Beginner looking for accessory advice [R]

1 year agofox112 posted submission on magicTCG.
March 5, 2019

Dear fellow Magic players,

I am currently in the middle of getting back into Magic after an absence of about 15 years and I really love it again. As I am currently building a collection to participate in local store events, I am looking for some advice regarding (necessary or nice-to-have) accessories I should get.

  • Storage: Regarding storage, I was looking into the several options by "Ultimate Guard". I thought about using the "Boulder 100+" for my decks and the "(Twin) Flip'n'Tray" for transport. Is that a suitable choice? What I haven't figured out, though, is how to store my collection of surplus cards at home. I thought about using (one or multiple) "ArkHive 400+" with some Card Dividers. What do you think? Any other options I should look into?
  • Sleeves: Since I have read during research that "Ultimate Guard" seems to have problems with sleeves from other brands, I thought about using theirs for double sleeving, but in almost all of the threads I visited, "Dragon Shield" came up as one of the best choices. Do you have any experience with using "Dragon Shield" with "Ultimate Guard" products? In my case, that would be double sleeved decks for standard, so maybe around 80 cards (including tokens) at most. If "Dragon Shield" and "Ultimate Guard" work together well, which ones should I get for double sleeving? Based on the threads I read, I think I would choose the "Dragon Shield Perfect Fit 100" for the inner sleeve and the "Dragon Shield Matte 100" for the outer sleeve. Would that work?
  • Playmat: I am quite unsure about playmats. Should I get a playmat and if yes, which one? Are the ones by "Ultimate Guard" worthwhile? I though about picking up a "SuperHive 550+" too. Do other playmats, apart from the "Ultimate Guard" ones, fit in there?
  • Dice: Also, which dice should I get? I thought about getting one of those D20 dice to count life, or is there a better way to do this? I also saw that there are specific +X/+X and -X/-X dice. Should I get a couple of those too?
  • Additional accessories: Did I forget something? Is there anything else I should look at or I absolutely need?

Thank you all for taking the time to read this and for helping me out. I am super excited to get back into Magic and I am already looking forward to reading your suggestions.

For Deck boxes you have so many options, ultimate guard is great, I have a bunch of boulders and love them. When I play at my LGS I bring one deck in a flip n tray.

For Collections: I recommend binders and basic boxes like this https://www.amazon.com/BCW-Monster-Storage-Holds-trading/dp/B000K41E6K/ref=zg_bs_2358923011_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=P3BJJA4XGV4TVVFVC1PG

Sleeves: I only ever single sleeve. The new Ultimate Guard Katana are supposedly incredible. Dragonshield are very popular. There are also cheaper brands that do the job as well.

Playmat: You need this. I've had a number of playmats and never really noticed a big difference. Get one that looks nice.

Dice: I have a handful of D6 and D20s in my box that's it. If you're playing a heavy token deck you may need to get more later. My LGS sells a little box of small D6s for like $8 well worth it imo.

I'll link my storage solution because maybe someone will get some use out of it ( /u/TLan718 ?) but I'm not sure it will be a great fit for you.

http://adamhorton.com/flog/dominion-storage/

On the other hand, one of the components I use (the cardboard boxes) may work just fine for your needs:

You might not need to order these exact boxes from Amazon. Most local game stores will sell you similar boxes of varying sizes for pretty cheap so this may work out better for you.

Storage Strategies [R]

So we have our cards sleeved, coins capsules and other augments in place. Now we just need a good strategy for the massive collection of cards we expect to amass.

We are looking at the Broken Token setup but we’d like to know what wooden cases folks use. I know the at Hobby Lobby is the standard but are there any other cases you’ve seen that work well?

We currently have two Core Sets and we’ll most likely be picking up Dunwich Legacy in the very near future. Thanks as always for all the help for those of us new to the game!

It is in no danger of being full anytime soon, but if it does, I would move the Player cards out first.

Storing cards. [R]

I am a fairly new player to Magic, but i am already running out of space for my cards. Currently i do not own anything that is built to store cards except for one deck box.
I have found several boxes on different sites, but i am saving money for an event i am going to in May. Is there some kind of DIY card box one can make with perhaps a shoebox? I would love to get some tips here. Thanks!

Making boxes is pretty easy, all you need is a showbox, some cardbox and maybe glue or a stapler for a decent low budget box. Take a shoebox and cut some cardboard stripes as long and high as the shoebox. Attach them them to the ground of the box so that you get lanes that are wide enough to keep Magic cards.

Should look like one of these:

Best card holder for Arkham Horror? [R]

Hey guys, I recently picked up Arkham+all the expansions. Can anyone recommend a card holder that can take care of the whole base game+all the expansions. Maybe leave an amazon link to it? If it's not possible to get one that holds them all, does anyone have a foamcore plan to make one? Thanks!!

EDIT: I am referring to the board game, not the LCG.

If you mean the card game, I'm using this box, which is only a little over a quarter full with all the current content plus an extra core set, all sleeved:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000K41E6K/ref=cmswrcpapa_kb.2zb1BPACD6

(You can also find the same box at coolstuffinc.com for $4.)

I also folded up some old index cards to use as dividers.

If you mean the board game, then I'm not sure; sorry!

Take two of these, cut one row off of one of them, then put them in one of these. You may want to add a little padding to top and bottom to make sure everything fits snug. It's a little large, but manageable. I've got room for the new expansion and easily two more of the same size.

General question on storing reverse holos [R]

I was just wondering how other collectors store their reverse holos?

I seem to be building quite the pile of them and I am not sure what to do with them all.. should I sleeve them? The SM reverse pattern looks very nice and all of my old DP and BW era reverse look like crap now - all scratched up.

I have been putting the rare reverse holos at the back of my binder.

Just curious I guess..

Well, I use these and fill in the gaps with deck boxes and similarly sized/shaped objects so cards don't fall over or move around too much.
Edit: Oh, and I have about ten of these boxes. I really ought to finish sorting and sell off a lot of my bulk. Nobody needs 32+ copies of Fossil Grimer.

New player (no budget) planning to go all in on this game! Some questions. [R]

3 years agoDABuehl posted submission on lotrlcg.
March 18, 2017

I'm an avid netrunner player and fell in love with this game after watching some players play in my LCG. I have a few questions before getting into this game:

  1. Like netrunner, do I need 2-3 core sets?

  2. I've done some research and it seems that each expansions are kinda "independant" to it's cycle adventure packs they release. For example, Heirs of Numenor expansion is required to play AGAINST THE SHADOW CYCLE. The question is can I mix the cards from different cycles or do they have to stay separated? How does this work?

  3. What is the best way to organize the cards? Box or binders?

  4. I realized that the first 2 cycles are out of print so I can't really find the adventure packs that are not overpriced. Will those be reprinted in the near future?

3 years agoDABuehl posted on lotrlcg.
March 18, 2017

1) Like Netrunner, the LotR LCG includes less-than-complete-playsets of many cards. Unlike Netrunner, because you don't need to keep up with a competitive meta, there is less need for multiple cores to complete those playsets. When I was getting started, the urge to buy more copies of the core was greatest when I was playing with only the core (mostly because building full-size decks that don't include bad cards with just the core is hard). My recommendation would be to get 1 core and proxy in cards that you need until you get the chance to expand beyond that. Spend your first $200ish on stuff other than more cores. If, after that, you want more, then get a second (or look on ebay for someone selling their 4th copy of each of the 2-ofs). Some of the 1-ofs would be nice to have multiple copies, but once your card pool grows, you'll see less need for it.

2) You can build player decks from all the cards you own, regardless of cycle. The adventure pack quests will use encounter cards from the corresponding deluxe expansion.

3) Good question, if you're looking to start a fight (right up there with "How should I sleeve?"). :) I store in a 3200-card, multi-row box, like this one. It's getting fullish, and I have lots more cards to buy. I'm probably going to upgrade to this soon.

And for the record, I use Dragon Shield Matte Clears for constructed player decks. Stored player cards are unsleeved. All encounter cards are in penny sleeves.

4) They will be. It'll probably be a few months. You can either wait on them, or jump to something else.

Not answering your question, but related to #4: Lots of folks will tell you that the only way to play is to buy all packs in the order they were released, but I disagree. Buy the things that will let you build decks that look fun to you. Something you'll find true here that isn't true in Netrunner is that you don't need to play the strongest decks. You can often find success with a good enough decks using a mechanic or theme you enjoy, so let that guide your purchasing.

Favourite mode of TCG storage/transport? [R]

3 years, 3 months agoxxxJakkxxx posted submission on boardgames.
Dec. 6, 2016

A long time ago, a friend of mine and I were huge fans of the Stargate: SG-1 TCG. There was one hobby shop in our city that sold the cards, and we were pretty much his only customers for the game--he brought them in specifically knowing that we would buy them. I recently dug my cards back out of storage, wanting to get back into the game after introducing my partner to the TV series and her subsequently falling in love with it. I found myself lacking all the cards I needed to build the decks I wanted to, so contacted my friend, and arranged to buy her collection from her for $50.

Fast forward to now, when I've finally finished sorting and organizing and counting my collection. I've somehow managed to amass over 2,500 cards. They're arranged into types and values, and rubber-banded into easier to manage piles, but--I have NO IDEA how to store them.

I'm not under any illusions that they'll ever become worth any significant amount of money, but I'd still like to store them safely, and in a way that allows us to continue to play with them, build new decks, etc. So, for those of you with the massive MTG collections, or who own Legendary and all its numerous expansions: what are your favourite solutions?

Arkham Horror: The Card Game - Storage Solutions? [R]

3 years, 3 months agoeyeoftheliger101 posted submission on boardgames.
Dec. 2, 2016

Although, I've been gaming for a bit now I've never invested a huge amount of time or effort into alternate storage solutions or upgrades for my games. Never done a foamcore. I rarely even sleeve. At best, I've purchased a couple Planos to help sort very chit or bit heavy games. Additionally, I've never purchased any other LCG/CCG's before in which I was required to manage an exorbitant amount of cards. But here I am on the ground floor of Arkham Horror: The Card Game. I plan to continue to pick up a few expansions, likely completing at least the first cycle.

Even after just unboxing the base set, I can see managing the stacks of cards becoming an issue. So I'm looking for advice from those of you who have already come before me and solved this dilemma.

Ideally, I'm not seeking to invest a ton into fancy pants wooden organizers (although I don't understand how one of those could even effectively fit in the small-ish sized base box and have room for the expansions), but I'm willing to be a little crafty, within reason.

So, you LCG/CCG fantanatics, how do you do it?

I purchased a cheap BCW storage box off amazon. It arrives flat and takes about 5 minutes to set up. To help with organizing the cards, I used these dividers from BGG. I printed them on cardstock, then inserted them into sleeves.

Some pics:

The cards in the first column are all the cards from 1 core set, plus all the player cards from an additional core set. The extra scenario cards in the third column are unused. As you can see, there is still plenty of room for expansions.

My Storage Solution for All Expansions... [R]

3 years, 8 months agovilpachu posted submission on dominion.
Aug. 2, 2016

...with plenty of room for more.

UPDATE (5-AUG-18): With the upcoming Renaissance expansion, I will finally have to remove the randomizer cards from the box, which is fine because I never use them anyway.

I've mentioned this solution and some of its components in a few others threads, but here's the whole thing, all in one place, with pictures.

Here are the pictures, but keep reading if you want additional info. Also, let me know what you think or if you see ways it can be improved.

Pictures - http://imgur.com/a/Pnn5o (apologies for the quality)

I used the Hobby Lobby box for a long time and really liked it, but A) it wasn't designed to carry 25+ lbs of cargo and had popped open a couple times, spilling my cards, and B) Empires would have been the last expansion I could fit in it. I originally planned to use a briefcase or camera case with a foam insert for the cards, but I couldn't find a case that I both liked and could afford. Also, the foam idea just didn't work too well. Changing direction, I found the below canvas case that was the perfect size (22 x 15 x 5).

Storage Case - http://www.casesbysource.com/product/soft-bag-with-padded-lid-22155sc

The shoulder strap and the d-rings on the case were plastic though, and I wasn't sure how much weight they would take. So I replaced them with the below shoulder strap and some 1 in. d-rings from the local hardware store. It also needed some additional structure so I cut a dry erase board I found at a craft store and put it in the bottom of the case. Finally, it needed some additional padding so I put some 1/2 inch speaker foam on top and bottom.

Shoulder Strap - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002RI6Y8

After I figured out that foam wouldn't work for the inside of the case, I found two 3200 count, 15 x 12.5 in card storage boxes at my FLGS. Each has 4 rows, but after cutting one row off one of the boxes, they fit in the case perfectly. There are a lot of similarly sized boxes to be found elsewhere, so be sure measure (including height) before buying.

As point out by /u/vilpachu in the comments, these storage boxes can be found on Amazon as well.

Storage Boxes - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000K41E6K/

I'd been storing my tokens in plastic bags, but after I saw this picture (http://www.adamhorton.com/files/dom_open.jpg) of Adam Horton's plastic token storage containers I wanted to find something similar. I ended up using the below screw-top tins with color-coded stickers on top so I know what's inside.

Token Storage Tins - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FY7OGCM

Finally, I've been using Sumpfork's Dominion Tabbed Divider Generator (http://domtabs.sandflea.org/) for my dividers for quite a long time. I had them professionally printed and laminated, and they've held up wonderfully.

There are a couple of obvious and expected drawbacks. It is large and, therefore, a bit cumbersome. Also, it weighs 32 lbs (updated for Nocturne). I don't mind either, but I can see how they would be issues for some.

How do you store your cards? [R]

3 years, 9 months agoJuly 1, 2016

Mine are increasingly becoming harder to manage. Especially building a new deck and finding all the cards I need takes longer and longer.

I think the best way of storing the cards would be grouped both by each corp/runner faction and also by card type. But even if I found a good way of doing that, how would I then take my cards with me when I travel?

What are you doing to keep everything in check? How are you storing your cards?

I had binders for a while, but got really lazy about keeping it organized. Now I switched to a cardboard box and am much happier. I keep everything sorted by faction and alphabetically and can find things quickly with ease. Since my collection doesn't completely fill up the box, I also store my Lord of the Rings LCG cards in there, too.

Does anyone have any tips for relocating your collection of cards? I'm moving from Minneapolis to New Jersey, and I have a moving company coming next week to take everything. My main question is if I should be worried about my boxes of commons / uncommons being put on a moving truck. I'm guessing it will be going through some temperature abuse on the way to NJ and I'm just kind of worried about things getting warped. I used twine to tie the lids on and it didn't cause any issues. Just have to make sure there isn't free space to allow the cards to slide. I used deckboxes and legos to fill in the free space.

There are some basic cardboard box options that aren't bad. The 5000 count box might be a bit big for you, but the 4-row 3200 count box might be good. You just need to get some dividers to allow you to sort by color.

Wait, scratch that. Maybe use some holiday gift boxes that WotC produced. Return to Ravnica was the best quality box, and then they went down from there.

Or were you looking for something more portable?

I've been out of box space for a while now with the Crabs Adjust Humidity sets... I ended up buying a three row cardboard box off of Amazon for $9 or something.

Edit>>here's the box I bought. I've got it about 2/3rds full right now with all of the official CAH and Crabs sets that have been released, plus a few of the other promo sets (like PAX East). I can post pictures when I get home if anyone's interested.

I use this box. I sleeved my cards so they wouldn't all fit in the Biigger Blacker box. Here's the end result: http://i.imgur.com/Ooj7eHH.jpg

How do you carry around Dominion, and what tips do you have to make setting up games easier? [R]

I'm in dire need of a storage solution for Dominion that doesn't consist of half a dozen horribly size-inefficient boxes. Two popular ways I've seen are modifying either an original game box or a wooden case from Hobby Lobby. Either way will need card dividers and tabs, which seem to be easier said than done. Some people use index cards, and others painstakingly cut out each one. I assume the dividers can be balsa wood or foam board.

There's a kickstarter that has the most elegant solution I've seen yet, but the price tag of $250 is absolutely bonkers. I especially love how the basic treasure and victory cards have their own connected trays, so if there is a way to do that on the cheap, I'm very interested.

There's also a play mat that looks pretty nifty for keeping things organized on the table. It would certainly make setup and cleanup much faster.

How have you done it?

I made a custom divider document which I printed on 2"x4" address labels. I stuck those on these and have the entire set in a 3200-card box.

It's still heavy, but not nearly as unwieldy. It also fits all the components. I opted to put everything in alphabetical order (not by set) with the common cards up front and cards that go together (like Hermit and Madman) next to each other. My randomizer is set to pop the cards out alphabetically (not by set).

[Contest] Find me a cheap storage solution! [R]

5 years, 11 months agoApril 26, 2014

CLOSED Okay, so. It is my goal to own every N64 game released in North America. That is a bit under 300 games. 260 something, I believe. I have 23. That being said, I am running out of room in this little box to hold all my games. Since I can get most of these N64 games for under $5-$10, I think my collection will be growing fast. What I need is a cheap storage solution to hold all of my N64 stuff. Link to me something useful on amazon, and the winner will get something $10-$15 (I don't have prime.) I will choose a winner on Monday! Things to keep in mind:

  • There are close to 300 N64 games
  • I own two N64 systems
  • I own four controllers and a couple accessories

My genius storage solution is to use a 4 row card box and removing two dividers. Fits NES, SNES, and N64 cartridges perfectly (width and height for SNES and N64, width only for NES)

Quick question from a potential newbie [R]

I'm thinking about acquiring my own set of Dominion but was curious as to how many expansions fit in the original box? I don't mind making my own foam core insert if the insert that comes with it isn't optimal, but I really like keeping games in their own boxes.

Honestly, I started with the big box, and I immediately got one of these: http://www.amazon.com/BCW-Monster-Storage-3200-Count/dp/B000K41E6K/ref=sr13?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1395933300&sr=1-3

How to Organize My Card Collection [R]

Jan. 28, 2014

I am trying to find the best way to organize all my common and uncommon cards. My collection is large (10,000 plus cards in these rarities) and im just not sure how to go about sorting them. Has anyone had any luck is sorting a collection this large? If so how did you and what products (Binders, Boxes, Fat Packs, Etc) did you use to sort and contain all the cards?

Any help or ideas are welcome!

So, I have 3 of these. I use them only for commons/uncommons. I sorted by expansion, then by color, then by creature/spells.

So I bought a shit ton of dividers and I divided up the sets. Then within each set I have the colors divided in a fashion where creatures face forward, then all others for that color face backwards. My color pattern goes White/Blue/Black/Red/Green/Multi/Artifact & Colorless.

Take your pick in direction, for whatever reason I was really excited about my newer cards so I did them first and worked my way back to the oldest. The result was that historically speaking, my boxes "read" right to left.

I am still somewhat new to magic but addicted to the "cardboard crack" just like everyone else, and I have started opening a fair bit of packs and was just wondering what everyone does with all of their commons and uncommons that they have no use for.

P.S. I really don't want to just throw them away

Definitely save anything that's playable/tradeable. For everything else, I keep them in a big white box, because you never know when something might be relevant or needed.

Alternatively, you could build pauper decks and use them as house decks to break the monotony of competitive play.
