust... My appetite just needs to adjust... I was in ketosis for sure (I bought a blood ketone meter and I was usually at about 1.6 mmol). But it became obvious that the calorie-density of my foods was a problem. Obviously I was eating too many calories. I was still doing IF and doing OMAD as much as a I could. I tried reducing the amount of food and the calories. It still seemed like to only way any weight would come off was with very low calories (1000-1200) but I wasn't finding that to be sustainable. I tried making sure that my protein was up but then I really had to watch my fat intake... I couldn't eat to satiety... The scale wasn't really moving at all. I was trying to keep my electrolytes up too, but I keep getting Charlie horses, so I'm guessing I'm not doing a fantastic job. Anyway, I tried doing some longer fasts. I started with 48 hours then 3 day long, but then I wanted to eat all the things when I was done. The weight came off faster with the fasting, But then I was just eating more when I wasn't fasting and the weight was going back on. I'm starting to get mad cravings amd I want to eat all the things. I'm at about 155 lbs right now, so after 3 months of keto and some fasting I'm down about 7 lbs... Last night I had an abdominal Charlie horse and it was terrible!

So I'm struggling with cravings, I'm struggling with electrolytes amd I'm struggling with the idea that if you keep your insulin low it shouldn't matter how many calories you eat (I know that's super controversial). That idea just made so much sense, so now I'm doubting keto. I feel like I shouldn't have to supplement electrolytes so much. It makes sense during the transition, but not for the long term.

Please help!

Adding a ketoade drink to your day might also help with appetite suppression, since your body will get the micronutrients it is craving due to your fasting regimes. How do you add in electrolytes and supplements into your diets? [R]

So, I've just started doing keto and am a few days in and the "keto flu" is hitting hard because before starting I was an avid consumer of all carbs. I've read that electrolytes are basically a necessity for sticking to a Keto diet, and I know they should also help to calm my "flu" symptoms some what so I can make it out. I considered drinking Gatorade before realizing how many sugar and carbs are in Gatorade. No thank you! How do you guys get more electrolytes? What kinds of supplements or drinks do you have to help keep your body in check?

I started doing keto last week and so far have had a great progress losing my first 10 lbs. I tested positive for ketones after 2 days of starting. And felt great in general with only a bit of transition keto flue at the beginning. But last night I woke up from this super weird feeling, almost like I'm in a free fall, but it's not so much in my stomach, more so in my muscles. I kept wanting to take deep breaths and shake my body. It didn`t matter what position I was in. It lasted awhile before I could fall asleep again. Please, help! I have NEVER felt anything like this. Does anyone know if this is somehow Keto related and if I should be concerned?

Electrolyte Question! [R]

April 9, 2018

Hey all, I've been lurking on this sub for a bit when I first started keto (and failed miserably). I've recently started reading the posts here more and more and it's motivated me to try this diet out again in conjunction with training for a half marathon this summer. I'm a pretty active person and keto flu hit me really bad last time around. I was struggling to get electrolytes and eventually just gave up on the diet all together because I felt like shit. I've decided to commit to the keto life for the next couple of months, and wanted to solicit some advice from the community about a good/easy way to get electrolytes.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks all!

Hey everyone! I just started the Keto diet today. Had my "bulletproof coffee" this morning and I'm about to heat up my chicken an broccoli. I'm trying to prepare myself for the so called Keto Flu, hopefully it won't be too bad. But anyways, my real question is. Are there any foods that you can eat unlimited of? Snacky type foods, I am a bit hungry right now, because all I've had was that coffee, and it is the first day on this diet, so I feel like I need to give it time for my body to adjust. Just wondering if I can eat veggie snacks or something in between meals?

Measure out 1/4tsp salt for sodium; 1/2tsp lite salt or 1/4tsp Nu/No Salt for potassium - if you can't get those, cream of tartar also contains a good amount of potassium or buy a potassium citrate powder; 1tsp magnesium citrate powder. Use a nice water bottle that unscrews so you can dump in your mixture and add water; 1Tbsp lemon juice or fresh squeezed; sweetener or granular Truvia or an erythritol, if needed. I use a nice water bottle that unscrews to pour in salts and add water; 1Tbsp [lemon juice] (https://www.amazon.com/Santa-Cruz-Organic-Lemon-Ounces/dp/B000RADQL8/);sweetener if needed. Refrigerate and grab in the morning to drink throughout the day along with plain water. It leaves room to get electrolytes in food. I have pills, but rarely need them. I don't need ketoade daily now, but have one made daily if needed. Depending on your activity and food intake you may need it some days more than others. I noticed at work, especially in summer, my activity required adding electrolytes, and a ketoade did wonders to improve my energy and mood.

I weigh the same and my measurements are the same too.

In those 2 weeks was counting NET carbs. Should I be changing to TOTAL carbs to be stricter?

I'm only drinking about a 1/2 gallon a day. Too little? I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Very essential on keto. Try making yourself a daily ketoade - 1/4tsp salt for sodium; 1/2tsp lite salt for sodium/potassium; 1tsp magnesium citrate powder, 1Tbsp lemon juice, stevia to sweeten. Put it in a nice 20-30oz water bottle. Makes a lemonade drink that provides a good amount of your electrolytes. Then you can eat spinach, avocado, cashews, and other foods at meals that contain electrolytes. When your electrolytes are covered, you'll process water better and not lose all your salts.

I take it to work and drink it throughout my day along with plain water. I also get some electrolytes in my dinner, but without a ketoade, I don't get enough electrolytes from food.

At some point you will need more electrolytes than you can eat, don't rely on store bought drinks. Make your own ketoade. 1/4tsp salt for sodium; 1/2tsp lite salt for sodium/potassium; 1tsp magnesium citrate powder in a water bottle with 1-2Tbsp lemon juice and sweetener if needed. There are different recipes, but it's more cost effective to make your own, compared to the amount of powerade zero or propel or mio you'd need.
