WIFI Driver keeps uninstalling it's self. [R]

8 months, 2 weeks agozachhanson94 posted submission on techsupport.
July 17, 2019

So basically I got a new laptop, and I've been having this issue in which my Wireless intel adapter is basically uninstalling itself on a regular basis. I've tried...

  • Reset the laptop with my files kept.
  • Resetting with nothing kept at all and reinstalling Windows.
  • All drivers are up to date.
  • Command prompt as an admin to ping the WiFi and check if that is fine, which it is. Also used command prompt to reset things like my firewalls to make sure it wasn't a class of programs.
  • I've unticked the power saving option for the WiFi Driver, Tried the network reset as well.
  • Deleting the network driver and all its files and such and resetting the laptop to reinstall it.

The longest I've managed to go using this laptop without losing my WiFi connection is about an hour. It will disconnect doing anything, from just browsing the internet to gaming. It's driving me mad. I have to just go to the device manager and scan for hardware changes to get the driver back some times. Failing that, it'll sometimes scan for hardware changes, freeze my entire laptop and then give me the blue screen of death before restarting.

None of the suggested things I can find on the internet of people reporting the same issues are working for me. The last resort I have is plugging an Ethernet cable from my WiFi box to my laptop.

HOWEVER, My laptop doesn't have an Ethernet port. Is there anything like a device that would allow a USB port to be used as a sort of adaptor to accept an Ethernet cable or is this laptop as good as useless?

Many thanks for any help you guys could provide, it's driving me nuts!

My ethernet adapter needs to be reset like 5 times a day, by restarting my computer. Yes yes yes all my drivers are updated.

Is this a physical part I can replace or what?

My internet goes out and the error message says "ethernet cable not connected" when it definitely is, the cable is bran new.

or some other error message related to the ethernet adapter.

The offbrands are just as good, you don't need USB 3.0 speeds on a Switch. Just gonna link a $10 one here for others for posterity, although I agree with you: it's clearly an oversight out of cost or sloth so it sucks the consumers have to shell out for even more accessories.

Our internet modem stopped working suddenly after 8 years (probably time for an upgrade anyway). We called our ISP and they suggested getting a new modem.

Our new modem ( d-link, DSL-2888A) won't work. We tried to configure it but couldnt remember our username and password provided by our ISP. we rang them, got the correct details. Rang d-link, configured it, but it keeps saying secured, no internet.

Our ISP is stumped and so are we. Has anyone had this issue or know how to fix it. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated

Sorry if what I said doesn't make sense, I'm not amazing with this stuff lol

i just got a formuler z7+ but it keeps buffering on all channels. sometimes every other minute and other times about every 3-5 minutes like clockwork. video pauses, i get the spinning wheel then it starts playing again.

i tested mag box, no buffering, dreamlink t2 also no buffering. i thought the formuler box was better and should have no buffering due to extra ram.

searching online i find old threads from earlier this year about the same issues, but i dont see any recent ones with the same issue.

any suggestions?

I ended up ordering this one a few hours ago: Doesn't say it in the description but in the Amazon Q&A section the manufacturer says that it does have the RTL8153 chipset. The one I ordered is USB2.0 so technically it should be more than enough for what my service speed is anyways if it can even touch it? (400Mbps) If not, but if there is an improvement, then I will probably go ahead and order that one.

I need help with cable management [R]

I know this post is against rule number two but all the other subreddits will not respond

Alright, I need help with a problem that I'm having. This is more of a question of how to set up a battle station than it is to build a computer.

I currently have a setup where my computer is about 10 feet away in a closet (because of heat issues). I started off with four peripherals that need USB connection to the computer so I ordered a hub on Amazon and only added one extension cable to connect it to the computer. The problem with that solution is that all the peripherals would cut out every 90 minutes or so (my guess is because of a lack of power even though I used the power adapter included).

I now have four male to female 10 ft USB cables and these cables work relatively well without any connection issues. Now I know of a better spot for my computer but it is 50 feet away. I plan on buying two of this cable and this hub.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if I want to do this successfully, will I need to purchase eight of the previously mentioned cables or do you think that perhaps the hub I had before was inadequate. Oh and another thing, I don't think HDMI will not be a problem because it doesn't have as many signal losses as USB does but I could be wrong about that.

Thanks, I appreciate any response.

I need to get my laptop ethernet port fixed. Not really sure what is wrong with it but apparently it needs to get fixed :/.

Back where I'm from, I'd just go to a laptop repair shop or the manufacturer and get it fixed in a few hours or a few days tops. Would that be the same case here or would it take ages and cost a lot? Is it better to just get an entirely new laptop?

Thanks in advance!!

Need help! My previous post here made my problem confusing.. My actual problem is that my USB ports in my laptop are broken, and someone said that I have a low chance if I had to replace them. Someone suggested for me to buy a RJ45 to USB Port converter. But I don't know how to use it.

Is there any way so I could use it as a USB port.

2 years, 4 months agoSoCo_cpp posted comment on techsupport.
Nov. 13, 2017

This thing isn't going to work. You don't just need and adapter, you need an active converter.

Really, they aren't that expensive, nor do they look very different. You need a "USB Ethernet Adapter".

Here's an example:

Why is what you have wrong? Because it is a direct conversion from USB to RJ45 (the Ethernet cable connector). It has the same connector, but skips doing the whole Ethernet part. It may be used for odd serial data transfers, like fancy serial com port tricks.

What do you carry in your tech bag and do you actually use it? [R]

Hello redditors I have been in a rut all day with a issue with my network settings with my desktop (custom built) I was getting the issue where my network said connected but when i tried to use the internet (i.e. chrome, steam, league of legends) I could not connect. A issue that I thought it would be was earlier this morning my houses power went out my computer was off at the time but I read that a surge can still happen and maybe short circuit my Ethernet port. I have tried many different options such as 1. Restarting Modem 2. Uninstalling and Reinstalling Network Drivers 3. Ipconfig release and reset 4. netsh winsock reset 5. Flushing DNS 6. updating BIOS 7. Reinstalling windows I also contacted my motherboard's Manufacturer (MSI, Motherboard is a 970A-g46) they tried to help me by checking in my system config services for errors in processes, they said a few that had to be running were stopped. Which were Wired AutoConfig and Network Connections. I then started windows in safemode with network enabled and still no help I then prompted to reinstall windows from the recovery mode encase of a virus and still no luck. I am now at "Network No Internet" with a error symbol over the connection symbol. I am currently installing ubuntu on my desktop to see if it is a OS issue. (some screen caps from some system info)

You don't have to install Ubuntu, you can usually create a live DVD and boot from that and see if it is able to use your network card.

When you connect the network cable to the PC do any lights turn on to show network traffic like this? Or there are no visible lights present?

Also I would advising keeping a USB to Ethernet adapter, just for situations like this.

Switch between two internet connections on my PC? [R]

I have a wireless (4g-LTE) router that offers me high speed internet that I connect to my PC via Ethernet.

I want to get a second connection (different ISP and router) that's going to be DSL landline to use for gaming (Low speed but consistent ping). This will also be connected via Ethernet to my PC.

Is there a way I can have both Ethernet cables from each router connected to my PC and switch between them (via windows/software) whenever I want to game vs browse the internet?

Basically the same functionality as physically unplugging/plugging to switch between the Ethernet cables.

Both routers support wifi, but I like using Ethernet.

Wanted to get everyones opinion on this MOBO with my build to see if it would work. I took measurements and it should just barely fit in my tower. I'm not 100% sure that my Graphics card will cover the other 2 PCI 1 slots thought. Hoping it doesn't so I can add both a wifi and LAN card.

2-in-1 with Ethernet Port [R]

April 24, 2017

So I work in computer networking and am looking around for a 2-in-1 laptop that I can take notes on during meetings and what not but I am having a difficult time finding anything with an Ethernet port. I thought id ask this community for help because most retail websites can be vague on the details and I hope to find something that I am not already aware of.

2-1 laptop stylus (may have to be purchased separately?) SSD (preferably over 256gb) i7 proc (im pretty flexible on the processors) ddr4 16gb ram 1080p display touch screen webcam HDMI port bluetooth 15 in screen or more

I kinda want something sturdy feeling. Battery life isn't really important and neither is the weight. I am pretty flexible on most details. I spend ALOT of time on my laptop and just want something powerful for running intensive networking software and virtual machines. I can turn into a tablet for note taking when meeting with clients. Plug into computer networks for troubleshooting. I watch a lot of you tube so clear speakers and display are important features also.

Hello everybody!

Welcome to the Daily Question Thread! In this thread, all of your Switch-related questions can be asked and answered. Besides questions, feel free to post unboxing videos and pictures here (eventually) so it doesn't back up the main subreddit page.

Please make sure you check out our other Wiki pages, make a search through the subreddit or Google before you ask a question. Most of the time it has already been answered. If you're too lazy, then this thread is perfect for you!

You may also get an answer more quickly by asking in the #switch-help channel of our Discord server.

Handy Resources

Frequently Asked Questions - This is a great place to check first hand if you run into any problems or if you have any unclear thoughts. Our FAQ has answers to many questions regarding the console itself, controllers, and other subjects. We're also updating our wiki with the top questions from this thread each week!

Games list for Nintendo Switch - In this page, you will find tables of confirmed, planned, uncertain, and rumored games coming to the Switch.

Other Switch Related Subreddits

Since it's not completely obvious as to what questions you should ask and which ones you shouldn't, here are a few examples of frequently asked questions:

Is now the time to buy a Switch?

Which games can you recommend me?

What features does the Switch have?

What controllers work with this game?

If your questions can be easily answered, or has a yes or no answer, it most likely belongs here. Now then, get busy asking us your questions!

There's also a very small category of things not to ask about.

Can I get a free game?

Have you check the router where it is plugged in to? Depending on how you route cords through your house you may have unplugged it from the router. Or you jacked the cord itself up, I doubt you broke the port itself in my experience the little clip on the Ethernet cord breaks before the port does but anything is possible. If you did break the port there are several USB to Ethernet adapters and you can always get a WiFi dongle.

I don't have any personal experience with them. My XPS 14 has a dedicated RJ45 jack (shame that they got rid of that model and also that the 15 doesn't retain the port). Linus from LTT mentioned needing one in one of his Razer Blade reviews, and if I go to QuakeCon this year, I'll need to pick one up for my Razer Blade as well.

This one should work for you and it has 4+ stars from 700+ ratings, for $10.

Order this:

And if you don't have it, any ethernet cable.

Plug in the power cable to the female MicroUSB port on the splitter. Plug the microusb cable part of the splitter into the Chromecast. Plug the Ethernet to USB converter into the USb port on the splitter. Plug in both sides of the ethernet cable. Give it a minute. It should find the connection.

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
  • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 970. Which one should I get?
  • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that IRC is a great place to ask quick questions as well:

So you need an ethernet to usb adapter? Something like this?

Or are you talking about a wifi dongle you can plug into the usb port and connect wirelessly? Maybe something like this?

Wi-fi always work, ethernet only sometimes [R]

I have an odd issue with my computer (windows 10). It has no problem connecting to my router via wi-fi but can't connect to it via ethernet (it acts as if no cable was inserted at all (tried three cables)). I have tried to update my network drivers, unistalling and re-installing but nothing works.

The weirdest part is that sometimes when I play online games (Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, League of Legends) it detects and connects via the ethernet. Once connection has been made it is perfectly stable but resets after a reboot, only allowing connection via wi-fi again.

Could someone help me solve this? I wish to be connected via the ethernet at all times, not just when the computer feels like it.

It could be a faulty NIC card. If you have 10$ to spare, you can buy one of these to test it. It's a ethernet to USB converter that runs on a virtual NIC card. If that works, then it's probably your NIC card.

College residence only has an ethernet cable and I've been told I can't connect a router to it. Is there any way to get wifi from this? [R]

I've been told that if I connect a router to the ethernet cable, the entire system will shut down because of the way the internet is wired across the building. However, they also told me that I can make my laptop a wifi hotspot using it. In order to do this though, I'd have to buy an adapter for my laptop (it doesn't have an ethernet port). Is there any other solution to getting wireless internet that doesn't involve using my laptop as a hotspot?

Has anybody had this issue and or has a fix?

That helps a lot. It is definitely your computer, and not an issue with your router, modem, or ISP.

Does your computer have a wired port? Try plugging that in and turn off your WiFi just as a temporary test. If you don't have a wired port, buy a USB to Ethernet adapter for testing. There are decent ones for $10 on Amazon if you live in the US.

If you don't have issues when connected on a wired port, then it isn't a software problem and your WiFi card is probably dying or getting too hot. If you do have issues on a wired connection, let me know and we can look into a few things on the software side.

  • Bios is up to date
  • Drivers are up to date ( I believe )
  • Windows 10 64 bit
  • Motherboard is SLI Krait Edition
  • 16 gb of ram

Yesterday my internet was working fine but when I woke my computer up from sleep mode there was a red cross over my internet icon on the task bar and I can't connect to the internet.

When opening network sharing center and going to "change adapter settings" the error I receive is that there is no Ethernet port connected although the cable is clearly connected.

I tested the cable on a loopback by plugging both ends into the router, both lights lit up.

I tested the cable on another computer the cable worked.

I tested another cable, did not work.

Disabled and re-enabled the drivers, did not work.

Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, did not work.

There are no lights on the router when I plug the cable into the computer.

I know, I know. This question again. Ive been reading up, but most I can see is random disconnects and stuff like that. The best way I can explain it is that my online matches take about 1-7 seconds to take any input that I give (witch is a lot of time in a fast paced game). And that I have no problem with joining or staying in a match. Im using a couple basic input devices, coupling between the Gamepad and a HORI Gamecube controller plugged into my wii remote. Neither of these have given me any problems on LAN or single player. Im playing on a Asus 144Hz 1ms gaming monitor, so it cant be that. If anybody has something that can help me out, or of this question is downright disallowed at this point. Let me know. Thank you very much for any help. Note: Im using the on-board WIFI on the Wiiu and getting about 35D/7U on a speedtest on my adjacent PC.

This may sound crazy, but might work.

Get a USB to ethernet adapter and plug that into your PC. This will make a second available Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection available to your PC, and not disturb your current (work) one.

Then get or make an ethernet crossover cable.

If you plug the crossover cable between the Pi and the USB adapter in your PC, the PC and Pi should technically be existing on their own 1 on 1 network.

I think that should work at least.

Okay so recently my mother has had her Ethernet port die on a ancient PC, and it basically doesn't support anything, so it ain't going to get fixed, so we agreed that I would draw up a replacement PCs (I took the time to make a couple of selections.)... Then the few days later she did a 180, and isn't going to do it now! I wouldn't mine this if she then say that she would just use my PC, so put simply she is making her issue my issue and doesn't see the issue with that... And we wouldn't be here if she took care of her electronics! Sorry for the rant, but this really pisses me off.

[ADVICE] First time setting up an ISP and purchasing a router [R]

4 years, 9 months agoJuly 1, 2015

Hey, all It's my first time dabbling in the field of networking and wireless internet, and I'm clueless. I've done tons of reading and asked plenty for advice, but I still can't seem to come to a conclusion of what type of router I want to buy. Let me give you a little background on how the router will be used;

-I have 2 smart phones, 2 laptops (one Windows, one Mac) and a PS4 that will be on the connection (PS4 will probably be connected via ethernet.)

-I'm going through Charter Internet, which offers a free modem upon signing and offers 60Mbps.

-The apartment is 800 sq./ft.

-I'd like to spend no more than $100.

I have been recommended the Archer C7 AC1750 by TP-Link, and I'm also debating whether or not I should go for the Apple Airport Express (that's what my roommate has now, and it's treated us pretty well, but I'm moving out next week.)

I'm also concerned as to how I would set up a connection without a computer that supports ethernet connectivity? I mean, I could use my soon-to-be roommates Windows, but how could I connect with a Mac that doesn't support Ethernet?

If you have any advice, or recommendations as to what router I should buy, it would be much appreciated. Also, what's your opinion on the C7? I'm seeing really great reviews, and then really bad reviews.

I've got a TP-Link Archer A7 and am very happy with it and it's abilities as a power-user. I'm also glad I have the option for DD-WRT at this price point and feature set.

I'd suggest using a cheap usb-ethernet adapter sold on amazon for connecting to the router from your mac physically for setup.

OS X can create a wireless hotspot from a wired internet connection by default without any special utilities:

If you don't have a ethernet port you could simply get a USB adapter for under $10

Windows can also do it without special software by bridging the connections and setting up wireless in Ad-hoc mode though I have not done it since windows XP.

How do I figure out what is wrong here if I don't have another monitor to test the cable with?

  1. HDMI output on laptop could not be working.

  2. HDMI-to-DisplayLink adapter could not be working.

  3. Monitor (Dell P2014H) input may not be working.

  4. Or do I just need a DisplayLink driver or similar? Everything is plugged in, but there's no indication that Windows can recognize the external display.

Just installed the DisplayLink driver from their website, restarted, no change, still cannot detect external monitor.

Reference: 2013 Razer Blad 14" only has USB and HDMI ports, no DisplayLink or other ports. Dell P2014H monitor does not have HDMI port, and does not transmit anything over its USB connection to the computer (that I can tell) - the latter apparently just serves as a USB hub.

So, what do?

You just drop a few of these on the Ainol mini PC that has a USB 3.0 port. so with a USB 3.0 hub you should have the bandwidth to run 3 ethernet ports.

Does any Ethernet-USB adapter work with the Wii U? [R]

I'm looking to buy one, but when I use the keyword "wii u" on amazon or ebay, i get prices around £10 and £5 respectively. But without the phrase I've found this one, for £1.50/60 on both amazon and ebay.

Anyone know if these cheap ones still work?

I imagine drivers are needed inorder to work things like these, but I can see why these cheaper ones might now work with a Wii U.

4 years, 11 months agoungenesis posted on nintendo.
April 13, 2015

It IS true that you don't need an 'official' Nintendo adapter, but not all adapters are created equal. I had a bunch of these lying around and can confirm that they do NOT work. I didn't try any others because I found a good deal on a used first party adapter.

If shopping on Amazon, your best bet is to check the questions/answers section, as I have seen several that state they DO work with the Wii U.

Hope this helps, and good luck in your search!

Should I attach my usb hard drive to my router or my nexus player? [R]

5 years agoProperNorf posted submission on nexusplayer.
March 25, 2015

My nexus player arrives in about a week and I'm excited to set it up. I have an external usb hard drive with all my media on it, and I'm not sure what the best set up is.

Currently I have 2 WDTVs hard wired ethernet to a router which has my usb hard drive attached to it containing all my media files. The WDTVs are starting to show their age so I've upgraded one of them to the nexus player.

Should I keep the usb hard drive attached to the router when my np arrives? I know I can access my media through kodi this way, and also through ES File Explorer/VLC, but the AC WIFI has me a bit concerned about reliability.

If I go the other way and attach the hard drive directly to my nexus player, can I share out my hard drive to the other WDTV player, either via smb or DLNA? WIFI is a concern again, but the majority of my media watching will be through the NP.

Finally is there any way to directly mount a smb share on the NP so I can play the files through VLC without having to browse ES File Explorer?

Keep it connected to your router much easier to setup and you can share media through different devices. I store my media on NAS device and managing it through /r/PleX media server. Works extremely well and does all the transcoding. The NP though is connected through [Ethernet Network Adapter] ( and [4-Port USB 2.0 Hub] ( just make sure its 2.0 usb dont know why but 3.0 wont work.
