[Contest] Whooo Wants a Hootie? [R]5 years, 7 months agoSept. 18, 2014
Mailed September 29th
What is a Hootie? Here are some examples of Hooties I have previously made.
This contest is for a cross stitched Hootie done by me. I would make the Hootie and mail it to you when I am finished. I would get the Hootie out to you about a week after the contest ends (need time to make the Hootie).
Comment: Please put the Reddit Raffle. You don't need to specify what Hootie you want at this time.
Reddit Raffle:Wait till you hear about my day. It was a hoot!
Prize Hootie of your choice. I will do customizing if asked nicely :P
Ends: September 24th at 9pm central
Note - Must be okay with giving me your address as I will mail the finished Hootie to you.
I have done a few Hooties on RAoA before and they seem to be pretty popular. Depending on how this contest goes I may make these a weekly thing.
Feel free to ask any questions or make comments :)

It all depends on how I'm feeling and what is on Netflix to how fast I go :P Sometimes I can get a Hootie out in closer to 4 hours, it all just depends.
If you want to get back into cross stitch I would say start small. Don't get into something too big or too detailed. You may get frustrated easily. I would go with a cross stitch kit that has the fabric, thread, needle, and hoop. That way if you don't have the supplies it comes with everything you need but scissors. Dimensions has some good kits
Those small kits like that and the Hooties are what I like to call smalls. If I am working on a big project - like when I did Precious Moments Hope - every so often I would take a break and do a small project. It helped keep me sane :P So if you ever take on a big project maybe do a couple small ones inbetween so you don't get burnt out.
Kinda dorky, but here is our "family portrait" I made. [R]5 years, 9 months agoRhapsodyQ posted submission on somethingimade.

I had a few people ask for some pointers to get started, so here they are:
I found a few step by step tutorials that are great for listing everything you need and the basics of a stitch:
The only things I would add are:
I usually knot my thread before I put it in the cloth, but that's partly because i don't care too much about how it turns out on the back. A lot of avid cross stitchers are very serious about keeping the back of the cloth just as neat and tidy as the front, and not knotting the thread before you begin can help with that.
Use masking tape around the edges to keep them from fraying
- Do not underestimate the usefullness of a hoop! Especially for bigger projects
- Definitely make all your X's in the same direction. The finished picture will look much more polished.
- When you finish everything in a pattern, it may or may not tell you to backstitch around parts to clean up the edges. This is basically means you make an outline around the shape or figures (think black lines in a coloring book). If you used 3 strands of floss for the main pattern, I would use one less for the back stitch.
Your best bet is either finding a small free pattern online, or going to a craft store like Joann's and getting a kit. The patterns in the kits will give you everything you need. The pattern will be in black and white and each square will have a symbol that represents a certain color (either a specific color that came in the kit or the number of the color floss, which will most likely be DMC).
A few easy patterns I found:
If anyone gets started and has more questions I'd be happy to help. Have fun!

Been looking for a new hobby to get into and I have been lurking on this subreddit. Just wondering how do I start? Are there starter kits I can buy in a store or on amazon that someone can recommend?

This was the first cross stitch I did. It's a complete kit, the directions are easy to follow, and you'll have a finished project in just a day or two. Then I started getting all my tools separately and buying patterns on Etsy. Super simple hobby to get into!

So it's really quite cold and now is a good time to start or work on projects/crafts. So what are you working on?

I find it sooo relaxing so far, but this is only my second cross stitching project so who knows if I can keep it up lol
Right now my project is half finished, but here is a pic of where I bought it on amazon Blue Robot I'm partial to it's red heart : )
It doesn't look too much like Wall- E, but I really want to find a pattern featuring Wall-E and EVE now..
