Exercise ball as a chair? [R]

3 months, 1 week agoSew_much_fernet posted submission on sewing.
Nov. 10, 2019

Does anyone sew on an exercise ball? I’m 40 weeks pregnant and super comfortable on my exercise ball lately. And now I’m wondering if I can “repurpose” my exercise ball as a sewing chair since I’m currently without a dedicated sewing chair.

Am I crazy for thinking it would work?

Has anyone found a good butt cushion? [R]

3 years agokyeks posted submission on ITCareerQuestions.
Feb. 9, 2017

So I have been a developer and systems admin for 7 years, and as you all know, this job can require a lot of sitting. I frequently have problems with butt fatigue which can really make things uncomfortable, even going as far as making a convertible standing desk to help out. Has anyone found a good butt cushion to not cause pain after more than 5 hours of sitting? I have tried Coccyx Orthopedic cushions, car 'bucket seat' like cushions, stadium seat cushions, and they all work for a day, then right back to hitting new pressure points.

I used to sit on one of the big exercise balls but found it limited my movement between monitors and when people would come up to my desk. Found the perfect solution:

I've been using it for two weeks and don't have back pain anymore or hip pain! Well worth it.

Tax returns are upon us and I want to invest in a comfortable gaming chair. Your body is just as important as your build and I was just curious to see what the race has to say about good chairs that I could possibly shop for. I'm looking for something on the larger side. I'm 6 feet tall and 190 pounds. Thanks for any input!

Beware the yoga ball [R]

On the advice of my chiropractor, got a big yoga ball for my office. It really did help my hips. And it was kinda neat, compared to a boring chair. There was, however, one downside.

It echos farts, rather than muffling them like a normal chair. Not terribly compatible with third trimester digestive system. At least my office mate is chill--she just laughed. Lesson learned.

It's really hard choosing between all the various chairs on the market.

What I need in a chair is padded adjustable arms, lumbar support, and adjustable tilt.

I view this as similar to buying a mattress. I sit for extended periods of time and need a good chair that provides support for my posture.

Any recommendations?

Desk neck [R]

How do you guys deal with the soreness that comes from sitting at a desk all day?

I recently started interning and I've been having awful neck pain. I'm in very good shape(rugby, lifting) and my posture is pretty good I think. But I still go home sore even after 4 hour shifts.

Any help?

I bought one of these, which prevents my ass from sinking into the normal mesh office chair shit that every damn company ever now has. If you DGAF about what you look like, your ass, back, and likely your neck will feel much better. And since this shit has a base, you won't go rolling off of it like a big giant yoga ball. We've got one of those in a spare cube here...tried...did not like.

The main point of this post is to highlight the studies that show the detrimental effects of sitting, and summarise the fixes.

What do I do about it?

  • Get up regularly, even if it means setting a timer at your desk to walk down the hall a couple of times.
  • Stand every time the phone rings in your office, even if it means you have to sit back down to do something at your computer for the call.
  • Every hour, independent of getting up for regular walks:
    • Sit at the front edge of the chair, hands resting on thighs and body in a relaxed position—not too slouched or sitting up too straight. Take a slow breath in through your nose, feeling your ribs expand. Then slowly, fully exhale as if you are sighing out and exhale more than you typically would, without forcing or straining. Inhale on a 3-4 count, exhale on a 6-8 count, then pause for a couple of seconds. Re-inhale and repeat for 4-5 breaths.
    • Staying in this position at the front edge of the chair, reach one arm forward, alternating between sides, allowing your trunk and torso to rotate as well. Your hips and pelvis should also shift such that your thighs are alternately sliding forward and back. Perform 10 times on each side, slowly and deliberately and while taking slow, full breaths.
  • Consider using your chair differently, depending on the task:
    • When doing work on the computer, sit with the lowest part of your low back (i.e. sacrum) against the seat back, but don’t lean your upper body back.
    • When doing general work such as going through papers, moving things around your desk, filing, etc., sit forward on your chair so that you are more at the edge of the chair.
    • When reading items or reviewing paperwork, recline back with full back contact to give your muscles, joints and discs a rest.

If you're not looking for anything particularly luxurious try a yoga ball. They're cheap as shit and can be used as a foot rest as well. They're also easy to move and store and super good for your posture (I guess).

They even make a special yoga ball chair if you're interested.

Howdy folks.

It's 1:52am as I write this. I sit at my desk frustrated after being unable to sleep! To make matters even more interesting, my chair has decided that the hydraulics in it will no longer function. Due to this, I am playing a game of how-long-can-i-sit-at-90-degrees-before-my-quads-fail. I estimate another ~15 minutes.

I need a new chair. What do you all sit in?!
