Dash Cams [R]

1 year, 11 months agoThisisNOTAbugslife posted submission on personalfinance.
April 30, 2018

After my wife telling me numerous stories of being ran off the road and close calls, I researched and ultimately purchased two $100 dash cams for both of our vehicles for a total of about $198 on Amazon . They came with a power adapter and a 16GB Micro SD card as a part of a limited time promotion. I installed both of them earlier this year by myself within a few hours by using barebones soldering skills and some common hand tools for a “stealth wiring” configuration.

Recently, my wife was in an accident and our dash cam has definitively cleared us of all liability. The other party claimed that my wife was at fault and that her lights were not on. Her dash cam showed that not only was my wife’s lights on prior to the impact, but the other party was shown clearly running a stop sign which my wife failed to mention in the police report due to her head injury. Needless to say, our $200 investment has already paid for itself.

With all of that in mind, I highly recommend a dash cam in addition to adequate insurance coverage for added financial peace of mind. Too many car accidents end up in he said/she said nonsense with both parties’ recollection being skewed in favor of their own benefit.

Car accidents are already a pain. Do yourselves a favor and spend $100 and an afternoon installing one of these in your vehicle. Future you will inevitably thank you someday.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for sharing your stories and asking questions. I’m glad I can help some of you out. With that said, I keep getting the same question frequently so here’s a copy/paste of my response.

Wheelwitness HD is the dash cam I own.

Honestly, anything with an above average rating of 4 stars in the $100 range that isn’t a recognized name brand is pretty much a rebrand of other cameras. If it has a generic name, I can guarantee you that they all use a handful of chipsets that can record at different settings depending on how capable it is. The only difference will be the physical appearance but guts will mostly be the same.

As a rule of thumb, anything $100+ will probably be a solid cam. I recommend a function check monthly at a minimum. I aim to do it once a week. I found mine frozen and not recording one day. Just needed a hard reboot.

I was screaming dash cam for awhile. I bought one 2 years ago for $160 on Amazon. EXACTLY 1 year later the battery completely died and now it no longer saves the most recent video. Warranty is no longer covered and I am out $160. These things are known for dying after ~year so if you do buy one, look for warranty coverage for full replacement up to at least 2 years.

I even took extra special care to try to keep it out of direct sunlight when I leave the car, etc. All for nothing in the end.

KDLINKS X1 GPS

I bought it 3 years ago on sale. I don't remember what I paid at the time, I think it was on sale then. There are much cheaper ones available now. I've been very happy with this one so far. I've been watching prices because I want to get a rear view as well as dash. I got it because I was involved in an accident. Fortunately he didn't deny fault but it got me thinking a dash cam is essential to protect yourself now.

Can anyone recommend a good dashcam? [R]

Assuming everyone here has a car, I would like to assume most have a dash cam. I am in need of one and have had rather poor luck getting a good dash cam. I ordered a couple off of Amazon for around $50 but ended up getting cheap Chinese made models that were either really shitty or was not user friendly, or was in a foreign language.

Anyone recommend a decent dashcam? Looking for one preferably that is easy to use and works well at night.

547.501 DART police gave me a ticket for honking at him when the light was green. [R]

Has anyone had this happen to them? I was downtown by El Centro at Main Street. The light turned green, I waited approximately 5 seconds, and gave him a polite short honk to get his attention because the light was green. He pulled me over and since he couldn't cite me for anything else wrote me a ticket for audible warning device. Transportation code 547.501 is the violation he wrote on the ticket. After I signed the ticket, he walked away without giving me a copy. I assume to either screw me over by making it hard for me to follow up, or in hopes I would forget, and it would go to warrant. This guy was a complete dick. Anyone have any advice?

I use this KDLinks one. $170, but it's 1080p, wide angle, and takes great night video. I bought it over 2 years ago, and when it somehow broke a couple months ago (maybe heat) the company sent me a new one. Highly recommend.

Expecting retaliation. Thinking about getting a dashcam. [R]

KDLINKS X1 is what I bought. It nerfed the 32GB SDCard I bought for it so I could record up to 6 hours after a couple months, however, I found the 8GB card it comes with to be sufficient in handling the heat. The 8GB card records up to 2 hours at a time at 480p then writes over it as it seamlessly records in 3 to 5-minute intervals. I've used this for a year and a half without too much of an issue. It hasn't had a problem with S.A. summer heat. I recommend buying a 3 prong USB car outlet along with it. It comes with a GPS holder which shows how fast you're driving on the camera.

NY - Assigned parking spaces at apartment complex, neighboring car repeatedly opens her car door into my new car, what can I do? [R]

NY, USA - The neighboring car to my assigned parking spot in my apartment complex has repeatedly opened her car door into my new car. I know it is her because her car is white and I have dents with white paint scattered all over the side of my car, one side only.

I'm not sure what to do next, besides the obvious telling her to stop, but I also am hoping I can get some recourse here, so I don't want that encounter to ruin my chances.

From searching the internet and talking to my parents, it sounds like it will be really hard to prove it was the neighbor car.

What do you all recommend?

Edit: Got a picture of my blue paint on her car door. Still haven't gotten a dash cam yet, that is in the works. I will be taking a picture of my car door with white paint and the dent. Will this be enough without video?

> Is there a cheap dashcam that will do the trick?

Define cheap. Dash cams can range all over the place.

>Do they run on batteries?

Most dedicated dash cameras run off the 12V port connected to the car battery. For your purposes I'd recommend buying one with motion detection so it's only on and recording when it detects motion nearby.

This is the one I use. Best bang for the buck in my opinion:

Do people know how to drive on campus? [R]

2 years, 8 months agoJuly 6, 2017

This happened twice this morning, within minutes of each other. First was some random car, other was a housing facility van. I'm rolling up to a stop sign, I see the other car rolling up as well. They come to a complete stop, as is the law, about 2-3 seconds before I come to a complete stop. At this point when I get to a complete stop, I'm curious as to why they still aren't continuing on their route; who knows maybe they're trying to figure out directions. So not only to be polite but literally following the law and allowing them their right of way, I stay stopped. Much to my surprise, both times, I'm honked at by them and then get the typical 'arms thrown in the air' like they cannot comprehend my thought process, so I proceed to go; and both times they continue to go right after me. Clearly they weren't lost, so what's the deal? Sorry mostly just ranting as I still don't have class for 2 hours, so if this post doesn't interest you just down vote to oblivion please so at least I know

I got mine on Amazon. Currently using a KDlinks X1 and it's not too bad. You could probably get one that does the same for a bit cheaper, or one with more features for a similar price. Don't cheap out though, nothing worse than thinking you have video of something then realizing your cam just wasn't recording, or the quality is bad.

There are a ton of reviews for cams online that you can check out. You might even consider getting a dual channel one, (a camera in the front and back) considering how much people tailgate around here.

Hi so I just received the X1 as my first dash cam and wanted to see if there's any further consensus on how good it is/isn't. From what I've seen online, people seem to indicate that the customer service is stellar but there have been a decent amount horror stories about it in the heat that it's made me a bit weary. I live in New Mexico, so in the summer it's pretty common to have temps in the 90's and occasionally dip over 100.

Any feedback on if I should stick with this (it's already been given to me, was a surprise), or try to return it and get another one would be greatly appreciated. My two big concerns are I want a cam that (1) doesn't fall apart if left in a car in the Summer, and (2) ideally isn't crazy conspicuous, though I can live with modifying a camera to make it more subtle (ie, if I keep the X1 I'll paint the silver edge around the lens black so it doesn't scream "fancy camera" from outside lookers).

Thanks in advance for any help!

Edit: meant more subtle, not less.

> FTA: High Quality Li-polymer 3.7v 110mah battery can bear high/low temperature, with official MSDS report and the most strict PONY Lab Certificate (Tested: 6+ hours in 170°F, 6+ hours in -40°F).

As you may have noticed, the inside vehicle temperature, is greater than the temperature outside, and that goes double for anything on the dashboard.

> FTA: There have been a number of reports of the battery swelling / exploding due to high heat in the kdLinks X1. The following review was posted on Amazon then later deleted.

> Here are some other pictures of a swelled up battery.

Ways you can counter this is by cracking the windows, or having window vents, or rain protectors on your vehicle, or solar powered vent or taking the dash camera off the dashboard. None are fool proof, but you got what you got.

> (2) ideally isn't crazy conspicuous, though I can live with modifying a camera to make it less subtle (ie, if I keep the X1 I'll paint the silver edge around the lens black so it doesn't scream "fancy camera" from outside lookers).

Being less discreet than others is a negative. Most can use a black sharpie to black out the silver parts of the dash cam.

Bottom line: You should be thankful someone was thinking of you, but that dash camera might not be great for your region of use. Lipo (Lithium Ion Polymer) batteries aren't recommended for hotter climates, they swell, leak, explode, catch fire, and are vulnerable to heat. I would be wary of any dash camera that is not Capacitor based.

<hr />

So you seem to know what you don't want, but what do you want?

Do you value super wide angle vision and don't mind fish eye speed/motion blur/distance distortion? (165* ultra wide angle lens) Or do you value attempting to capture license plates more? (140* angle lens is pretty good at this)

Example: Xiaomi Yi ($50 USD) 165 Ultra Wide angle lens.

How discreet do you wish the dash camera to be?

Example: G1W-CB ($50 USD) is between the two scales. Would you want it to be more or less discreet than this?

Do you value dual cameras? So not all accidents is obvious who is at fault, and dual cams really improves parking mode.

Example: Watch this video - Are you able to figure out what exactly happened with the front video camera? It isn't the cammer's fault, but who is isn't exactly clear.

Checking the comments for the rear view you can see exactly what happened.

Do you value an Excellent park mode, or are you okay with a lackluster parking mode?

Example: Benefits of parking mode in general

Example #2: Do you always back into the spot?

Excellent parking mode is automatically enabled/disabled, buffered (few seconds before and after motion sensing activated,) low voltage while in use (the dash camera is on, but only writes Micro SD card when motion detection program is triggered,) built in low voltage detection/battery protection (many dash cams you have to purchase a separate kit which may or may not be preset/unchangable this works for some vehicles, but not all,) and discreet enough not to draw extra attention.

The following are dash cams with excellent park modes and are heat resistant.

  • Thinkware F50 1-CH ($90-110 USD) is an excellent park mode dash cam, with 1080p but only fair video quality. 1 ch - so it is only one camera.

  • BlackSys CH-100B 2-Channel ($269.99 USD) Good video quality day/night/shadow. 1080P Front, 720P rear. Excellent parking mode. Good build quality. Has Wifi. If you value Excellent Parking mode dual channel dash cameras, and don't want gimmicky stuff this is the one. - Optional GPS - Not really movable to other vehicles. - Bottom line: Budget dual camera, has good build quality.

  • BlackVue DR650S-2CH($360 - $10 = $350 USD) Good video quality day/night/shadow. 1080P Front, 720P rear. Excellent parking mode. Good build quality. Has Wifi. If you value Excellent parking mode dual channel dash cameras, that has cell phone notifications of G sensor activation while in park mode - This is the one. - Optional GPS - Not really movable to other vehicles.

  • Thinkware F770 ($360 - $10 = $350 USD) Good video quality day/night/shadow. 1080P Front, 1080P rear. Excellent parking mode. Has wifi. If you value Excellent parking mode dual channel dash cameras, that always saves the crash - This is the one. - Optional GPS. - Not really movable to other vehicles.

These dash cams have a lackluster park mode, but are heat resistant.

  • A118C ($50 USD) Good video quality, better build quality, but bad park mode.

  • A119 ($80-100 USD) is a much nicer video quality dash cam, but bad park mode.

As the title says, my car was involved in a hit and run. It was parked on the side of the road and sometime during the night, some idiot plowed into my car and destroyed it. Obviously I am not a bit paranoid, so I want to invest in a dash cam. I was doing some research and found one made by Lumina (Linked below) and it seems to be pretty good. So my question for you guys, what type of dash cam do you use/recommend? Would this one be a good investment?

Also, I would like something that can record while parked (as that was when my car was hit).

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

The only minor issue I've had is that after three years of baking in the sun the plastic has faded a bit. Functionally this thing just keeps going. The integrated GPS works great, the menus are easy to use, and it's super easy to mount.

I've seen so many videos lately (and I myself have experienced it) of drivers cutting off RVs or Trucks/Trailers that I want to have a dash cam to ensure if someone does something stupid I'm not found liable for it. We're about to start on a 4 month road trip in April, and I'm wondering if folks think its worth it to get a dash cam. If so, do you guys have any recommendations that you're currently using? I'm considering a Thinkware, either the F50 (as a budget model since we don't drive at night very often) or the F770 as a higher end option.

Any thoughts?

In my opinion, everyone should have a dash cam. It can potentially save you thousands of dollars if you get into an accident. It doesn't matter if you're a good driver, because guess what? Other people aren't. And you're driving within inches and feet of those people every day, especially in the city.

One of my friends just got into an accident when another car ran a stop sign (along with speeding) and t-boned her on a country road. Guess what? The guy is pointing the finger at her and there were no other people around so no witness'. I have never been in that situation before so I don't know what's going to happen, I'm assuming she'll be going to court over this. If she had a dash cam, it would be an easy win for her.

You can find a cheap dash cam on Amazon for sub $100. The really nice ones are around $300 or so, still pretty cheap for what it does. The one I have is around $150, HD recording, starts automatically when the car turns on. Records in a 90 minute loop.

So if you don't have a dash cam in your vehicle, I HIGHLY recommend you invest in one ASAP.

EDIT: Man, this blew up overnight. I'll try and go through my inbox and respond. Been getting a lot of questions on how dash cams work and how to "wire" them. There is no "wiring" needed, you don't need to be a mechanic to do this. I know absolutely nothing about cars. All you do is take it out of the box, attach the camera to the mount that comes with it. Put the mount (suction cup) to your wind shield. Plug it into the lighter charger and you're done. It's really that simple. When you turn on the car it will start recording automatically. You don't need to touch it. It records on a 90 minute loop and stores 18 five minute videos on a SD card that comes with it. What if it gets stolen? Well, I live in a safe area so I never have to worry about that. If I lived in the city I would definitely take it off and store it in the glove box or out of sight somewhere

The dash cam that I have is the KD Links x1. So everything that I said is specific to that camera. I'd post the link here but people would probably get upset and accuse me of trying to make money. So just go to Amazon and look it up. It's a great camera and awesome customer service.

I only have the front. Better than nothing. Once I get more money I'll buy a rear as well.

Not concerned about theft because I live in a safe area. If I were back in the city I would take lock it away in the glove box when parked.

Be careful out there! Wife had a gun pulled on her in a road rage incident this morning. [R]

Oct. 12, 2016

Wife got home about an hour ago from the incident. She was driving on 380 (so not technically Dallas) towards Highway 75 near the Collin campus. A black Mercedes G-Wagon starts swerving in and out of traffic, cutting off cars, and basically being a monumental dick all around. Eventually, he gets up behind our small car and rides her bumper. She slows down to let him pass, which is clearly a sign of provocation on her part (/sarcasm). He then lays on his horn, pulls up beside her on the driver side, and points a handgun at her. She gets over a lane and puts an 18 wheeler between herself and the other driver. This prompts him to get in front of the truck and slam on his breaks in an attempt to get the truck to change lanes into her. Eventually, my wife is able to peel off from traffic and rush home.

Called McKinney PD and filed a report, but since she wasn't able to get the license plate (her efforts were on getting away from him) and because the cameras on their traffic lights don't record, they're just "There to assist the light controls", he's going to go about his day without a bit of repercussions.

After getting mugged in Irving a couple years back at my front door, it may be time to look into something else for us. Hell, another couple we're friends with were involved in a hit and run this morning as well. Combine a false sense of entitlement with an assumption of anonymity and it allows individuals to act in heinous ways.

I got a kdlinks X1 on the recommendation of /u/Obieousmaximus after he posted one of his dashcam videos in /r/Dallas. I like it. You can take it off the mount pretty easily and use it as a regular camera to take still pictures of an accident or whatnot. It also has a GPS that tracks your speed and location. The software it comes with uses google maps and shows where you were while playing back the video. Size wise it's a little bit smaller than a Canon Powershot A2500.

Here is what the video looks like through a dirty windshield in the middle of the day.

I can't figure out how to search cams by mount type. Obviously I know a GoPro will fit, but it doesn't make the best dashcam.

Obligatory - I just got the truck and have spent several hours on this subreddit. I love it so far. My dad bought his 2001 new 15 years ago, and I've been coveting it, until finally biting the bullet this last weekend. 2016 SR5 V6 4x4

I leave, and only afterwards do I learn it was not my fault at all, that I am a complete idiot, and that I should have called the cops immediately and gotten all of his information instead of being an apologetic wreck and being afraid to demand for his info because I thought I was somehow at fault.

tl;dr I am too naive to be an adult, please help me

Edit: This is my first post to get anywhere near over 100 up votes to my knowledge, so this is blowing me away a bit. Thank you all for your kindness and advice, I will take it to heart and make sure to keep my head level in a similar situation in the future!

Edit 2: I am not Canadian! I was born and bred in the southern US, currently residing in Louisiana :)

*For all wondering how bad the damage actually was, it turns out that I had panicked and thought the damage was much worse than it was. In the end I am just left with a gash where the paint is gone in my bumper, but beyond that it isn't broken or dented (like I thought it was). I am incredibly blessed that that was all it was! (For the record, though, my car is still worse for it than the other guy's!)

This one is a decent cam. Then what you do is get a portable battery, like this one. You plug the battery into the car adapter, then plug the dash cam to the portable battery. This way, you can get some footage after the car is turned off. When the engine is on, the car should charge the battery pack faster than the can drains it.

It's not pretty, put it does the job. No need to spend $800.

Budget dashcam [R]

Hey,

Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a low end dash cam? I've had the CDR-820 but 2 of them have given me recording issues. It simply doesn't record anything (even when the screens on!!) so I can't rely on it which defeats the whole point of a dash cam obviously. With hindsight looking around this appears to be a recurring issue with the model.

Anyone got one they can personally recommend?

3 years, 10 months agodeskmeetface posted on Dashcam.

Said it before so I'll say it again. Having a dash cam is like having insurance. You should purchase the best one you can afford. A video record of an incident could potentially save you thousands of dollars in repair and legal costs. Don't get caught finding out your "budget" dash cam didn't record when it was supposed to. (Source: Had a dash cam that saved me half a million USD in medical bills thanks to its video).

With that said, personally I use the KDLINKS X1 for about $170. It withstands the florida heat just fine and has never failed recording as of yet.

Waiting on Street Guardian to come out with their dual cam version. When that Happens I'll be snatching one up.

[GA] Hit by a driver who ran a red light. They are claiming they had the green. No witnesses. Am I screwed? [R]

4 years agoAbideMan posted submission on legaladvice.
March 16, 2016

I'm located in Georgia. Yesterday my car was totaled by a car who ran a red light going ~40mph as I was turning left from a highway off-ramp. The off-ramp is perpendicular to the direction in which the other driver was traveling - I was turning left to go east, while they were going straight westbound. Luckily there were no injuries - I was able to pull my car the direction of the impact so that it was not a direct T-bone. I was not distracted in my driving in any way, and was the last of a line of about 8 cars turning left. (It's a long green in the afternoon rush hour.) I even looked up at the light right after the accident and it was still green for me. No witnesses stopped. The other driver is claiming that they had the green light. I don't have a dash cam. (Yes, I realize I should have one and will absolutely purchase one for my new car. This could be an expensive lesson learned.) The police came and I have the report number, but since we had no witnesses and conflicting accounts, gave us both citations for running the red and told us to go to court.

I understand it's I-said vs. you-said, but I KNOW that my light was green. I was coming from a stop, following other cars, and I verified it right after the crash. If I had run the light late, the other driver would have been coming from a stop, and not 40mph. There were two cars stopped at the intersection where the other driver came from right after the crash (because the light was red, though of course I can't prove it).

I understand now that the insurance companies will investigate and I also have to go to court for the citation. My questions are:
1. How does the court decision affect insurance's decision? What if the other driver pleads nolo?
2. Will my eyewitness testimony be considered by the judge? What if neither of us back down? Will the judge just give us both "Guilty" decisions?
3. Will having a lawyer increase my odds of getting a "Not Guilty" decision from the judge?
4. This is more local, but I believe there is a camera mounted at the intersection. How would I go about finding who it belongs to and how to access that footage? What about businesses in the area?

Thanks in advance for any help!

EDIT: Two details that are pure conjecture but worth noting IMO:
1. I believe the other driver was on their phone. They didn't honk, swerve, or brake at all before impact. I was turning at approximately 20mph and given the fact that the road is straight, I would have expected them to take some evasive action.
2. There are two lights within about 150yds of each other on this road. If the driver was driving distracted, I could see how they would only see the first green and miss the second red. I looked today and just after the off-ramp had a green, the first light was green, but the second was red.

I slam my breaks on hard and narrowly missed hitting the back of the car where the kids were.

Now I absolutely beeped the crap out of her and stopped. She stopped as well and came guns blazing saying that I almost hit her car and that it was my fault. At that point I just told her she was a fucking idiot and that she was meant to give way to me. Her excuse was that she was late to get her kids to school.

Now the best part was that there was a cop behind me. He came to my defense and fined her.

Is it me or is she stupid?

Hello awesome peeps!

So I had a close call with a Mombie this morning. So I'm driving on the street doing the speed limit. Now the Mombie comes up to the street but doesn't look to see if she was free to turn out. She just pulled out cause she could.

Guy with dashcam is pulled over. First cop says the reason is he was "driving in circles". Then the other drops the infamous "using a turn signal within 100 feet of a turn" line as the PC for the stop. [R]

My KDLinks Dash cam has the GPS function that records my speed as well (http://www.amazon.com/KDLINKS%C2%AE-X1-Dashboard-Camcorder-G-Sensor/dp/B00N8BM0BU/ref=sr11?s=car&ie=UTF8&qid=1436888122&sr=1-1&keywords=dash+cam&pebp=1436888136578&perid=096DQ1J33EPD95GG0HH3)

However I disabled that function since I am usually going some speed faster than the limit =/

[Discussion] I am probably late to the party, but does anyone else consider the new camera review rule blantantly unfair? [R]

I must be bored.. I am not sure why you think I am on tumblr... lol, I am guessing you spend a lot of time on there... getting a dashcam is a completely wrong analogy as well. The unfairness of the camera rule comes from the greed of the TOs not wanting to put non-pros on camera. Whereas the unfairness in the (strange) dashcam analogy you used stems from an individuals apathy towards getting one. Everyone can afford a dashcam... they aren't super, prohibitively expensive. http://www.amazon.com/KDLINKS%C2%AE-X1-Dashboard-Camcorder-G-Sensor/dp/B00N8BM0BU/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1436564457&sr=8-1&keywords=dash+cam . If you're really equating MTG to life saying, "it's not fair, get over it." Then why even have a DCI? The DCI is there to make sure that only some combination of skill and luck prevail and that no one has an unfair advantage...

Oh my god I JUST BOUGHT ONE!

Did a little research and ended up with this:

Quality is really outstanding. In hindsight I wish I could find one that had a really big battery so I could just charge it instead of having to leave it plugged in. Suggestions welcome.

Dashcams aren't expensive. You can get an extremely nice wide-angle HD dash cam for 170 bucks now, and that includes GPS and nightvision.

Granted you'll have to install 50-100 for a typical county, but that's a lot of value for the price.

Really, it's just a matter of time for most communities. I'm very surprised many police cars haven't been updated with better equip at this price.

Dash cams are you using one??? [R]
