I have the same tank. I used the cartridge for the first month and then started adding polishing fiber filter in the space where the pump is, left of the cartridge. Then, once my cycle was established, I tossed the cartridge and started using various other sponges and Matrix in the chamber.

Sponge - cut to fit

Filter Fiber - polishes water by capturing little particles

Matrix - porous stones - put in a media bag if you want

Lava Rock as rock rubble alternative in fuge. [R]

I'm planning on making a diy hang on back fuge with an aqua clear 70 but I need some form of rock rubble. I have some lava rock(the small ones not the boulders) and I was wondering if that would work as a live rock rubble. Thoughts?

I see. In that case, sponge works better. My pods love living in a piece of this I keep in my sump. The holes are perfect for them to live and reproduce in.

Hows about you cycle with fish out. Fish in is kinda cruel. Yes I'd put a small sponge over the intake so you don't suck up lil' baby shrimp. Buy a big one and chop it to size, that'll save you money. I love tetras, so that'll be my choice.Hows about you go to /r/aquariums for more help.
