How accurate are modern gaming mice? [R]

I don't know what would be the appropriate subreddit for this, so i'm posting it in multiple.

Would it be possible to accurately measure distance or an object's perimeter? I would of course calibrate it first using a fixed known distance and only pick up direct mouse input (no acceleration).

I'm just wondering if this is even possible with current gaming mice.

Mice optical sensors are supposedly accurate to hundreds of DPI. IIRC even the classical Microsoft optical mouse is 800DPI at 125Hz so it should be capable of up to 1/800th of an inch precision and should sample 125 times per second.... ideally Mice with high quality sensors will be capable of thousands of DPI and hundreds to thousands of Hz.

As I said, those ratings are under ideal conditions. For one, the Hz limits how fast you can move the mouse. And more importantly, it depends on the surface you're using the mouse on. For example, my Logitech mouse is supposedly 1000 DPI, but if I use it on anything that's not a cloth mousepad, I get around 600ish and it's very inconsistent.

You can test your mouse by going to this site:

Try dragging your mouse one inch on that site and see if it matches your mouse DPI rating.

Same here. I got the Pro for home and this 203 for work since it fits my style better. I used to use the MS Optical Wheel mouse and this mouse reminds me of how I used to hold that one, but with improvements. The deathadder elite was comfortable at first, but not as precise when I needed to go extra claw-like with my fingertips.

I'm using a microsoft laser mouse (laser was a HUGE deal when my dad bought it, upgrading from a ball mouse) that's 16 or so years old. It's been a great mouse for how many years we have used it but it has an issue of disconnecting and reconnecting now. Not sure exactly why this happens. It has worked without a problem until about a year ago it started to sometimes disconnect and reconnect.

Mouse for fingertip grip [R]

Nov. 26, 2016

Hey guys, can anyone recommend me a good mouse that will be good with my fingertip grip? My budget's around $40-50. Thanks!

I'd rather the mouse not have too many buttons, L/R, mousewheel is enough for me.

Looking for a highly durable mouse. [R]

Please don't say a G502, lol. It's out of my price range, and I will never use any of those extra buttons.

So, I've $50 to spend on a mouse. I'm looking for one that is durable to the extreme, when it comes to clicking. Every mouse that I've used hasn't ever lasted a year; some less than a month. I play an ancient game called RuneScape, which is super grindy and calls for an excessive amount of clicking.

I looked through Logictec's site, browsed Amazon, rifled around Razor, and then searched for awhile through this SubReddit. Since I'm obviously posting here now, that wasn't enough and I still need help, lol.

It must be:

  • Wired USB.
  • $50 or under.

Brand, laser/optical, extra buttons, DPI, and weight don't matter to me. As long as it can withstand hundreds of thousands of clicks a day, I'm happy. I will note that I seem to hold a mouse in a 'claw' fashion, but I honestly don't care what shape the mouse is.

Thank you.

I've actually been thinking about just going retro and buying one of those. Sadly, they aren't that cheap, though. If you buy used - certainly. But new ones are still $20-30+. As an example, here's an Amazon listing for that mouse:

I'm testing out a G502 right now! The thing is mostly comfortable, but it rides significantly higher than this old hunk o' junk that I'm used to (and while according to Amazon my current mouse is heavier than the G502, that couldn't be further from the truth; the G502 is noticeably heavier than the Microsoft mouse).

I'm looking to maybe get a Corsair Sabre to match my K70 LUX RGB I'll be getting soon... hopefully my local Best Buy has one so I can give it a test run.

Don't use a laser mouse for fps games, it's not a good idea, the sensors have acceleration issues.

I been looking on Amazon for a decent mouse for 30 bucks. I would want one that is wired and optical

All the ones I found either have the looks, but looks cheaply made or above my price.

(P.S. A keyboard under 50 for later when I want a new keyboard. The ones I find are either mechanical ones that are 100 bucks or those cool looking ones that have shitty laptop keys).

Maybe this is the wrong subreddit to do it on, but hey, Mouse and Keyboard are essential for a PC.

4 years, 2 months agoJacmert posted on starcraft.
Aug. 27, 2015

Not necessarily? There's a really good chance he's referring to the Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical because I think that one's way more common, and the Microsoft Intellimouse with the (lighter) gray wheel is the 1.1a version and they don't even make that anymore, I don't think. Progamers used to use that one, such as for FPS's, I think. The newer Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0 (also discontinued afaik) is black and has a really dark gray wheel.

Tl;dr I would guess he's referring to the Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical, the non-fancy kind you find everywhere

I've recently resubbed to get back in the game and I want to be more more competitive in ops and pvp. I currently use an older version of this mouse But was wondering if I should look into a more mmo style mouse with numbers on the sides. So what would be the best mouse for swtor?

Accept no substitutes :) I'm too used to key bindings centered around WASD and shift/ctrl/alt modifiers so any mouse/keyboard combo will do and I'm allergic to spending more than $10 on a basic peripheral otherwise I'd pick up one of these newer mouse designs. All in all, I'm very competitive in all areas of the game and I guess it comes down to what your muscle memory is used to.

My G500 started bugging out on me after almost 2 years of faithful service, just double clicking on every other click. Dumbass me decided "fuck the warranty, Logitech will take months to replace this. I'll just fix it myself! Huzzah!"

Turns out it's a fairly common issue caused by the copper spring in the clicking mechanism deforming and losing tension. I proceed to hack my way into the button mechanism, make a complete hash of "repairing" the copper, do a half-ass job of putting it back together, snapping the side-buttons panel's cord in the process. Eventually I ended up with a totally demolished left button and a mangled mouse. Fuck me sideways.

Microsoft makes good ones. You would not believe it from their other products. Light yet sturdy, ambidextrous but ergonomic and they have good feel even when they are not pricey. And there is nothing extra that you only mess up with.

I'm using "comfort mouse 3000". I used to have one that was slightly bigger and it did fit my hand better, but other than that I could not wish for better.

Ironically only mouse that I never had problems with in Linux was made by Microsoft.
