Mouse for MacBook Pro 13" 2017 [R]

1 year, 1 month agonudoru posted submission on macgaming.
July 19, 2018

Hi,

I just installed LoL on my new Mac and I was really looking forward to playing with better graphics but as there is no USB slot I had to use a Bluetooth mouse and somehow it feels absolutely terrible. I don't know, maybe it's a delay? And usually the mouse sensitivity that was in my LoL client was always the same regardless of which mouse I used but the settings don't seem to apply to a Bluetooth mouse. Did I do anything wrong? What kind of mouse do you use for the MacBook Pro 13" 2017? Is there a way to use my old mouse with a dock/adapter/tool? (I don't know the right word in English)

Thanks so much in advance!

Advice for mouse: no rubber, thumb/side button, no boor design, wireless [R]

1 year, 11 months agoekt__ posted submission on MouseReview.

I profoundly hate rubber, i think its just a way to force me buy a new mouse every few months. Casual game player, no requirements as a pro gamer. Side button is really usefull in apps I use (3d modeling). Mouse which resembles a tattooed spaceship is not my fetish - I much prefer stylised/essential design. Wireless would be nice, but not essential

weight is not an issue. at work I use this which is heavy af and at home I have this which is quite light. both are fine for me. if I had to choose i'd pick the haevy one. AA batteries can be rechargable too. but really. really. i hate rubber! from what i've read g403 is also quite new. so maybe no one has complained 'yet'. thanks for answering however

Help choosing Surface Book peripherals [R]

1 year, 11 months agowinterharvest posted submission on Surface.

I need some guidance on Bluetooth mice and keyboards.

I use a Surface Book for all my studying and after a neck problem, I've been advised to use a laptop stand (I'm probably going to plump for the Roost stand). However, this obviously means I need a portable mouse and keyboard, and I'm having trouble finding any that fit my criteria- hopefully someone will be able to help me.

I'm a big fan of the Surface keyboard, so I'll probably go for the portable version, even though its a bit pricey, unless anyone has any better suggestions. Bluetooth is a must, and I'd like it to basically look and feel as close to the Surface keyboard as possible.

In terms of mice- I need one with at least 3, preferably 4 or more, additional buttons over the normal three. I don't want a gaming mouse that looks overly aggressive or has like 60 buttons- it seems to be impossible to find a businesslike mouse with a few extra buttons that I can programme with macros.

I use Anki a lot, and need a very efficient way of highlighting and then using the buttons to copy, paste and then cloze (Ctrl-Alt-C) the selection, as I was beginning to get RSI from doing it with the keyboard shortcuts. So three extra buttons, not including the scroll wheel, for not too much money, is what I'm looking for.

One thing I've found particularly useful is a Bluetooth-based wireless mouse. Since Surface Pros only have one USB port, the last thing you want is to have a mouse with a dongle.

Recommendations for mouse that won't disconnect [R]

2 years, 6 months agoJan. 31, 2017

I've tried everything... turning off every battery saving option, uploading drivers manually, etc... and I am still getting lag/disconnects with both of my Microsoft mouses. I'm not sure if it is caused by being in an apartment complex with tons of 2.4ghz wifi connections... or simply fickleness of the wireless chip in the surface. But I'm annoyed =p

Any recommendations?

Thanks =)

I was going to recommend the sculpt comfort mouse. It's been flawless for me on my SP3 - this is actually my second, I lost one.

I don't think a surface version of the sculpt exists, so that makes me think you are referring to the Arc mice, perhaps?

NOT directv now to be clear. It is kind of like the difference between HBO Go/Now. If you already have Directv, you can download an app to watch it on your tablet/ect for free.

Accessories for using surface surface as a more permanent work station? [R]

2 years, 9 months agoIAmTheOnlyAndy posted submission on Surface.
Oct. 27, 2016

Hey guys,

I've come into a situation where I need to set up a small home office and I'm trying to decide between purchasing a dedicated laptop or if I should purchase some accessories for my SP4. I don't really know what brands are good or work well with it.

I need a keyboard (USB is fine even wired would be acceptable as I'll only use it at home - must have a number pad), monitor, and mouse. I'm thinking about the surface arc mouse since it would be easy to travel with and use on the go but it is expensive.

To tie it all together I'd like to try the surface hub but it sure seems expensive for what it is.

What do you guys recommend? I'd really like to keep it under $500. I'm in Canada and this would all likely be purchased on Amazon Canada.

Thanks!

2 years, 9 months agoIAmTheOnlyAndy posted on Surface.
Oct. 28, 2016

Ok first tip. Don't jump the gun when buying quality products. Let's talk about how purchasing electronics works when you're on a budget. Test everything you can. Go to the nearest Microsoft store, try out as many peripherals as you can. Then come home and start comparing those with cheaper items. I'm going to first assume you're going to buy an SP4. You haven't specified a budget for the laptop if you decide on buying one so no one can help you unless you decide to set a budget for the laptop

Mouse:

The Arc Mouse for example sounds great but is the trade-off of convenience worth the price? What type of bag will you carry it in when you travel? Will it have enough room for a slightly larger, normal compact mouse that you can get for ~$25?

Monitor:

Do you care about your resolution quality? Is there really a difference for you between full HD and 4k? Do you need 4k? I recommend looking up some stuff from Dell/LG if you want quality. Budgeting is a little bit fickle when it comes to monitors. You can probably get an HD 24'' monitor for ~$130. 4K monitors will cost you $300 upwards. When you're a budget you have to ask a lot of these questions, sadly.

Docking Station If you're buying a monitor do you need a docking station? If so: A lot of people miss the opportunity here. SP4 works with the SP3 docking station. If you decide to go this route, make sure your local microsoft store can provide you with the adapter according the article. If you want a portable docking station, you definitely could go with the regular surface docking station. Just keep in mind if you're calculating your docking station into your budget you just lost $200. OR you can buy a third party docking station, it just won't be specialized to work with the Surface; you lose a usb 3.0 port if you do go third-party.

There are cheaper options that are just as good as the the one I suggested. Once you find something reasonable, read reviews, watch reviews/unboxing videos off youtube of the product you're considering to get a good idea of what you're buying.

The reason I'm telling you to look for stuff instead of suggesting things is because electronics is really all about comfort and productivity. There shouldn't be a lot of trade-off.

I'm looking for a normal sized (non-mobile), wireless mouse for work. Why is this so difficult to find? [R]

2 years, 10 months agoNethid posted submission on computers.
Oct. 6, 2016

I'm honestly kind of taken aback at how difficult it is nowadays to find a normal sized wireless mouse. The market is completely over-saturated with mobile mice. If you look at Logitech's website, 90% or more of their mice are mobile. If they aren't mobile, they're trackballs. If they aren't trackballs they're weird ergonomic designs. Same with Microsoft mice, except theirs tend to be very poor quality. I don't need a gaming mouse with LEDs and 18,000 buttons.

I want a basic fucking human-sized mouse for work. Why the hell is this so difficult?

Honestly, I need help finding something.

  • Wireless
  • Normal shape (examples : 1, 2, 3)
  • Normal desktop size, non-mobile
  • I need left click, right click and a scroll wheel. That's it. A few thumb buttons is no big deal.
  • Decent reviews if available

I'm not asking for much, but for some reason this seems to be nearly impossible to find.

This post describes using Mouse Acceleration Toggle to enable and disable Enhanced Precision. With Enhanced Precision on my SP4, the touchpad works really well, and mice are overly sensitive. With it disabled, mice work, but the touchpad takes forever to scroll across the screen.

Can we somehow detect that the Type Cover has been attached or removed from the Surface? Or that a mouse (USB or Bluetooth) has been connected? If so, that could run Mouse Acceleration Toggle with relevant command line switches to adjust settings per the current setup.

Surface Pro 4 needs another USB port. [R]

4 years agoCaptainIncredible posted submission on Surface.
Aug. 20, 2015

My Asus EP121 12" Win7 tablet had two USB ports and to this date it has still remained arguably the more useful device because of the extra ports.

I realize that the internals of the SP3 are very jam-packed, however a dual USB controller does not inherit much more of a footprint than a singular USB 3.0 port internally. If the engineering team was told they must include another one in their next device, it would be possible.

Externally, there are inches upon inches of unused space on the left side where obviously another USB port belongs.

Due to the SP 1-3 only having one USB port, there are many capabilities that they lack that a powerful PC should not lack. As a power user I generally have multiple flash drives and external HDDs being used in conjunction, and this prevents me from using the SP as my main device. I understand that I could buy a hub or dock, but those take up extra space and cost more money.

The Surface Pro 4, in order truly be pro, needs to have two or more USB ports.

I have a neoprene sleeve that my SP3 fits in. It has a side pouch that I use to store the charger, pen, MS mouse and a few other things like USB cable, USB drive, etc. It was a great purchase. Its padded a bit so its protected my SP3 a bit.

I'm agravated that it doesn't have a carry handle or some kind of external loops that I could attach a carry handle or a shoulder sling.

If I had to do it over again, I'd make sure the model I buy has that... I guess that's just me though. You might not mind it.

Also this is the mouse. Its nice.

Yeah, I keep hearing that. I looked at them, and you are right. As someone who does art only once in a while, it has things I don't need and doesn't have things I want. And its expensive. :P

And I use a Microsoft Mouse. It cost me $25 or something and its a great mouse.

Surfa Pro 3 - Ultimate travel kit [R]

4 years, 6 months agoBKachur posted submission on Surface.
Feb. 2, 2015

I recently purchased a SP3 I5/236GB with a type cover. I started brainstorming about what the ultimate travel kit would be and i think I might have nailed it:

The reason behind the HDE 3.5mm jack is that you might need to add power to the USB hub at some point for some power hungry peripheral, and it would simply plug in to the USB outlet on the Power Supply of the Surface

As an aspiring photographer, fitting all these item in my camera bag + SP3 & power supply would not really add much more bulk, and I would be prepared for pretty much any situation.

What do you guys think? Do you have any suggestions / changes to make this better?

PS: I did think about the Plugabble USB dock but it still lacks the card reader which is essential for photographers, and most of the time you will only need the USB hub.

That Arc Touch mouse, while nice is stupid expensive and really doesn't simulate the feel of an actual mouse. Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Mouse is a third of the price, has bluetooth so you don't lose the USB port and has this nifty windows button with swype gestures that is super useful.

Most of the mice with included dongles are not standardized so you probably cannot pair them. However, if you are looking for a Bluetooth mouse that works without a dongle. I, and I think most users here would recommend the Microsoft Sculpt mouse.

I just bought it last night to replace an Apple Magic Mouse. It is incredible and is even advertised to work on carpet. (hint: it does!) Best of all, it was the same price at on Best Buy's website which I got Office Depot to price match instead of having to wait for it to ship from Amazon. It paired and installed in under a minute to my SP3. The windows button sits just in front of my thumb and is a nice touch. Scrolling left and right on the mouse as well as up and down is a feature I never thought I needed until now.

I've had my SP3 for a little more than a week now and there are some issues that I'm running into with it.

  • The pen will randomly stop working while I'm writing notes in One Note (It is not a battery or battery contact issue)
  • When writing notes in One Note in portrait mode, my wrist will rub against the Windows button and it will go to the app screen. (Very annoying)
  • When using Desktop Internet Explorer, the keyboard does not come up automatically when I select a textbox
  • Xbox Music Metro App does not have a "Log In" button, which is annoying when I get randomly disconnected and can no longer listen to music past 30 seconds.

I hardly ever use mine. I'm glad its there, but I'm usually baffled by people who want more than one. I bought a cheap USB 3.0 hub, and I never use it. Actually, I'm not even sure where it is at the moment. In a pile of crap in my office I think?

>so I hook up a mouse whenever I am working. However, because the surface hard drive is limited in space and I am often working with large files, I prefer to keep a lot of junk on an external storage device like a USB stick.

Ah... Ok. I get it.

  1. Use a bluetooth mouse. I bought this one damn thing works great.

  2. Buy a microSD card if you need more space. Someone posted one on here before Christmas that was cheap and very fast.

[Stick] Bluetooth Keyboard Pairs (With Ease) [R]

For what it's worth, I was able to pair a HP Touchpad bluetooth keyboard with ease. I sideloaded Settings.apk via airdroid (after sideloading airdroid via adb). From there, I was able to pair the keyboard and needed only type in the password and press (via the keyboard).

I use a Microsoft Sculpt Comfort. It's cheap, has thumb functions, and uses Bluetooth instead of USB which frees my two USB ports for other things. If I ever need to use a mouse for very long periods of time though or need it to work on any surface (e.g. hackathon), I use a Logitech Performance MX

I've been looking for a replacement for my laptop for a while, I'm moving from a uber powerful desktop replacement machine because I would like something more portable as I'm travelling more now and needing to run virtual server setups less ;)

I'd looked at various ultrabooks, my favourites were the Yoga 2 Pro and the UX303LN but after comparing ultrabooks physically in store with a Surface I was pretty convinced. I've got an iPad but always lament the change in ecosystem as I swap between it. I can't keep editing my document or using lync or resume my RDP session nearly as well on the iPad. All these things are possible of course but they are achieved differently and that until now was a necessary evil. The theory is the surface should eliminate that as I undock or just carry as a tablet and I've got the exact same interaction experience. (with slightly different controls of course, virtual keyboard is fine)

The model I'm getting is the i7 256gb one, as I understand this has the HD5000 graphics but even so it isn't going to be much of a gaming substitute for the alienware. I'm happy enough to play emulators and lower settings on some regular games, I'm definitely in the casual gamer category and play things like fallout 3 and NV, anyone got any experience of how those run on an SP3?

Also, what apps should I be looking for when I first get started? I mainly use Windows 7 on my current one but I've played with 8 and some apps on a desktop, I'm hoping the experience will feel more natural on the Surface. I manage Windows 2012 servers so I'm assuming the RSAT will be handy (something I can't run on Windows 7) but any neat app suggestions appreciated.

My main tasks are likely to be: Monitor/manage servers Edit/create documents/forms Remote support (logmein most often) Play games Watch videos Listen to music

I also currently use dropbox a lot, is there any reason I can't continue to do so or should I be looking to swap to onedrive?

Any help/advice appreciated, I need some distraction whilst I'm bouncing off the walls waiting for the order and delivery to happen :D

Hey, its no problem. Glad to hear you are excited about it. I've had mine since launch day here in the US and I've got to say I am still fascinated and delighted with it.

>£100 it seemed like a no brainer on such an expensive device.

Wow! 3 years, I only have 2. Mine cost $150. Sounds like you got the better deal.

I agree, it seemed a small price to pay for accidental coverage. It works out to $6.50 a month, which is the cost of a Guinness or two (depending on happy hour prices.)

As for the keyboard, I don't see what others are bitching about. I find it to be no better or worse than any other laptop keyboard I've ever used.

And if for some reason you need to type a 5000 page report for 8 hours straight, simply plug a nice mechanical keyboard into the USB slot... Or use a Bluetooth keyboard...

BTW, I have a Bluetooth mouse from MS I really like, and a nice neoprene case to carry it in. The Macbook case fits nicely.

http://www.amazon.com/rooCASE-Neoprene-MacBook-11-6-inch-MD711LL/dp/B004BQTSKC/

And with your i7 and 8GB ram, you shouldn't have any trouble turning on HyperV and setting up some VM's if you want. Or you could use Virtual Box.

Microsoft has a whole new line that's meant specifically to be paired with Windows tablets like the Surface. They're small, high in quality and should have pretty decent battery life.

For a mouse, I think this looks pretty decent

as for the keyboard, this might be too small for some, but I'd take a look any way.
