UD Titanium Wire - be f*ing careful! [R]

3 years, 11 months agobertcakes posted submission on electronic_cigarette.
April 5, 2016

Yesterday my GF brought home some spools of wire from our local B&M because we've been short on them. She bought two spools of 26g and 28g Titanium wire from UD.

When she got home, I immediatly starting building since my current build was already way beyond it's time. Anyway.

I took the 28g spool, rolled off a piece of wire and started coiling it - until i noticed black streaks on ym fingers. I took a closer look at the wire and it's been literally covered all over in black, sticky residue.

I then took an alcohol cleaning swab and tried to clean the wire... And I've been in shock on how freaking dirty that thing was! The swab immediatly turned black wherever it touched the wire. To clean a piece of approx. 30cm I needed 8 complete swabs to get all the residue off of it. I've never seen anything like this before, never. I had some dirty wire before, happened once or twice but not even close to this. Back then I was able to clean the wire by going over it 2 times with an alcohol swab and it's been clean after that.

Well, not yesterday.

The other spool was fine, no dirt on there. But, man, that 28g was a f*ing bloody mess. Until now, I'm still hesitating on using my current build because of how dirty it was, even though I cleaned it thoroughly until the last swab didn't collect any more dirt and stayed white. It should be clean now, but, oh boy...

Just wanted to share. I'm going to change my workflow on coiling, from now on I'm going to clean every piece of wire before using it, regardless if it's dirty or not and regardless if it's leaving streaks on my fingers when building or not. Until yesterday I only cleaned the wires when they left streaks on ym fingers or when they were clearly dirty - which didn't happen very often. Almost like never, to be honest. Well, from now on... You get it.

Anyway, keep an eye out on UD's Ti-wire. Don't know if this only occurs with the TI-wire or if this is a general issue or maybe that one spool just didn't get cleaned in the factory after manufacturing (which I'm quite sure is a standard procedure).

Vape on - and vape safe (and clean).

Not as cheap as fasttech, but I've been using this for a couple weeks and it's clean. Plus, if you have Prime it takes a couple days, not months. 26g is just right for me.

Hello everyone I'm currently waiting patiently for my mods and rda to come in. I currently have a kangertech kbox 200, a evic mini, and a velocity clone on their way in the mail. I do HAVE A uwell crown in my room awaiting it's fellow mods for first time use. I've been "vaping" for almost a year from V2 series 3 vape pen and have decided to take the next step and dive into the deep end of vaping. I have purchased the intellix i4 charger as well as 2 authentic lg hg2 and was curious of everyone's thought on my setups. I have my crown primed with the .5 coil and been sitting with a full tank for 2 days now. I was curious as to everyone's personal preference for flavor builds with the velocity clone or uwell crown. I also have 28g kanthal wire, organic cotton, and a coil jig on the way and want to purchase an ohms meter to start making my own coils. Any advice and insight is much appreciated. Sorry for having you read my short essay but am excited to finally be diving in! Much love -Project_Mays

I ordered mine from an eBay seller that has since sold out. origin Vape has the UD branded wire in stock. They are a reputable site but there are probably better deals out there. Many people use the Beadalon brand sold at craft stores.

I got a free sample of some 26 gauge 317L stainless steel with purchase of some titanium and figured id give it a try. Put two quick 8 wrap coils on my velocity RDA and gave it a try at 410 Degrees and 55W (.31 Ohms) and all I can say is wow. I have been trying to work with clapton wire the last few days and this stainless steel blows it out of the water not only on vapor but on flavor. What grade stainless steel would you guys suggest I buy more of? I am running a VTC Mini with a custom TCR right now and am completely amazed. Thanks!

So my 100ft of 26g and 22g wire arrived today. I have a shallow cardboard box that would fit both spools. Then I poked holes in the box to feed the wire. The 26g was no problem at all.

I open the 22g and place it in the box. It immediately begins spinning at what looks like super sonic speed. I'm surprised the cardboard box didn't catch fire.

About 65% of the wire unspooled. I thought to myself it would be a good idea to just unspool it all and rewrap it. LOL!

So there I was covered in 22g wire. I don't know if you've seen the movie Saw, but I imagine I looked like the one dude trying to climb through the unraveled barbed wire.

I managed to get most of it rolled up again, and now I have a nice pair of 22g coils in my Velocity clone. So there's that!

I am so impressed!

Once I figured out what Wattage and temps to use, it worked like a charm. The coil lasts longer, the hits are cleaner and more consistent, and the FLAVOR is so nice compared to kanthal on regular power mode.

I am super impressed and happy I tried it. Can't imagine not using it this way now.

SS 317L for Temperature...Where can I buy some? [R]

Hey guys! So I have been used to using Ni200 for my temperature control builds, but I've been reading and seeing videos where stainless steel seems to be giving off the better vape. So I'm wondering...where is everyone getting their 317L? I really would love a source here in the USA, and if someone could please provide a link as well that would be great (26-24g please because the atty I want to use it in can only go as thick as 24g).

So, the idea of Temperature Control is awesome, sure.

But the wire we need to use (Nickel, Titanium) is super-low resistance, you have to use annoying-ly high gauge wire, and large coils, and space the coils properly... and because you are using such thin wire, the heat flux of the wire itself is off the charts at higher wattages, so it's not a pleasant vape at high wattages.

Enter SS316l, aka Stainless Steel wire. Has the benefits of being easy to work with, not super-low resistance (I use 24AWG SS316l, from UD), AND changes resistance with increase in temp, so it can be used with TC mods to prevent dry-hits.

Before now, if you wanted to use SS wire in TC mode, you had to use a DNA200 device, and enter a custom temperature curve/graph/thingo.

Until now

Upgraded my Smok X Cube II ($90AUD / $60USD) so it now has the SS temp-control option (paid for the upgrade, just to see how it works. 99c for the SS TC upgrade).

Threw on my BAAL V2 (El Diablo Philippines) with it's 8-wrap, 2.5mm ID, 24awg SS316 @ 0.2ohm- a build I have been using on my iPV D2, minimum 0.2ohm in power mode is slightly annoying- normally I would be vaping at 0.15ohm on a mech.

Set the temp to 420f, and fired it. HISS HISS HISS HISS temp protect..... sweet.

Tried a dry-cotton test- passed with flying colours. Set the temp to 500f, and held the button down. HISS HISS HISS temp protect....(coil cools down).... HISS HISS HISS temp protect... sweet!

So, I ask- why are we putting so much time and effort into figuring out TC over Kanthal, when SS wire seems to work perfectly in TC mode, and has none of the downfalls of common "TC-wire" (and I personally believe it vapes better than Kanthal)?

I mean, hell, I just threw my favourite mech-build-coil on the Smok, and BOOM, mech performance, now with TC!

Trial and Error, a learning process [R]

4 years, 7 months agoTo0nMaN posted submission on electronic_cigarette.
Aug. 12, 2015

So, I hardly EVER post here, because I never have anything interesting to say.

Here's something I think most can agree with, and I hope some of our newbies see it.

I've been vaping for a couple years. I started on an ego pen, with a nameless bottom feeder blah tank. I liked it. But it left a lot to be desired.

I upgraded to my first dripper. No idea what it's called, sold by an irresponsible B&M. That aside, I had my first Mech, a Smok Magneto v1. I still have, use, and like it, though I've gotten better drippers. This was when silica wick was still the ideal.

Now, I used my vape only when smoking wasn't an option. But I still very predominantly smoked. I prefered it.

Fast forward maybe a year. I stop by a new B&M in a new area, after I moved. Sold me a Sparta 2 mech (retired) and an Omega clone (also retired). I dabbled, couldn't get it to work, now wicking with cotton.

I found this sub right about then, and here, I learned all I know. Everything. You guys are the best. Seriously. Thank you.

Fast forward another year to today. I'm using a Sigelei 150w, with a Mutation X v4. l LOVE IT.

But I was still a little... ambitious. I was convinced the lowest possible ohm build was the correct way for me.

Well I've been having an issue with my coils burning evenly, and I ran out of my 24g kanthal for my 5mm core, dual parallel coils I loved so much.

So I resorted to my 26g, and built dual 3mm parallels, 10 wraps, for surface area.

I WAS SO WRONG. At .3 ohms, my clouds are BIGGER than my .1 ohm build! Flavor is better too!!

It all goes to show, vaping is a true hobby. There is so "right way". Keep your battery safety in mind, and ohms law, and experiment!! You'll never know what new build you'll find you like more than your go to build, unless you experiment.

Its all a learning process and there's ALWAYS something new to learn.

So thank you guys. You taught me everything I know, and I'm continuing to learn, and I'm getting better with every build. Truly. Thank you all so much.

Next time you buy some wire grab some 316L 26g, lower resistance/foot so it require a couple more wraps which means more flavor and bigger clouds.

Running sigelei 100 and a subtank mini right now. The stock coild in the subtank are 0.5ohm and it gets a bit dirty over 25.

I've just started to use the RBA and building my own - but using pretty basic designs with 0.4-0.5mm kanthol and haven't got one below 0.4ohm

Do I just do less coils? lower gauge wire? what kind of resistance should i be aiming for? and what do dual coil offer that singles dont?
Or do I need a different tank?

I guess the better question is - am I missing out by not utilising the mod to anywhere near its max potential? I'm getting a pretty nice vape off the stock coils

True, I have been considering getting one of these as I've always wanted a Zero since Carlos first made them, but I refuse to pay that kind of money for something like that. If that geeco board performs as well as everyone says, and with 60w for temp control it should be awesome.

In regards to the nickel purity settings, do you know if that is just a temperature coefficient setting, or something else? If it's the coefficient setting, then SS or Titanium wire should work fine (I'd avoid gplat, it's overpriced/overhyped rebranded wire as most of them are).

You should snag a roll of SS wire like these (I've used them and they work well) and see if you can get it to work. =)

It's just overpriced 316L SS wire. Works fine, but any branded specifically for vaping is going to be at a lovely markup. Same thing applies to any boutique wire sold for vaping.

If you're interested in trying some out, just pick up some Beadalon 316L SS wire off Amazon. It's pure SS without any coatings or anything else, so it's identical to the overpriced vape-branded wires. I'll link to a couple listings here so you know what to look for:

Since it gets used for wire wrapping art, they also sell a couple interesting other wire shapes, like square wire and half-round wire.

Im sorry but i will have to disagree. I have been using 316L for around a year, i get if from Amazon sold as jewelry wire for around 8 bucks for 20 meters. It is a fantastic wire, lower resistance so more surface area, which means more vapor and flavor. Also a 26g .5 ohm build with 316L will be a cooler vape that 26g Kanthal, just using .5ohms as an example.

I have never purchased and of the high priced wires, Gplat, haywire, etc. I use 316L jewelry wire because i am not clueless and did my research as opposed to jumping on the Gplat train.

Sorry to disagree, obviously i agree with you a lot judging by the +23 next to your name. Just wanted to let you know not everyone is a clueless pleeb. In fact i have spread this information for almost a year now for those that were interested and i have given away probably 30m of the stuff just to prove it is the same thing as the high priced wires.

June 5, 2015

So basically here is my story. I've been vaping for around 7/8 months now, started with your standard cheapo ego battery/clearo. I then moved to a slightly better iPOW2 with a Genitank, had a nice little screen and variable wattage and whatnot, then I got a subtank with a kbox for my daily vape. (Can I just add that I absolutely f****** LOVE IT.)

But just the other day, I decided to (foolishly) take the plunge into the world of rebuildables. I tried using the subtank RBA but that was a bust, the side plate just gets stuck on the horrible threading on it, atleast mines does. So I bought a Tugboat 1:1 clone. It was stupid I know, I have no clue what to do really, I've got japanese organic cotton, but when it comes to building the coils themselves I have no clue what to do. I don't know what is a safe coil to build with my setup. For running an RDA I'd be using a eFest 2500mAh 3.7v battery with my genuine Nemesis mech mod. Any help regarding which gauge of wire to use, what size I should wrap them at, and how many wraps I should use would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance r/RBA[1] [1] !<3

P.S I'm aware the gauge/wraps/size is all down to personal preference, but I'd really appreciate some beginners tips for a foolish young vaper, Thanks guys!

Edit - I'd just like to point out that I was using an Ohm's law calculator to work out wattages, etc on my Mech, I found out that at around 0.4/0.5Ohm (OCC) coil, my battery outputs around 27/28w with my 3.7v battery.

I was given some Gplat 24g too. From what i understand from all the posts ive read here and elsewhere is that Gplat is a form of 317L (SS welding wire). 316L is a surgical SS which is also used in jewelry making. I really liked the Gplat but there was no way i was going to pay those kinds of prices so after some research i settled on 316L.

Its a pretty fantastic wire, the ramped up time is pretty low and as it has less resistance per foot you require more, more surface area = more clouds and flavor. I order it from Amazon.

The down side is that its not magnetic, got to be careful where the pieces fly when you clip it.

As the title says I'm looking for a cooler vape...

my current set up is: Sigelei 150 + quicksilver RDA (dual 29g twisted coils, .5 ohm). I'm running it at 70w because I get great flavor and clouds. Problem is I don't like the warmth of it!!

My goal is to keep the production and flavor but cool the draw down?!?! This is one thing I can't figure out... I'll be ordering more kanthan soon so if I order a different gauge will that help? If so which one?

**** PLEASE AND THANK YOU for any advise you can provide!!

You could try SS 316L/317L, what some testing indicates is Gplat and other high end wire It provides a cooler vape, i use 26g 316L @.3 ohms and it is nice and cool. You can get 65 feet on Amazon for under ten dollars delivered.

Also the lower the gauge the cooler the vape with Kanthal so your coils using 26g would be significantly cooler. But 316L/317L would be cooler still.

EDIT: You can use Steam Engine to check temps of coils.

Would you guys benefit from knowing what's in gplatt? [R]

I work in the ship building industry and we have an on site metalogy department. If this post gets enough attention I'll pull a favor and get you guys a list of everything it's composed of.
Edit - I don't build shit.
More editing - well I guess this has got enough attention. I'll take it down to the lab this morning and see what we can find.

Update - I have handed some wire in to the lab. They said they will have it looked at by the end of the week. We are a bit thin on the ground at the moment due to summer holidays ect. I will do a separate post when I have received the results.

Thanks for your patience.

You seem to know a lot more about metal than me. What's the difference between the wire you're buying and this?
