A laptop that can hold Adobe softwares (After Effect, Premier Pro and Photoshop mostly), some 3D softwares (3DSMax and Fusion 360) and games for between 750 - 800€ (875 - 933$), and that is on Windows [R]

First of all, I know my budget is kinda small, but I don't need a beast, since I've already got a powerful PC, but I really need a laptop for when I'm not at home.

I talked about Adobe softwares because those can be really demanding, especially AE, as for the 3D ones, I don't make overly complicated thing (it's mostly for 3D print things).

When I talk about game, I don't think Star Citizen but more like Oxygen Not Included, Terraria or Age of Empire II, so I don't think it would require much power, but I'd rather be safe and mention it.

As for the OS part, I don't like Macs, and I can't use it properly anyway, and Linux can't run Adobe and Autodesk softwares.

So yeah, that's all... I though about a Asus FX502VD-DM173, but I'm open to any suggestion !

Games listed above, settings and FPS at best but it's not my main focus

i am not sure how much color accuracy you need for photoshop but that laptop is really low spec for the money.

something like the dell inspiron or the acer nitro 5 will be much better especially with a gtx 1050ti 4gb and 8-16gb of ram.

you can add some ram later on and an ssd if you like in a couple months for a 100$.

this one looks good two:

i would also say that gaming is not important to you so an i7 cpu is really going to make a huge difference in those apps so don't go for an i5 if you can.

I'm a total noob at tech in general, so bear with me, I can't get technical.

The laptop shouldn't be too heavy, as I'd need to carry it to college everyday. The games I'm looking at play are - CS GO , DotA 2, GTA V, Witcher 3, FIFA 17, Doom, Fortnite at as high as settings as possible. As I live in a tropical country and the air conditioning wont be on the whole time, I'd want it to have good cooling. The keyboard should be responsive for fast typing. Mousepad quality doesn't matter as I'd be using an external mouse. Good battery life is also needed. the laptop also must have good screen brightness so to use it outside or with the lights on with ease. And it must be fairly dust resistant as well. I have had issues with my previous laptop's vents and err.. insides, getting riddled with dust and it was frankly a pain in the ass.

What about the Acer Nitro 5? It comes in at $899 brand new on Amazon. Here's a link to it. GTX 1050 Ti should be able to play all of those games with good FPS, probably not on the highest settings, but you'd need a better GPU for that which I don't think you'll be able to find in your budget unless you get lucky with a refurb sale somewhere.

  • Total budget and country of purchase:
  • $800-900
  • USA

  • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    • Best Specs For The Money
  • Will it last 3 or more years with no issues?

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Weight - KINDA (I don’t want a 20lbs laptop)
  • Thinness - Prefer thicker laptops as they have better cooling features

  • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    • Windows
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • Anything above 15.6” with good viewing angles would cool
  • Good resolution (1080p preferred) but the more the better I suppose

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Video Editing: After Effects + Element 3D & Sony Vegas
  • Photo Editing: Photoshop (Light Usage) Enough to make YT banners and AVIs.

  • Games: Overwatch, CS:GO, Fortnite, All Call of Duty Games

  • I plan on being able to record in game cinematics in 60fps/1080p.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Games: Overwatch, CS:GO, Fortnite, All Call of Duty Games.
  • 60fps or higher will suit me.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Keyboard: As long as it is not junk. I like a keyboard you can “feel” like you typed something on.
  • Build Quality: I want it to last at least 3 or more years.

  • Touch Screen/Optical Drive/Finger Print Scanner: No use

  • Good IO is important! The more USBs and ports the better!

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Upgradable RAM and storage is VERY important. I plan on doing those upgrades within 1 year of purchase.

For graphic design you will need a powerful processor preferably an i7 quad core, above 8 GB RAM (16 GB is nice), a solid graphics card and of course, good storage is always important. It is also paramount that if you will be doing this intensively, then you get a laptop with a decent heat management system that will ensure that heat doesn't affect the performance of your laptop while completing important projects.

This list will help you to pick. It has the best laptops for gaming and high performance in various budget ranges.

Personally, I really like this Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51-72HL with the i7 processor that will give you a real advantage in the likes of video editing and other 3D works.

Laptop up to about $800 US, VM's, light gaming and coding. No screen preference. [R]

  • Total budget and country of purchase: I would prefer not to spend more than $800 USD. If there is some fantastic deal for 836.43

  • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs are of primary importance to me.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very. I need it to fit in a Goruck GR2 backpack laptop slot, but other than that no preference.

  • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I prefer Windows, though I plan on dual booting Linux for fun.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. VM's are gonna be my big energy suck(in school for Cybersecurity + am a nerd), but I do play fortnite from time to time, and occasionally do very crappy video editing.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play fortnite, and uh... tetris.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keyboard would be nice, but not necessary, want to be able to muck around in the guts of the thing if possible. (My last laptop wouldn't let me dual boot or mess with the bios without a ton of jerry rigging, which was annoying. )

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Occasionally play 10 hour youtube videos to annoy my housemates. I don't believe that there are any particular hardware requirements for that though. Thanks!

Check out the Acer Nitro 5 as it would suit your needs well

  • 15.6" IPS
  • Intel Core i7 7th Gen 7700HQ 2.8GHz
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti
  • 8GB Memory
  • 1TB HDD Windows 10

This laptop has the CPU power needed for VMs. It has a powerful GPU which will allow you to play fortnite well. It should fit in your backpack as well without being much of a burden. My only issue is the lack of an SSD
