I don't think all of these are technically part of the "Amazon Prime Day Deals" but:

Not headphone gear, but the Audio-Technica AT2020 microphone is $74.25 (from $99.99).

After just shy of 10 years at my current company where my office has been a 'cave' in the middle of the building without windows and a ceiling low enough that I hit my head if I'm not paying attention, I'm finally moving to a real office! I get windows to the outside world, and proper fixed desks with real shelves for storage instead of garage style racking storage. Carpet that is nice, flat and professional looking instead of bunched up bright red carpet that I can barely roll my chair across.

Best of all, I get to be part of the business like everyone else; there might even be opportunities to engage with other employees to proactively provide value beyond what they reactively ask for...!

Nothing technical here, I'm just excited to finally be able to feel like an employee instead of a troll to be kept under the bridge. Still not sure if I'm dumb or just stubborn to have put up with it for this long, but onwards and upwards!

Noise cancelling works best against constant noise, but is less effective against stuff like talking. You may be better off with good studio monitors that simply block noise, instead of active cancellation. I love these: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54

My office gets insanely loud but noone cares. Am I the crazy one here? [R]

3 months agoPreparedBody posted submission on jobs.
May 16, 2019

I have the problem that my office is often mind-numbingly loud (in my opinion), but nobody except me really seems to care, to the point that I feel like I must be the crazy one. Some days are ok, but on many other days, there’s basically nonstop loud talking, laughing, or random annoying babbling for hours without pause. This is mainly caused by one specific coworker who is generally very loud and also tells inappropriate life stories sometimes (I really don’t need to know about who his best friend is having unprotected sex with, or stories about his wife and her underwear etc.) I dislike him immensely but I could deal with it if he just shut up occasionally.

So sometimes I’m expected to work on complex issues while people are essentially yelling for 4+ hours at a time, because the worst of it usually starts after lunch break. It would even be bearable if those conversations were work related and necessary, but the one guy in particular often does kind of a ‚stream of consciousness‘ thing where he mumbles to himself, hums, sighs, groans, coughs or yells out random things almost non stop, and at a volume like he’s trying to talk to people in a pub over music. Imagine something like ‚so then you gotta do x and write y - haha! Fuck yeah! Chakka! And then - uh I get an error. Fuck. Fucking error. What’s the problem. Haha!‘ for 4-5 fucking hours. I know he can choose to stop this because he doesn’t do it during meetings. I also know our boss doesn’t care because he often stands there and laughs about it.

I don’t think I’m that extremely over sensitive where volume is concerned. I don’t mind people talking at a normal volume or the occasional phone call, friendly banter etc. I do however mind grown adults shouting at each other from two table rows further, making childish noises and just causing an incredible distraction. On the flip side, most other coworkers are really quiet and barely talk all day, and when the one guy isn’t here it gets very quiet, but they don’t seem hugely bothered by days with constant noise either.

I know this because I brought this up two times, and nicely asked for people to keep their conversations at a reasonable volume, but basically no-one agreed. There are occasionally comments being made which show that everyone is well aware that it is loud, and even that one or two people are the main causes, but nobody seems to see this as something that should be avoided. I was told I cannot sit in another (empty) office and basically nothing will be done. The ‚solution‘ offered was that I can tell people to quiet down directly in the moment, which I have tried and which goes largely ignored. We can wear headphones and listen to music, but that doesn’t help much considering the guy can be heard from multiple rooms away. At this point the only thing that might help is wearing earplugs, but I think it’s ridiculous I have to resort to that.

I’m at a point where I find it hard to get work done at all and get increasingly aggressive and irritated when I am flooded with noise for hours. I should add that I have ADHD which makes it very hard (actually impossible) for me to focus on anything when there is constant loud noise happening. I am not hugely crazy about this job in general so I feel like I need to just find something else. I’m just a bit scared because this is my first job and I wonder if this is just what I have to expect from open offices (which are the standard in my industry).

Am I just being overly sensitive? I honestly feel like I'm in a sitcom when 20 people are quietly sitting and working and one guy shouts like he's fucking deaf and nobody bats an eye.

Audio-Technica ATHM40x Professional Monitor Headphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JnP3CbEQ4NFQE

These are probably the best headphones I ever had.

If you dont like over ear I’d recommend

1MORE Triple Driver In-Ear Earphones Hi-Res Headphones with High Resolution, Bass Driven Sound, MEMS Mic, In-Line Remote, High Fidelity for Smartphones/PC/Tablet - Gold https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01A7G35S0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_LiP3Cb3DG1833

They dont have active noise cancelling but they offer many different ear buds. If you find the perfect size you can seal the sound

There are better if you have more to spend but I personally try not to spend more than 100 on headphones

A lot of people swear by the M40x's too and claim they are better than the 50's, and generally run cheaper. On sale for a $100 right now actually: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54

Those may be worth picking up. /r/headphones can tell you more about other $80-150 options too.

One thing i really like about my M50x's (and the m40x's can get one too) is that there are tons of bluetooth adapters: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Adapter-and-Amplifier-BAL-M50X/dp/B01MFFH54C/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=BALM50x&qid=1553534369&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-1-catcorr

So my set can be wireless now too for when i'm travelling, which is rad.

Actually, holy shit, they have a wireless + mic adapter now for the M50x's:

https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Adapter-and-Amplifier-BAL-M50X/dp/B07K4YNH2N/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=BALM50x&qid=1553534369&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-1-catcorr&th=1

If that was out when i bought my Arctis 7's I totally would have gotten that adapter instead, lol. Though apparently the mic is garbage.

  • $100 budget
  • over the ear, closed headphones for noise cancelling
  • comfortable

Go for the Audio Technica ATH M40x. It is perfect combination for gaming and music without needing an additional amplifier with its great quality drivers for the money and has better sound quality than most headsets (headphone with microphone setup for $100) .

It has almost 2,000 reviews with 4.4 star reviews.

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=audio+technica+m40&qid=1552598432&s=gateway&sr=8-3

If you want 100+, go for

Closed back headphones

Audio Technica ATH M50X studio monitoring headphones

Beyerdynamic DT770 32/80 ohm studio monitoring headphones

Sennheiser HD598Cs studio headphones

-

Open back headphones

Beyerdynamic DT990 32/80 ohm studio monitoring headphones (NINJA streamer uses this headphone)

Sennheiser HD598SR studio headphones (Fortnite streamer "SypherPK" and many more streamers use this)

All these headphones listed above have incredible reviews on amazon and I used to be an audiophile so I researched plenty of headphones

if you go over 100+ headphones, an amp might be necessary to pump out its full potential

Budget amp: FiiO E10k Amp/DC combo

I highly recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x headphones. They're entry-level professional studio monitor headphones, meaning they're tuned to sound as accurate to the audio source as possible. They have no fake bass boost or treble lifting, they're tuned flat.

I love them for competitive shooter gaming, because audio cues like footsteps and other mid-range sounds really stand out.

Additionally, these headphones are physically comfortable even after several hours of continuous use. They don't squeeze my head, they have a large adjustment range and the earcups are soft but firm.

Also, the flat tuning helps with listening fatigue. Some headsets with boosted bass or treble can make your ears start to hurt after long listening sessions, especially at higher volumes. I have yet to experience that with the M40x.

Edit:

$86 shipped my point is for an extra $16 you get a brand new pair (no scratches), one day shipping, and if you end up not liking them you have amazon prime's return policy as well and the manufacturer warranty if something does break. IMO that's well worth the $16

Any good headphones for both gaming and music? [R]

July 27, 2018

I’m looking for a new pair of headphones for listening to music on my laptop and phone. Whilst I’m at it, I wondered if I could solve two problems at once by getting a pair that works well with the PS4 too.

Has anyone had any good experiences with headphones that work well with music and their PS4? A mic for voice chat would be good but optional, nice sound for single player games is more what I’m after. Budget is £100 ($130 dollars).

1 year agoExtremePitchforking posted comment on PS4.
July 27, 2018

I'm going to blow up your budget here, so I apologize. I struggled for a long time to find an acceptable pair of headphones using similar criteria to your own. I recommend you just buy a good pair of audiophile quality headphones and use a USB headphone amp on your PS4.

The amp isn't strictly required, but the sound quality difference from driving your headphones off the controller is staggering. With the amp you can also use high impedance headphones if you wish. Here's the amp I'm currently using. It plugs directly into the PS4 using USB and the PS4 detects it as a USB headset. ($100): http://www.schiit.com/products/fulla-2

Any pair of quality headphones will do. I'm using Audio-Technica M40x. You don't have to spend a lot to get quality headphones, but you can if you want to get something even nicer. The M40x have low impedance so you can use them with your laptop and phone. ($100): https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54

If you need a microphone for chat, the ModMic is excellent. The business version is all you need. It uses adhesive to attach to your headphones. The mic is removable via a magnet in the base. ($50): https://antlionaudio.com/collections/modmic-for-business

I know this is double what you wanted to spend, but a setup like this is extremely nice and, in my opinion, is way better than traditional gaming headsets.

What headphones and microphone for gaming and streaming would you recommend? [R]

I currently own a Hyperx Cloud gaming headset, it's served me well however it's becoming a little worn so I was looking at possibly upgrading and leaving behind "gaming" headsets as I believe I could get better audio and mic quality without buying a usually overpriced gaming headset.

I also think a better microphone will help with streaming as I tend to stream games for friends to watch and my mic picks up a lot of background noise atm which when I rewatch the vod it sounds rather annoying.

In any case I'd like to know what you would recommend/what you currently use.

My budget for upgrading is currently £200.

If you are looking for nice "headphones + mic" combo, I would advise buying Sennheiser HD 559 (currently on sale for $99) with Audio-Technica ATH-M40X being an alterntive, and USB microphone, for example, Audio-Technica ATR2500-USB or Marantz Professional MPM-2000U - also on a sweet sale now.

As for headsets. Sennheiser GAME ONE is the only "good" gaming headset I would recommend streaming with if that is what you need.

As for me I use a pair of good old unkillable Sennheiser HD 598s with Recording Tools MCU-01, but I am looking forward to buy an XLR mic with USB audio interface since I really need two mics.

I've been listening to them for 20 years on various speakers and earbuds. Finally bought a pair of decent headphones and it's like, holy shit, I've been colorblind but now I'm seeing a sunset for the first time in my life.

I'm hesitant to say any music should require fancy gear to enjoy, but the autechre experience is without doubt greatly enhanced with good headphones. I know either Sean or Rob said their music was always meant for headphone listening in their WATMM AMA from 2013 but I haven't seen them publicize it outside of that.

Buying SteelSeries Arctis 3 Headset + New Controller: Any Benefit to Getting a Headset Adapter? [R]

Hi all! Just wondering if there's any benefit to the controller headset adapters if you have a new controller that already has the jack?

Using the SteelSeries Arctis 3.

Headset:

If an adapter is helpful, any tips on which one? I see Xbox brand, turtle beach, etc.

Thanks!

EDIT: or maybe the official Xbox chatpad, since it looks like it has some controls?

Appreciate the response. I was chatting with someone the other day and they were heavily recommending that unless I was an audiophile and playing the corresponding quality FLACs, etc., that I just buy stereo studio monitor headphones like the Audio Technical ATH-M40x or the Sennheiser HD559HD559s. Both around $99, and the main choice being whether you want closed back or open headphones. For me, I don’t have any concerns that I want to be silent for those around me, I just want the best audio experience I can get in a pair of headphones.

He also said you really should power your headphones with a DAC, and his was the FiiO E10k USB DAC. I know the Astro A40s come with a DAC that a lot of people like as well. And then you can just run a different headphone cable that clips on to your headphone cable and the boom mic attaches easily. He uses the Antlion Audio ModMic and the choice there being whether or not you want a mute switch. I personally don’t stream or even play online games where I talk to people much anymore. A year ago when I was heavy into ESO and talking every day it would have mattered more, but now I’m just trying to find the best audio experience I can get.

—————

I also, for what it’s worth, picked up a Woojer Strap. It’s sort of like a SubPac, if you’re familiar with that? But instead of being an entire backpack sized rumble device, it’s just a seatbelt or messenger bag like strap. I grabbed it for $130, it’s normally $150. It has two bass transducers on it (the SubPac has 6). But it’s much more versatile and portable. It has bluetooth so you can use that to pair your audio input or just run an audio in to the Strap and then a wire out to your headphones. It also massively boosts the volume in addition to feeling like I strapped a subwoofer to my chest. I can only imagine what the SubPac is like.

I pull it out for big action movies and the odd show like “Legion”, and then it’s great for PSVR especially, but “DOOM” was amazing in it. I actually intended to just mess with it for a month - they have a 30 day money back guarantee trial period, and I bought it via PayPal credit because they’ll pay for the return shipping... but I ended up liking it so much that I kept it. If I got a nice pair of headphones, I’d probably use a splitter or figure out a way to just duplicate the audio and send that to the Strap and not worry about running the wire from that to the headphones as well. It’s frustrating that the Steel Series have one for the PS4 and one for the XBOX One, and that there’s not just an easy solution for everything.

—————

If money wasn’t an issue and you just wanted a pair of headphones that were amazing for most everything you do, what would you get? You think the ROG 7.1 would be any better than a good pair of stereo headphones? What about all the Dolby Digital, Plus, DTS, DTS: Headphone X, Atmos, and everything? Again, I don’t mind wires. The Logitech Artemis G933s use a USB dongle that transmits the bluetooth signal, they’re nice.. I just think I probably need a DAC to drive them better. I felt like an idiot for not thinking to just plug the headphones into my audio receiver, which isn’t amazing and is probably 10-15 years old, but it powers my 5.1 system and does DTS. I assume it only does stereo with headphones plugged in though, so I don’t really know what to look for with the audio processing stuff and how to maximize on games that are mastered in Atmos, etc.

Purchase advice please! [R]

  • Budget - hard $200 limit
  • Source - both a macbook pro retina, and a google pixel 1
  • Requirements for Isolation - I'd like some, if possible
  • Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - Yep
  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-sized
  • Preferred tonal balance - Overall balanced would be ideal
  • Past headphones - I'm a very broke college student, so have been using cheap gas station headphones for the last year or two. they suck.
  • Preferred Music - Hm here are some links -- my music taste is kind of all over the place.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgICDG1vOz0
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQNyTo4k_TA
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OL0KFczy2Rw
  • also simon and garfunkel

  • What would you like to improve on from your set-up - one thing that i would really like to have is a microphone. I looked at the beautiful recommended ones from the sidebar, and thought both the Sennheiser HD598CS, and the Urbanite XL both looked super cool, but I'm not sure if they would work well with the pixel...

Thanks so much for all of your help!

Budget for both is about $150 USD. So either $100 for headphones and $50 for mic or as you see fair.

Headphones should have nice sound and good quality. Neutral colors please.

Mic just needs to sound good and to be easy to control. Not a streamer or anything so don't need pro mic. I know this is Reddit about headphones and not mic but thought you might know some good ones.

Ty guys. I'm new here but trying to enter the world of not headsets

So for separate, in your budget, maybe:

  • VModa BoomPro Mic - Should be compatible with the above headphones as they have detachable cables.
  • Antlion Modmic - Would have to have the mic cable run down your headphone cable with clips.

People love the Mx40's. I got the Status Audio CB-1's for my gaming headset. If you're looking for an open back, people seem to really love the shp9500. Like i said, those are open back and are light on the bass. Another open back that people love in the price range are the HD 559. I've heard good things about the Massdrop x HiFiMAN HE-350.

Kind of depends on what you're looking for in terms of sound and where you're using them.

E: if you aren't dead set on new, i'd find something more expensive and check out /r/AVexchange. Really good deals and it's a bunch of people with headphone buying additctions. Just buy and sell constantly. I mentioned above, but i paid $350 for what would've cost me about $600 new after mods. I find that headphones is an area where people take care of their stuff because it takes a special kind of person to start dropping hundreds on headphones that aren't beats.

I mean Imma be real with you, I think you should invest in good headphones. These ATH M40x headphones are great, and they're only 100 bucks. I know 100 bucks may sound like a big investment, but these headphones are actually on the cheaper side, and provide great value for your money. I personally have the ATH M50x headphones, which are maybe like 30 bucks more expensive, but those M40X's are actually even better for mixing, since they have a nice balanced audio response.

Edit: You should also get an external audio interface I recommend this. I have one and it isn't very expensive and works great, very simple to use too.

I'm looking for nice pair of headphones under $100. I've come across a few that I'm interested in, but I just don't know. My top 3 or 4 are the Philips SHP9500S, Superlux HD668B, Audio Technica ATH-AD500X, and the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X (most expensive and a little over $100 and I'm cheap). If you have a better rec under $100 I'm interested. I'll be using the headphones on PS4 for gaming (Call of Duty, Fortnite, Battlefield, etc), Blu-ray (Movies, Anime, etc), and on Desktop/Laptop (YouTube, Music, pretty much everything except gaming, not a PC gamer). I'm mostly worried about gaming/movies, I'll probably be happy with music no matter what (if interested, I like Rock, Metal, some pop, and some rap). Also, I'm not worried about a mic and I don't have an amp/DAC but will look for one in the future. Help?

Note: Comfort is important to me, probably the most important. So if one is drastically more comfortable than the others, I'll most likely get it. I'm sick of uncomfortable things on my head. But at the same time, if something sounds a lot better but is just a little less comfortable, that's okay too!

Another note: I've only used gaming headsets (Turtle Beach, Astro, etc) and cheap earbuds/headphones in the past. I currently have the newest PS4 Astro A50s and they are UNCOMFORTABLE on the top of my head even with the mod kit. The ears are a little uncomfy too but tolerable. As far as sound, I had the 1st Gen Astro A50s before them and I thought they sounded better (I haven't messed with the audio hub for the newer ones though because I don't know what I'm doing, and the old ones were definitely more comfortable). I also have a cheap $15 pair of Sony on-ear headphones for Laptop use.

Sorry for the LOOOONG post/comment/thing (new to reddit) I just wanted to make sure all my bases were covered. If anyone can help I'll be extremely grateful. I just have a tendency of stressing over things for hours on end and it's frustrating (I've spent 12+ hours today alone searching, not counting yesterday and prior days). Well, I hope everyone had a good weekend. Good night (currently 3am here).

For 100 dollars the ATH-M40X's are a really good choice. Z reviews has done a good review on them. I use them for most things. Listening to music, editing for montages and now and then gaming. They have a balanced sound meaning they are neutral. They sound really good for the price. There a problems. The comfort is mediocre. After a while the ear cups get warm and a little uncomfortable. I recommend picking up brainwavz hm5. Another thing is that they are large. They are not that great for looks when commuting. However they sound awesome for the money. I recommend them.

Facts

Bought these a few months ago and couldn't be happier spending $100. My mixes have actually improved a tonn using these just because they present the sound as is with no bullshit so it stays consistent and accurate. They come with a really long cord that detaches from both sides and a nice little "leather" baggy to take it on the road. They also have an optional $30 Bluetooth adapter.

You said you got a $200 budget, so maybe go for a higher model although many people on youtube said 50x is not that much better than 40x and isn't worth the price difference.

Not sure if you are interested, but I would actually recommend splitting that 200 on M40Xs and a MPK Mini midi keyboard. Both are 100 and would bring more value for $200 (if you don't already have a midi keyboard.

The problem with the design of the PSVR is that although you really want a set of closed over-ear headphones like the Audio Technica M40x, they tend to not exactly fit underneath the strap quite perfectly if you have a fat head (like mine) or if you use thick replacement ear cups for better sound quality. Sure things sound amazing and immersive but it's not exactly the most comfortable option.

I've also tried Phillips SHP9500s which sound amazing (especially for their price) but again, you'll run into a situation where it might not fit perfectly tucked under the head band of the PSVR headset. These actually work well for me, but not so much for my son. The only complaint I have with them is that they are open headphones so I hear the outside world extremely easily.

Honestly, unless you're swapping the PSVR around frequently, I would say that a good set of ear-buds are going to be your best bet for isolating and giving you quality sound while not being too uncomfortable. Unless you just hate earbuds.

Depends on the headphones and depends on what you're using them for. $300 is a lot of money for a pair of headphones though. I personally would say that $100 and beyond is where I notice the quality difference less and less. This is all assuming that you're buying quality headphones and not overpriced trash like Beats.

Budget - $100ish usd, flexible for notable quality increases

Source - Mainly phone/portables, some PC & home theater amp

Requirements for Isolation - Very little, mostly home use

Preferred Type of Headphone - Over ear

Preferred tonal balance - Balanced w/ light bass preference, but kinda a newbie to this arena so unsure

Past headphones - Monoprice 8323, Monoprice 18515, Koss KSC75

Preferred Music - Alt. Rock, Musicals, Electronica, Film Scores, 90s revival & electro swing, Drum n' Bass, 80s New Wave.. kinda all over the map. Some favorites - Orbital, The Orb, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Shawn Mullins, Pentatonix, Autechre, Bjork, Danny Elfman, Primus, Nine Inch Nails, Ok Go, Michael Nesmith, Devo, Large piles of Demo Scene mod tracks.. (stopping here before this gets silly-long)

The Story - I've been pondering getting my first set of "real" headphones for a while now. I like the 8323's ok, but I know they are only a stepping stone. The 18515 sound a touch better but just are not comfy for me. All the sales flying around this weekend are getting my trigger finger itchy. Particularly the Philips SHP9500S for $52, the Sennheiser HD 559 on Amazon for $100, and maybe even the Monolith M560 for $150 or Monolith M565C at $183, if planar is really worth it.. or should I be aiming more at the old standbys of the ATH-M40x for $80. So many seeming good options, little ability to test any before dropping cash...

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

So a couple weeks ago I pulled out my Ibanez SZ320, restrung it and started playing again. It's great to be playing again. That being said, the only time I have to play is after the kids go to sleep. That's fine and great. I play in the basement anyway. But another problem arises. My in laws live in the basement in the bedroom on the other side of the wall my amp is plugged into. Not too sure about the Alpha, as it also doesn't utilize a USB soundcard (generally you can assume USB headphones to be inferior). At the least I can offer that the one I linked served me well for ~2 years. Had no issues with either playing games or listening to music. I might also consider the M40x, although it is not a headset in that it has a mic. The Cloud I will have more punchy sounding bass, however. $60 is probably a better deal over the $99 M40x's.

  • Budget: $50 - $100
  • Source: Laptop and Phone
  • Isolation: Quite a bit would be nice, may take outside
  • Type of Headphones: Full-sized, over-ear, closed back
  • Uses: Listening to music (Mainly pop) and gaming
  • Portability: Would like it to be pretty portable

I am looking for some wired headphones for some music and gaming. I have narrowed it down to the Audio Technica ATH-M40X and the Status Audio CB-1. If there are any better options, please suggest them to me. Thanks.

NEED COMFORTABLE HEADPHONES

The headphones i currently have both start to hurt my ears after only like 15-30 minutes of use. I don't have an unusually huge head, my ears do stick out a little more than average though.

Brands I've Tried:

Audio Technica ATH-M40x Pro

Technics RP-DH1200

So anyhoo, recommend me a set of over ears where comfort is #1 priority. Big ear pads so my ears don't get smashed, not a huge cord (but who cares, sometimes you're stuck with some 8' monster ^hehe ), Open or Closed doesn't matter, and weight isn't a big problem for me mainly just the ear smashing thing.

My budge is ~$150, ideally looking for a sale to get it less than $100. Thanks!

Best headphones for gaming (LOL, WOW, COD, BF) [R]

1 year, 11 months agoeuphoricherron posted submission on buildapc.
Sept. 5, 2017

What are the best headphones for gaming at the moment? Budget of up to £100. I mainly play LOL at the moment but also play COD, BF, will be playing destiny so some games will rely on hearing what's going on around me.

I've heard that the 'gaming' headsets are a bit of a gimmick. I currently have the Razer Kraken 7.1 surround but this hurts my ears after prolonged use due to the circle shaped earpieces. I have been looking at the HyperX cloud stinger and cloud 2 but not sure how good these will be for COD and BF where sometimes relying on sound. Used a set of HyperX cloud stinger's at a local gaming den and these feel so comfy! So something maybe with that same shape ear piece?

Any help will be appreciated!!!

I love my mouse. The only thing is that it is kinda heavier compared to other mouses. For headset, I would suggest getting something like an M40x and a modmic. This way, you'll get better sound and a better microphone. Unless you want a headset then I would say the Cloud II.

I honestly have no idea what to buy. Preferably something not completely ugly, but i want really good sound quality too. I dont want any 'well it depends what you like' or 'depends on how you want to listen' just list me some that suit the genre well, thanks guys. My budget is around £100/$130

Not sure about metal specifically, but in general I can't recommend the [Audio Technica ATH-M40x's] (https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr13?ie=UTF8&qid=1502021666&sr=8-3&keywords=audio+technica+ath-m40x) enough. Some of the most commonly praised headphones are the M50x's, and the M40's are very similar. The specs are listed on that Amazon link, but basically the range sounds practically identical to a casual listener so there's no need to worry about a loss of frequency response unless you're looking to do some professional mixing. They're also lighter than the M50's so they're more comfortable to wear.

I listen to a fairly wide variety of music, metal included, and I'll tell you that the M40's are a very good value for only being $100. Do your own research and get plenty of opinions, but the M40's are a very good option for the price.

Audio Technica's ATH-m40x. They're closed headphones that I've heard are great for the price. I don't have them but I do have the m50x's, which are the next step up in the series. I think the shp9500s are better than the m50x's in almost every way other than like the cables they come with.

Good Headsets? [R]

Are there any good headsets you guys know of for $50-100 that can last. My hyper x cloud stinger is sucking. First one broke because the metal piece at the end of the headset stayed in the pc when i unplugged it, making it useless. (Thanks Kingston for actually honoring your warranty and replacing it unlike some companies). The replacement I've had for six months has pretty much worn down and the sound quality is horrible. There is less sound in the right ear than in the left and there is a lot of crackling (its not interference ive tried it with other devices and they work). It has the sound quality of a pair of $2 airplane earbuds, and I need a replacement. Are there any good headsets from $50-100 that can last for a while and won't degrade in sound quality over time like this one did.

Ok guys, im currently debating two scenarios atm based on my current setup.

As it stands I right now have a Audio-Technica ATH-M40x ( link for ref However I am unsatisfied with it. Coming from a hyper X cloud headset I feel that the headphones are lacking proper bass. Granted, I am currently using onboard audio (again, link ref)

Im currently debating going back to the cloud headset, but before I do, I want your take if I should instead get an internal sound card. Currently price range is $150.

You can choose Closed back headphones (the classic ones you have already used. Closed back models offer good isolation and do not leak sound. This is your choice when there are people around you, or you want isolation from noisy a environment.) or Open Back headphones (Open back models offer next to no isolation and will leak sound -and allow you to hear what happens around you-, but they are the best sounding models). Open headphones achieve the best sound, soundstage (feeling that sound is coming from around you) and imaging (ability to locate the origin of one sound).

If you are here because you want to get a replacement for a gaming headset, I would recommend you Open back, but since they don’t isolate, you must choose. If isolation is required, get closed back, if that’s not a concern, go open.

Some closed back cans:

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x. 100$. Balanced headphones, very good feedback from lots of people. Typical entry level headphones to the rabbit hole.

Sennheiser HD 598Cs. 125$. Balanced, very very detailed, great instrumental separation. Comfortable as hell, Very recommended.

Beyerdynamic DT770. 160$. V-shaped signature (lots of bass and lots of treble). Great for explosions, movies, and rock. Treble can be harsh if you are sensible. Get the 32 ohm version, as the 80 (may) and 250 (do) need an amplifier to work properly.

Those are some examples of entry-mid level of closed cans. There are lots more, depending of your budget!

As for open cans:

Superlux HD668b. 40$. Those are THE CANS. The best quality for low budget you can get. Hands down. Great soundstage, Bass light. They are not too comfortable, but pads can be changed for a deluxe comfort (extra expense). You are not getting anything better at this price. For gaming in a budget, this are the headphones you were looking for,

Philips SHP9500. 80$. Mid-forward signature. Good soundstage, great comfort. Very detailed. Another amazing quality for the budget headphone.

Sennheiser HD 598 SR. 170$. Very similar to the HD 598Cs, but with open back. Wider soundstage, a little less bass. Very balanced headphones. Super-duper comfortable. Great for long gaming sessions.

Philips Fidelio X2. 250$. V-shaped signature. Those are in another league. Build quality is just.. OMG. Extreme soundstage and imaging. More comfortable than the HD 598. Bass is BOOOOOM!!!. A little pricey, and can be somewhat fatiguing to listen if you are treble sensible, due to high treble.

Well, that’s all. I have selected only headphones that don’t need an amplifier. Now is your turn to research, watch some Youtube videos, read some reviews, and give them a try.

1. Budget

I don't have a budget since I'll be saving for each individual necessity for the long run, though I would not spend more than $1,000 for speakers. That being said, you can make a decision on what are price points for each respective item.

2. What are you looking for?

I'm essentially looking for a living room audiophile set up. I would not mind recommendations other than floor standing speakers, but that is what I have now and I'm very pleased with the way it looks. I do not know what I'm looking for since I'm not sure what should be upgraded and what is missing.

3. How will you typically be using the gear?

Mid-Field

4. What gear do you own?

Specifics, I have a Yamaha RX-V381BL Receiver with a pair of Andrew Jones's ELAC B6 speakers. For headphones, I only use an Audio Technica's ATH-M40X.

5. What do you intend on using for a source?

I'll be using a laptop connected via HDMI to the receiver (unless someone thinks I should opt for a different source if I get a dedicated stereo receiver.)

6. What material will you be using your gear for?

Dedicated for music. I would like it to connect this system with HDMI ports i/o, but if a dedicated stereo is necessary, i'll be glad to go through that route.

7. Are you willing to buy used?

Yes, I am willing to buy used, though craigslist, etc. is not preferred. Something like Amazon would be nice. Local: Los Angeles.

Thoughts:

I do not know anything about amplifiers, DACs, tubes, etc. so if you could inform me, that would be appreciated.

Note:

This was re-uploaded with updated information for further suggestions and aid. I'm not too new to audiophile but I never have owned my own full set up. Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advanced.

2 years, 2 months agorealandR3cys posted on trance.
June 4, 2017

I'd suggest looking at the Audio Technica M40X. It's currently going for $99, and is truly an awesome pair of study headphones. They will be more suited than the M50X, because the M50X features more unnecessary bass and treble, and the soundstage is also narrower. Comparatively, the M40X is more neutral and pleasant.

But, if you can splurge upto $145, just look no further than the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250 Ohm Version currently going for $144, and is like miles ahead of what the M40X/50X can offer you.

Pair the DT770 Pro with an amp like the Fiio A1 currently for $28, and you get a long term solution. Basically for just $50 more ($144 + $28), you're getting a solution that's head & shoulders above your all expectations!

I'd say with EDM in general, go for headphones with high detail/a slight treble boost and pronounced bass. A good 80-90 dollar headphone for this might be the ATH-M40x's, cheap, reliable, and a good sound.

Bass presence is important, but the magic of Trance is in its ambiance and synthesis, things that really come to light (in my opinion) with high quality upper-frequency recreation.

2 years, 3 months ago120z8t posted submission on WeAreTheMusicMakers.
May 9, 2017

I've noticed recently that some of the songs I've made sound really strange on some speakers, like the ones in my car, where the songs sound like they are in some kind of cavern. I have read that this could be because of the headphones used to produce music, as regular headphones tend to "beautify" the music instead of showing up their flaws, and I think that this is what is happening to me, because I'm using regular earphones from an unknown brand lol.

So I'm planning to buy new headphones in order to prevent this. I can afford around 100$ so I was thinking on buying the Sony MDR-7506, which I saw they have a great quality/price ratio.

What do you guys think? Should I buy them? What is your experience in this topic?

I have never used those but I do use Audio-Technica ATH-M40x and they work great for me. They are tuned flat, that is what you want.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone - Over ear.

Hello, Looking for headphones for my little bro. Will be used for gaming, would like detailed/direction of sound.

I'm undecided between Audio-Technica ATH-M40x or Sony MDRV6 would replace pads with these in the near future.

Would very much appreciate r/headphones opinion's or recommendation of another headphone before making a final choice.

Can you name these headphones? [R]

The Audio Technica ATH M40x is quite popular in that price range, however, they have been recommended with the Brainwavz HM5 Pads. Another option is the Sennheiser Urbanite(On Ear), which is a little bassier than the M40x, but, in my opinion, looks a little nicer. You can also do some browsing around the sub, and visit/comment on the Daily Purchase Advise thread.

Happy hearing!

If it makes you feel better, you can get better-sounding headphones than Bose for less money. The Audio-Technica ATH-M40X should blow anything Bose below $300 out of the water for just under $100, and if your budget is closer to $50 you can often find Sennheiser HD558s for around $50-60. The more you know!

For your need, I think Audio Technica ATH-m40x with Brainwavz hm5 hybrid angled.

Total cost for both of this are around $130 but they are worth it.

The m40x are faily nuetral with a little bump on the bass. The imaging are good. The soundstage are quite narrow before changing the pads but after chaing tha pads thay are great for a closed back. Isolation are great enough to be used at noisy place like in a train. Comfort are quite back due to the clamping force but it will be fix after changing tha pads.

I've never tried the ws770 and anc27x so I can't really say anything about them.

Hey everyone! My boyfriend is a big PC gamer and I have a question about headsets. He says his isn't working so well anymore and his birthday is coming up so I figured I would replace them. Well I'd like to get him a really nice headset, one that will last him a while and be good quality. I don't know very much about PCs at all (he does all my computer parts purchasing for me if I need anything) and obviously I can't just ask him or I would spoil the surprise.

If you guys aren't busy and could give me some tips on picking the best headset possible for him I'd really appreciate it! Only one thing is necessary, it has to be wireless. I'd like to look at the best quality options, I have a fairly high budget but I'm open to some cheaper options too if they're good quality!

Good luck, and, you're awesome for soliciting info like this, well done!!

Is active noise cancellation a requirement? Most sealed cans isolate noise well enough on their own, and the only noise cancelling headphone I've seen worth buying is the QC35, which is way over budget.

I'll throw out a recommendation for the M40X's. Definitely not perfect, but a good buy for the money. Extra money can be used towards nicer pads, Brainwavz HM5's being a common pairing.

it's just a suggestion, but headsets with an attached mic tend to be more for less. If you got a mod mic and something like m40x's you could get something on par if not better than something like the Senn 373Ds for like a hundred bucks less. which, if you want, you could use to buy some of these dank pads.

I don't know how extensive you guys have listened, or intricately you've studied the score, BUT I suggest you listen to the soundtrack with excellent headphones in a dark room.

I promise you that you will hear instruments you have never noticed rather than habitually singing along in your car. Try to hone in on specific instruments that underline the tone and lyrics, rather than the discourse.

There are hundreds of people who supply their talents to such an instrumental score (no pun intended :p).

Certain instruments are associated with characters and set their mood, along with ours, recurring throughout the play. It's quite fascinating how specific riffs continue to pop up throughout in order to represent the characters and their internal emotions.

You'll be surprised at how many discoveries you'll make. It completely advances the soundtrack, allows you to personalize your feelings with each song, and connects you to the body of work.

Comment with what you uncover!

I'm going to argue for the [M40's] (https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1487858186&sr=8-1&keywords=audio+technica+ath-m40) instead. I used the M50's for four years, and they really are excellent headphones. The M40's, however, are lighter and more comfortable to wear while sacrificing an almost negligible level of sound quality. Only the highest highs and the lowest lows are lost compared to the M50's, at frequencies that most human ears can't hear anyways. The most important factor, though, is the cost. You can save ~$50 with the M40's without really sacrificing anything (and gaining a little bit in comfort!)

There are a number of websites that offer comparisons between the two for more technical details. [Here] (http://headphones.specout.com/compare/3738-4482/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-vs-Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x) is one of them.

/r/edmproduction is a great place to start and to learn, but can be opinionated at times.

/r/AdvancedProduction is good for the complex, nitty-gritty stuff of production.

/r/whitelabels and /r/electronicmusic are good places to get your music heard, once you've had some experience.

A few personal words of advice:

Invest in some quality headphones. Audio Technica ATH-M40xs are inexpensive, durable, provide good sound, and have a 2-year warranty.

Don't spam your music, ever. If people aren't interested, you'll only come off as obnoxious.

Don't be afraid to use samples, loops, and bits of other's work, ESPECIALLY when studying another artist's style and experimenting.

Finally: backup, backup, backup. There's little more frustrating than losing your entire 150GB project folder because of a faulty surge protector or a spilled drink.

Good luck.

I personally have a pair of Cloud Cores that I think would be nice for him, but he told me to ask here for him since he doesn't know how to post or whatever, and wants to hear from more than one person.

So, suggestions anyone?

I'd second a lot of recommendations for separate components. Almost any microphone will last forever if it's not getting moved around a lot.

For headphones though, I bought some Audio Technica ATH-M40X a year and a half ago. They were one of the best purchases I've ever made. Absolute best bang for the buck out there. The M40s are considered a step down from the M50s, but I disagree. The 40s are tuned flatter and reproduce almost perfect audio, while the 50s give a slight boost to the bass. Here's an awesome video comparing the model line-up and another comparing the M40s against other brands.

The BIFL factor comes from a detachable cable. That way it can be replaced if necessary. Experiences with other headphones shows that it's almost always a bad cable that causes failure. Additionally, you can buy replacement ear pads as well. I've seen many a Bose owner with foam leaking from the ears (although, to be fair, those pads are replaceable too. The owners just don't know because if they knew about headphones, they would have bought some Audio Technicas or Sennheisers to begin with)

Maybe try getting him a nice set of headphones. Got both my parents a pair this year and did about 2 weeks of research. Found that closed back headphones (they don't leak sound so people don't hear what you're listening to / annoy others) is probably best.

I went with the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1481500389&sr=8-1&keywords=mx40

If you're a bit more open with the budget I would go with the mx50's: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1481500401&sr=8-1&keywords=mx50

These are some of the top rated headphones for the price, and your dollar is going to quality unlike branding with something like beats by dre (which just base boosts the sound). If he plays any instruments both types come with a jack to plug into a keyboard or guitar amp.

Personally I would love a set of the mx50s. I would suggest not going below an mx40 as the cord is not interchangable and its stuck at 3 meters in length.. way to long. where as the 40's and 50's have that as well as a 1.2m cable.

Not only can you use this for rec. but he can use it for mixing music

I'm not trying to totally splurge on him, anything under 100$ would be great. We've been together for 4 months.

Info about him/us:

  • He's 23, and works in retail as a PA/sound systems/ Dj equipment associate. He's really into sound quality

  • He's also into Yu-Gi-Oh cards. I've played a few games with him lol

  • Loves beer and hockey and video games

I've looked into getting him a gaming chair but they're so expensive :( any ideas? Thank you

Now that the Vive's been out for a while what are the best headphones to use for it? [R]

2 years, 9 months agoNov. 15, 2016

I'm hoping to use the Vive in a commercial application and will be giving lots of demos to people. Thus, I'm looking for over-the-ear headphones that cost downrange of $100, are noise canceling (the environment will be noisy and distracting, detracting from immersion) or noise reducing to whatever degree possible, and have decent enough sound.

People have had their Vive's for more than half a year now, so what has your experience been? Care to share?

2 years, 9 months agowordfountain posted on Vive.

ATH-M40X or ATH-M50X

Out of the box they are SUPER firm on your head, which makes them extremely uncomfortable after an hour or so, but for shorter demos they'll do an excellent job of blocking out outside sound while also sounding absolutely amazing inside the headphone. The ...'leather' (idk what it actually is, maybe leather?) that the ear muffs are made from would easily be cleaned with alcohol wipes, in case someone is worried about ear germs.

If you plan on giving longer demos, the 'tension' (ear-pressure) mechanism is in the head band. It's just a spring-steel bar. Bend it backwards (GENTLY! Small bends; nudge it till you get it right) will take the bite out of the headphones. They won't clamp as hard, but they'll be more comfortable long term.

I wanted to buy these headphones for a while and I've recently noticed that two 3rd party sellers sell them at a major discount, more than 50%.

However, both of these

a) Just launched, so there are no reviews.

b)Have really strange and shady names.

c)Have the exact same price for the product.

d)Come from Japan, which leads me to believe it's the same company.

So should I trust them? Will I be able to get a refund if they are, in fact, a fraud?

Abbreviating alternatives to MotP? [R]

2 years, 9 months agoOct. 30, 2016

Long story short, Muse changed my life. They literally carried me through shitty, long gone times years ago and have loved them ever since. I literally bought a pair of $100 Audio Technicas just to listen to Muse at a higher quality, and I'm the most stingy, cheap-ass person you could ever meet.

MotP specifically, is a song that still sends shivers down my spine. I don't know if it's the composition, the mix between rock guitars and synth, the amazing percussion, Matt's incredible vocals or the potent bass line. Of all Muse songs, it's the one that puts me in THE mood, even more than Citizen Erased, which is like the quintessential rock song to me.

So after all these years being an internet denizen, I've decided to finally stop my ever changing nickname spree and settle down with a name paying tribute to them, and I'd like it to be to this song. Most places I go have a 12 character limit, so I can't really write down ''Problematique''. I've though about ''MotP'' itself but damn if it isn't creative at all.

Any ideas guys? Thank you for your time and sorry for the long post :)

A few people are saying Cloud II, which I respect but don't honestly recommend. Having had bad experiences with headsets that utilize a USB connection, I recommend staying away from them. The original HyperX Cloud headset uses both a mic and audio jack and that's the only true headset I can honestly recommend.

I'd also suggest you look into other alternatives for audio though. Right now, as they're on sale, I'd highly recommend the Audio Technica ATH-M40x since it's on sale on Amazon right now. I'd also recommend getting an Antlion ModMic. I have the 4.0 Omnidirectional and I can't recommend it enough, the sound quality on it is absolutely fantastic

as others stated, gaming headsets are generally not the best here. get a decent pair of headphones, made by an actual headphone company and a mic and you will have 10x better sound than so called gaming headsets.

your best bet is probably ATH M40x headphones, $89 on amazon at the moment https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54

and a VModa BoomPro Mic for $29 https://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Gaming-Headset-Headphone/dp/B00BJ17WKK/ref=pdsim267_12?

just plug the mic into the hedphones instead of the cord that came with the M40s and there you go. headphones when you just want headphones, and a full headset when you want that.

there is also the m50x for a bit more money at $139, though honestly i dont think its worth the extra money. especially just for playing games and basic listening from a computer or phone or something.
https://www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-M50X-Headphones-Portable-Amplifier/dp/B01D6FKDT8/ref=sr13?

there are also m30x that are only $69. but YOU DO NOT WANT THESE! these are cheaper than the m40, but these do not have the removable cable like the 40s and 50s do, meaning adding a mic will be more expensive/challenging as you cant just plug the $30 vmoda one in and be good to go. so dont be tempted by the $20 savings on these> https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M30x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUQW8/ref=sr11?

i own the m40x and the m50x as well as several far more expensive pairs of headphones and i can assure you it is hard to find much better sound, comfort and features for the price than you get with the the 40/50x. especially the removable cable, that is missing from my pairs that cost 6 times as much as the 40's.

Headphones/Monitors Help [R]

2 years, 11 months agoOutlinedApe posted submission on edmproduction.
Aug. 26, 2016

I've seen and heard that acoustic treatment of your room is important but for me that's not currently possible.

Therefore I was wondering would monitors still be the best option for mixing or good headphones like beyerdynamics?

Just bonus info, the monitors would be in front of a window but facing a large blank wall behind me a couple of metres away (which I'm not allowed to do anything to) however the room does have 3 carved in corners if that makes sense.

Thanks

2 years, 11 months agoOutlinedApe posted on edmproduction.
Aug. 27, 2016

okay, so if you cant get good room treatment, headphones is the way to go while mixing. Just get something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HVLUR54/ref=s9simhgwg267i2r?ie=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pfrdm=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pfrds=&pfrdr=G86VC8J4WKRYYWQ3RN71&pfrdt=36701&pfrdp=6aad23bd-3035-4a40-b691-0eefb1a18396&pfrd_i=desktop

I really recommend that you have some speakers though, just to listen to regular stuff because headphones could get annoying after a while. never use speakers to mix if you dont have room treatment though :)

Recommendations on Over-Ear headphones based purely on comfort? [R]

I've googled plenty of top 10 lists on comfort and best headphones (knowing comfort is incorporated into rating), but I can't help but notice these sites are affiliates of at least 1 site.

What are your recommendations/what do you use? Audio quality isn't important to me, just as long as they drown out the noise in the office :-)

I just got some Audio-Technica headphones, this one I think, and I like them. I wear glasses so my main concern was them not hurting my ears with my glasses on. Normally my ears start to hurt after an hour or so. But not with these! So I imagine without glasses they'd be even better.

Recommendations for an affordable pair of practice headphones. [R]

3 years agoAug. 12, 2016

Lately I've been finding my practice time pushed back later into the the night. But with two kids I cant play very loud, and it's effecting my practicing as I'm forced to keep the volume so low (small house with paper walls) it's difficult to even hear what I'm playing. I've tried using my computer headset, but it sounds like complete crap. My earbuds aren't much better.

So can anyone recommend an affordable (sub$100) pair of headphones I can use. They don't need to be studio accurate or anything, just capable of carrying the lower frequencies without sounding like boomy mud. Thanks in advance

Philips CityScape Uptowns - Question about build quality [R]

Aug. 5, 2016

Hi!

I have been browsing for a new pair of on-the-go/commuting headphones for when i start at Uni, and need to take train and bus for around 2.5 hours a day. I fell in love with the CityScape Uptowns, even more so when i saw the reviews. But i started to worry as they have a critical flaw in the cable, making the sound unbalanced and noisy.

My question is, do any of you guys have experience with these cans? Can it be fixed? And do you know any headphones as good-looking and sounding for the price?

Thanks in advance

m40x - $75-100

-cheaper, under $100 pretty good bang for your buck

-fairly old model with 40mm drivers and no bass port

-somewhat flat sound signature

-closed style headphones, detachable audio cable

-all plastic construction with use of fake leather (can get warm for long listening)

-I noticed a slight lack in the mid to low bass in terms of detail. Other than that the sound quality is quite impressive for the price

m70x - $200-250

-better build quality using metal, and I think real leather (still odd choice to have a plastic headband top)

-very flat sound signature

-very detailed sound considered to be a true monitor headphone, some say too bright for a relaxing listening session

-45mm drivers

-closed headphones, detachable audio cable

Curious about some headphones that are quality, but in the 50-60usd price range? [R]

I changed only a couple of things.

No thermal paste, absolutely no need. Wouldn't see a difference unless you are custom watercooling. The CPU cooler comes with some.

cheaper motherboard. doesn't really make any difference.

Doubled your RAM for only $15

256GB 950 Pro + 500 GB 850 EVO. Not quite as much storage as the 1TB 850EVO, but the 950 Pro is simply astonishingly fast.

Changed the MSI R9 390 to a XFX one, same speed, but $30 cheaper.

The case comes with 2 fans, which is probably enough already. Added a third fan, just because. I would personally go with one higher quality fan vs 2 cheaper ones. Less noise.

I would not buy a gaming headset. They all suck. The Audi-Techica ATH-M40x are amazing for under $100. Much better all around sound experience.

All-in-all $6 cheaper for double the RAM, much faster storage (but only 750GB vs 1TB), and much better headphones.

If you're focusing just on music, pretty much any Pioneer headphones are fantastic, but I personally prefer the shape and style of the Panasonic DJ headphones. I still have my old Technics 1200 model, which is essentially identical to the Panasonic 1250 remake.

Edit: I just happened across these Audio-Technica headphones on sale, a cheaper alternative to Pioneers but pretty much the same style. I've heard a lot of good things about A-T headphones so these might be worth checking out too

How to stay on pitch when doing covers? [R]

3 years, 5 months agoRookieCookieMonster posted submission on singing.
March 3, 2016

Hi guys,

Whenever I do covers (Acapella - and not in a professional setting), I have noticed that I can never seem to remain consistent on pitch. I always tend to go flat.

Does anyone have any tips as to how I can remain on pitch consistently when doing covers?

Thanks

3 years, 5 months agoRookieCookieMonster posted on singing.
March 3, 2016

You can try just using your hand to redirect the sound waves from your mouth towards your ear, or you can try just closing one ear with a finger or hand. Sometimes you see people do it when they are doing licks or runs for pitch precision.

In terms of equipment, yes this is why musicians in studios wear headphones while singing. They can hear the background music and monitor their vocals as they are being recorded.

Equipment:

Audio-Technica AT2020USB PLUS Cardioid Condenser USB Microphone

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B5ZX9FM/ref=wlitdpopdSttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=22NJSL3TGXXEH&coliid=I2ZQ8TLHXXM7FL

Rode NT-USB USB Condenser Microphone

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KQPGRRE/ref=wlitdpopCnSttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=22NJSL3TGXXEH&coliid=I2XMC8MD4Q3FO8

One of those USB microphones with built in headphone monitors should work for you. The Rode has better sound quality and comes with a pop filter. The Audio Technica is cheaper, comes with no pop filter, and is slightly bassy sounding. You will probably want a microphone stand and a decent pair of headphones as well.

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr11?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1457017838&sr=1-1&keywords=Audio+Technica+m40x

These headphones are really nice and neutral sounding. Close-eared for good recording. The more expensive m50x actually are less neutral and will give a little bit of bass coloring to music.

Edit: If you start doing regular covers this will work well for that as well. You can download the audio files from youtube karaoke videos and then play them using Audacity as you record and monitor your vocals. Audacity is a free recording program that lets you also edit all your tracks. If you play instruments these microphones will do fine with those as well, but you'll have to be careful about placement and room reflections/modes/background noise etc.

Decent sleek, portable and closed cans for sub-150€? [R]

3 years, 5 months agosolduios posted submission on ZReviews.
March 2, 2016

Hi there.

I've been looking for a pair of closed-back headphones for myself and the girlfriend to have as an alternative for our set of K712s/HD558s for a while, mostly in case one of us wants to watch something on the TV or is in the midst of another skype call while we're both active in the living room.

This'd be use scenario 1 - scenario 2 would be for her to be able to take them to the office, hence why a sleek build and removable cable would be preferred.

Musical preferences are mostly around progressive trance music, and a warm and comfy bass is very beneficial, although it doesn't need to have a tonne of impact behind it (hence why I'm shying away from the Brainwavz HM9 in particular, whereas the HM5 just seems way too bulky for either of us).

As for the level of isolation, we don't need it to be super strong, but a medium level of isolation would be good to have (i.e. dampen the environment so much that it doesn't fuck with the music, as opposed to completely blacking out everything - if I was to give it a numeric value, I guess I'm thinking 3/5?).

Now obviously if I go look around on the internet, everyone's screaming for me to buy the ATH-m50s but really.. since we're looking for something more warm, and from what Zeos' burning passion against them tells me that this is probably not what we're looking for.

To conclude:

  • portably sized (carrying bag?)

  • over-ear (although on-ear would be tolerable)

  • not too bulky (we don't have particularly big ears)

  • closed back (no full isolation needed, but noticeable dampening required)

  • below or around 150€ price point (~$160, ~1300 SEK)

  • easy to power, since portable/partially for use at work (possibly considering a FiiO E17k/E18 later down the road though - home use will be with Aune X1s or Xonar U7 depending on whose turn it is)

  • warm sound preference; comfy bass beneficial but nothing too boomy

  • preferably sleek looks (think Sennheiser Urbanite)

  • preferably replaceable pads

EDIT: Apparently, somehow, the swedes are managing to sell Momentum 2.0 on-ears for 1300-1600 SEK each ($150-185), so I think we're settled. I don't understand this magic, but I do like seeing it.

Anyone here produces/composes mostly on headphones? [R]

Most people use their monitors while writing a song and use the headphones mostly for correction/mastering.

I'm just wondering if there are producers out there who prefer to compose on headphones and later use the monitors to "see how it sounds".

I'm guessing it might be a bit counterproductive? Just wondering how you feel about it.

I mix with headphones and a subpac.

The subpac is crucial for mixing the low end, as most headphones aren't going to give you much help below 50hz.

Back in an office for the first time in a while. Temporary/indefinite working situation directly next to two others and one is an expressive type (sing, hum, talk to self). He's nice, so I don't want to be rude or ask him to stop.

Looking for a recommendation on headphones or earphones that will block out the following:

  1. Humming
  2. Singing
  3. Talking
  4. The poorly-insulated cheap headphones of others
  5. Tapping
  6. (Optional) cackling

Must cost less than therapy and sound okay. But I'd be willing to endure 1975-era 8-track quality music if I could block everything else.

These are the ones I use (Audio Technica ATH-M40x). While they're not noise canceling, they block out standard office background noises very well. I wear glasses and they're super comfortable for hours. While these are not as good as the M50x version, they're the best if you're looking to buy headphones for < $100

I have the ATH-M40x, and they're pretty great. They aren't noise-canceling, but the sound quality is really good, and if you've got music going, you can't really hear much else around you. A big audiophile friend of mine (gets headsets sent to him by Sennheiser for reviews, etc) told me these are probably the best if you're a "I don't want to spend $1000 on headphones" kind of person.

Welcome to the daily purchase help thread

Requesting purchase advice

This is the only place in /r/audiophile where you can request purchase advice. Since we don't want to arbitrarily discriminate, it doesn't matter if your budget is $50 or $50 000, or whether you're inquiring about vintage or new - your question goes here.

If you want to ask a gear purchase question, it's of help if you read this guide first.

Headphone-related question?

While we will not remove headphone-related questions from this thread, it is highly suggested that you use the /r/headphones sticky thread instead - that post contains both guides and other good recommendations, and you'll be asking an audience whose primary interest is in headphones.

Recording-related question?

While we won't remove questions about microphones or recording gear either, you'll be much better off asking in the /r/audioengineering sticky thread, after you've studied their getting started guide.

Proposed systems

In an effort to cut down on some of the repetitive questions, here is the absolutely cheapest system we are willing to recommend.

Answering questions?

It would be helpful if you sort the thread by new.

3 years, 7 months agoUmlautica posted on audiophile.
Dec. 27, 2015

You'll probably get better answers on /r/headphones but in your price range, I would look at a good set of headphones and a separate mic which would still requires you to use a slitter.

Given a bit more budget, you might look at Blue (desktop) or ModMic (attachable) mics in the $40 price range.

They are tuned flat to get the most accurate sound reproduction, and so you can EQ them to your preferred settings. (they do sound great by default though)

Compared to the ATH-M50 or ATH-M50X they don't come with as much bass, which could be a good or bad thing depending on what you like. You can see the difference here: https://youtu.be/sj69-mWHV3E?t=106 (compare the blue (M40X) and the green (M50X))

I'm a 22yo student that, like many here, runs around like a toddler starting 6 different things before I realize I got up. Not so great when I'm supposed to be sitting at my computer working.

Recently I've been using over-ear headphones when working at home to tune out distracting sounds, but they've actually been helping me most in a different way.

Since they're wired, they physically attach me to the project I'm working on.

When I use speakers for music, I'm soon up and cleaning, or starting a craft, or looking for my fuzzy socks.

When I have headphones on, I have to actively take the big bulky things off and move the cord out of my way, giving me a moment of "oh wait, I don't need to go do that right now. I need to do this."

And if I forget I have them on, I embarrassingly get yanked back to my work like a dog on a leash. Point taken, evil earsound muffs.

This small epiphany had helped me sit still for final projects right now, so maybe it will help some other fidgety people too! :)

The audio technica ath-m40x would be perfect for him. Portable enough to be taken on the subway, while also boasting a good neutral sound signature for the stuff he listens to. It's also exactly 100USD.

The only gripes with the M40X is that they might be a bit uncomfortable if he has larger ears, but that can be solved if you are willing to drop twenty on aftermarket pads.

The NVX XPT100 is also very very good, but they will look a bit dorky in public. Fantastic for comfort though.

If you don't have monitors, the suggestion I usually see is to mix it on a set of speakers/headphones that you trust (i.e., know how they sound) and then play that mix in various different settings (i.e., in a car, in a home stereo system, wherever you can) and take notes on what sounds good and what sounds bad. It's a little more troublesome, but it's probably the best way to mix without quality gear.

To clarify what I mean about mixing first into headphones that you can trust: first listen to some of your favorite music on those headphones and pay attention to how everything sounds, then try to re-create that sound/balance in your own tracks.

Alternatively, you can find studio monitor headphones quite cheaply, I know the aht-m40 from audio-technica is pretty quality and goes for about $100.

They are great quality for the price and what they are. I personally have the Nessie and for $100 I couldn't ask for more from a usb mic. With the Razer mouse,I would say look around a bit more before getting it. I've heard many times Razer equipment breaks quite frequently. But if i could add my opinion here's a 144hz 24'' monitor for $60 less http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009642&nmmc=AFC-C8Junction&cmmmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC--na--na--na&cmsp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= . You almost managed to follow the format. Picking a headphone also heavily relies on what kind of sound signature you are looking for. A very good headphone that fulfills all criteria you mentioned is the Audio Technica ATH M40X

The CAL2! are not as good as the original version of the headphone. So if you want something with a heavy bass the CAL! has a cleaner sound.

For brands like JBL,KRK and Focal I only have to say...buy their speakers, fuck their headphones.

Hmm, they have a pretty unique sound signature, but some good closed back headphones in that price range are the M40xs: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1434932023&sr=8-1&keywords=m40x Great neutral sound, but comfort is pretty poor. Another option would be CAL!2s, a nice bass oriented headphone that doesn't sacriffice mids or highs: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Aurvana-Headset-Drivers--Line/dp/B00FC2R7ZC/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&qid=1434932208&sr=8-1&keywords=creative+aurvana+live+2

I'm replacing my broken Panasonic budget cans and I need something closed (no leaking), durable, and under $100. Specifically, I need something that will not break if thrown around a little (3 cats + bad cable management and a rolling chair) like my Panasonics did and my Monoprice 8323s before that. Also, I'd love an upgrade in sound quality. The Sony MDR-7506s are a no go for me, they're just not comfortable and sound... I guess light is the proper word. The ATH-M40x sounds incredible and is very comfortable from the 15 minutes I spent listening to a friend's pair. However, I'm not sure that is my best path. Here's what I'm considering:

Am I completely off track with this? Am I leaving out any great-value durable, closed, comfortable, neutral <$100 headphones?

Edit: Forgot usage - mostly classic rock and various electronic (especially chiptunes), with some gaming mixed in, wearing for long periods of time.

Hello all. I am looking for a new headset to use when gaming on my PC. Up until recently I haven't really used headphones and have opted to text chat in games most of the time. Recently though I have been using a headset to communicate. The headset that I currently own are the turtle beach x12's but after a few hours of using them my head hurts so bad due to the headset and my glasses. The headsets quality also leaves a lot to be desired from a sound aspect, when I'm in a game and little sound is happening there is a faint buzzing sound.

So I'm looking for a new headset to use on PC, preferably one that is built with glasses users in mind for optimal comfort while using them

Okay, so it looks like I'm getting a pair of M40x!

My last question about them is: where should I buy them?

They're on amazon for $99, just the headphones, cords and bag

[Then there's this $99 bundle with a $30 amp (I plan to sell it, I know that an amp won't do much with these headphones)] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NLHBZ30/ref=cmswrawdtYravb16479AK/)

[Finally, there's this $109 bundle with a $40 amp] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00T58SB18/ref=cmswrawdzZravb132AM6Y)

Is there a better deal somewhere else? I plan to sell the bundled amp for about $25, so hopefully I'll get the headphones for about $75.

Also, I'm looking to add suggestions and bring attention to my poll on massdrop for entry level headphones that are less than $100! Any suggestions that you have are welcome!

Good, cause you're definitely gonna get one separate. First, watch the first two of this series of videos by Tek Syndicate. For your price point, I'd recommend the Audio Technica ATH-M40X. Budget - $80 - $120

Source - PC/Android

Isolation - I live in NYC, so isolation is important

Preferred type - Over ear

Preferred tonal - I like bass but not at the expense of drowning out the other ranges

Past headphones - Mostly cheap earbuds and a pair of Sennheiser HD 202 II's which I find to be just okay. They also get pretty warm on the ears.

Preferred music - Hip Hop and electronic with some indie pop mixed in.

The headphones I'm most considering are:

Audio-Technica ATH-M40x

V-MODA Crossfade M-80

Budget $100

Source PC, HTC One M8

Requirements for Isolation I plan on purchasing an antlion modmic to go along with the headphones, so enough sound isolation so that anyone I'm in a call with is unable to hear my computer's sound. I also listen to a lot of music on the bus to and from school.

Preferred Type of Headphone Preferably full-sized, though on-ear may be fine.

Preferred tonal balance I'm not particularly knowledgeable here, though I think I would like an overall balanced sound.

Past headphones Right now I use a pair of Turtle Beach x12's while on my computer and the stock HTC earbuds with my phone.

Preferred Music Things like this, pretty much anything by alt-j, as well as the pixies. So basically alt rock.

Other Stuff I'd like for the headphones to be comfortable for extended periods of time on my larger-than-average head. Also, if possible, I'd really like for the headphones to have a removable cable. So far, I've primarily been considering the ATH-M40x, though I've heard that Audio Technica's M series is a bit overhyped. Would they be a bad decision overall?

Any idea what I should go for?

Other - For casual use, also listening to podcasts/books. This will be my first quality set.

BUDGET: $75-$100 (Slightly flexible)

SOURCE: Phone, Laptop, PS4

ISOLATION: I don't mind outside noise since I'll be using them at home exclusively but at the same time I don't want to bother my wife if she's in the same room as me.

TYPE: I think I'd prefer Over- Ear but On-Ear could work also since I probably won't be using them for more than 30 minutes at a time (busy dad).

TONAL BALANCE: I have no idea. I don't think I've ever owned headphones that cost more than $10 from Walmart. I know I don't like a ton of bass.

PAST HEADPHONES: Like I said before I've never owned decent headphones. Right now I'm using the ear buds that came with my Galaxy S4.

PREFERRED MUSIC: Tool, Pink Floyd, APC, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins and sometimes a little electronic music like Uppermost and Digitalism.

I'm mainly just going to use these to listen to music while I veg out on the couch with my eyes closed. I like to be able to pick out the individual instruments throughout an entire song but I'm not sure what kind of headphones I need to be able to do that. I have no idea what neutral, warm, etc. mean at all. I'd also like something that's super comfortable and would also consider on-ear as I probably won't be using them very much in one sitting.

After some searching I'm considering these ATH-M40x

Thank you for any help.

Look for the original ATH-M50 for around $80 USD refurbished, or a new M40x. The newer models are awesome but rise above your budget by a bit, with not too huge of a performance difference. The Sennheiser HD419's are a great deal right now, and are nice, sexy, and comfy, albeit with a fragile headband. 439's and 449's are also good budget options, especially on sale like they are now. Sony's MDR-7506 is a phenomenal industry-standard pair but might be a little more clinical than she'd like, as they have a mid-range boost for monitoring pro audio. MDR-V6 is a tad warmer and more musical, but just as detailed. Also good to note that the sony's are pretty much indestructible, and fold and bend nicely while the sennheisers can't bend much at all.

Investing in some nice headphones. Any suggestions? [R]

Investing in some headphones for music at work. What do you suggest? Bose? Beats by dre? I mostly listen to house, electronic, & trance. I work 10 hours shifts at a computer in spreadsheets all day so I like to get in the zone. Currently just using iPod headphones. I'm not sure if I want noise cancelation or not as I don't want my coworkers to have to poke me to get my attention.

This is just completely off the top of my head, but there are the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x's , on sale for $99 on amazon. I only have experience with the ATH-M50's but if they're comparable I'd recommend them. Another thing that I've heard good things about are the Sennheriser HD 280 PRO's. Stat wise, the 280 PROs supposedly have a lower base range, but in practice that could mean anything.

Since I haven't used either, I have no idea what they'll end up like and can't recommend either, but I hope that's a pretty good starting place. If you can, try them out and figure which you like more. Under that 100 limit, your choices really start to drop off in terms of actual quality.

Also, just final word, I'd seriously get a second opinion on this. I'm not the best person to ask about headphone quality, I just figured I throw some links your way since I saw there wasn't really anything here before. I hope what I've given you helps, but the best place to ask might be Head-fi.org. Good luck!

Welcome to the bi-weekly post for folks to request gear recommendations.

Low-cost gear and purchasing recommendation requests have become common in the AE subreddit. There is also great repetition of models asked about and advised for use. This weekly post is intended to assist in centralizing and answering requests and recommendations.

Audio Technica ATH M40x or ATH M50x are both stellar and can hang with headphones that cost hundreds more.

Some people like to buy the combo, DAC + AMP, the cheapest, yet very good, are Magini + Modi.

Recently, they released the new Audio-Technica ATH-M40x (2014 Version) - $99 on Amazon. People say that this is "the new M50x", because nowadays the price/performance of the m50x is getting lower (ATH raised the price), people say that performance and quality of this new one is very good. I myself am thinking of getting this M40x.

A bombastic deal for you would be this one, M40x (2014 Version) + FiiO E6 Portable AMP, then later you can get the DAC + AMP for your PC if you feel the need. Too bad I don't live in the US, and I'll be traviling only on JAN/2015, hope this deal continues, I'd get it instantly... =(

Headphones. What do you use? What should I buy on a budget (under 100)? [R]

Agreed. I use these and they are amazing, and fit the current price range if OP doesn't want to wait.
