Plex TV - Is an External Antenna an absolute must? [R]

2 months agoMowMdown posted submission on PleX.
Feb. 14, 2020

Simply question - got a quote to fit an external antenna, coming in at around £140.

Is an external antenna an absolute must, as I live fairly close to the nearest tower (~20 miles probably), or could an internal one work just fine?

Edit: closest transmitter is less than 10 miles away.

Looking for a solid indoor antenna to pick up local stations reliably [R]

Dec. 15, 2019

Hello cordcutters, the time has come and my cable is soon to be no more. I just need some recommendations for a solid antenna. The TV is on the second floor and there are not many large buildings or obstructions around my area.

I've found a large selection of indoor antennas on Amazon and other sites. According to AntennasDirect, TVFool and the DTV Reception Map for my address on the FCC website, most of the local channels we want are in good range. It looks like the broadcasting towers are 20 miles northeast, UHF and VHF, and those are the local stations we want most. They are in the green category on the FCC website. There are other channels 50 miles away.

Here is a list of the antennas I'm considering so far: Clearstream Eclipse, Winegard FL5500A, Flatwave FL-5000. It's hard to choose one, but I've picked up so far that the mile ratings don't matter as much as having clear line of sight. Most of the channels I want are 20 miles away.

I welcome all advice. We have a Fire Stick and stream often so it would be nice to compliment it with free HD channels.

I'm about 20 miles away and have this one from Amazon (also great return policy). There are others with higher ratings, but all around $25. I get 23 channels chrystal clear including Fox and 4 of its sub channels. Have it attached to a Tablo so I can DVR and stream it on any tv. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IF70QCW/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_wHU9DbC8X8GB8

Outdoor antenna to pickup ABC? [R]

Nov. 24, 2019

Hello fellow cord cutters,

Has anyone used an outdoor antenna to be able to pickup ABC (WPVI, 6)? Recently got one of those indoor flat antennas which I’m returning since it doesn’t pick up ABC. Thinking about putting an antenna on the roof to get that channel. But before going through the work and running coax into the house, just want to know if anyone has had luck using outdoor antennas to pick up that specific channel, since I know it’s notoriously difficult to get that channel via antenna. Located in South Philly. Thanks!

Can't speak to outdoor antenna but I have this indoor one and it picks up ABC (WPVI-HD 6.1): 1byone Digital Amplified Indoor HD TV Antenna

That said, I'm in Fairmount and 20 floors up so it probably helps.

Have you checked the FCC coverage map to see if ABC has strong coverage in your area: https://www.fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps

Been using just streaming services. Now, I want to try an antenna. Any assistance much appreciated. [R]

I never thought an indoor flat antenna would work for me. Stucco house, foil faced plywood/tile roof, big hill and power lines towards the towers. I'm getting 21 channels clear as Dish provider. Just face it at 209 degrees on wall or cabinet and should work fine. Cheap way to test it. ($25 at Amazon). I bought this one. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IF70QCW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_u2rDDbBD483K9

I can't really put my finger on it. I don't know if it's the uninteresting houseguests, the boring gameplay where no one seems to have any fucking balls, the flop twists, the house theme, the crowded-looking HOH room, but this season is just not very interesting to me. I just haven't felt this way about any Big Brother season since...well, BBCan7, so perhaps it's the cowardly gameplay for me?

Hey r/eagles

Just a quick question, last year I used r/nflstreams to watch the majority of games... either that or out at the bar. But the frame rate and definition is too low so figured this year I'd go with a different route. Cut the cord last year FYI. I generally like watching the post game on CSN but it's not a necessity just as long as I get some sort of post game.

Just here looking for a recommendation; Hulu Live, NFL Network, Sling (I don't think they get CSN because of Comcast blocking it), PlayStation VUE.

Just what's the best experience you've had with any of these?

Thanks! Go Birds, Fuck Dallas

The signal for most of the channels in our area is broadcast from those large towers near Manayunk. If you're in Fort Washington you should have no issues with reception. Check this map if you want to be sure:

Just need to pick up one of these: https://www.amazon.com/1byone-Upgraded-Amplifier-Channels-Amplified/dp/B00IF70QCW/ref=lp_172665_1_4?s=audio-video-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1563916929&sr=1-4

and you'll be set.

I'm a little further north than you and have no issues doing this after cutting the cord. Definitely the way to go, and basically free after buying the antenna.

6ABC Philly is super hard to pick up as it is VHF-Low. My 1ByOne antenna most of the time is able to pick it up (I am in South Jersey about 15 miles directly south from the tower). 1byOne antenna here.

I added Locast to my Roku which doesn't have Philadelphia yet (coming soon), but it lets me watch New York's ABC so if there are national abc shows or college football you want to watch you can try to watch them on there. If it's local news and stuff you are looking for on ABC then you'd have to go the Vue/Yttv/DTVNOW route if you can't get it through antenna.

Cord cutters of r/Seahawks, how do you plan to watch this year? [R]

1 year, 7 months agochesterjosiah posted submission on Seahawks.
Sept. 4, 2018

Hey y'all! I was hoping to solicit ideas from your brilliant minds for watching the hawks this upcoming year. The home I live in currently does not have a cable subscription and an antenna is not an option due to location, but im in the greater seattle area. Ideally, i'd like to cast a stream to my tv via chromecast, but would like to avoid using illegal streams/VPN if possible and keep things on the cheap.

I DO have access to comcast cable subscription via login although the box remains in another home - it seems like xfinity streaming blocks the live sports unless youre physically in the home with the cable box and the yahoo sports app will stream the game but block casting to a TV. Fox sports go app seemed to work for preseason, but the Broncos and Seahawks is not listed on their upcomong TV schedule. Lame!

So, how do yall do it? Is PS Vue or some other streaming subscription the only way to go here? I don't want to pay twice for something I already own but don't have access to!

Appreciate the help!

On that page it says for all the green channels all you need is a good indoor antenna, so something like this should be good.

If you want the rest, which you probably don't need you could go bigger and setup outdoors.

Remember you house will probably block some signals, so you may want to try and put the antenna higher or on the North side of your house.

Antenna Help [R]

1 year, 9 months agobhelliom23 posted submission on cordcutters.
July 11, 2018

Hey all -

I've been resolutely trying to get my mother off of cable, and currently, we've been trying to use OTA and Tablo to provide her with Primetime and Daytime TV, and DVR, but we've been effectively stymied by the reception.

I've read the Antenna guide, and after our first unsuccessful try with an antenna, we tried the Winegard FlatWave FL-5000.

After reading the guide, I figured with the signal shown on our TVFool results that either of these two antennas would have been sufficient, but currently, the only channel that she regularly watches that has consistent signal is ABC (2), but even this has a lot of what looks like low bitrate distortion, something I remember from VLC at times. CBS (6) never loads on Tablo, NBC (8) for a short time, but will often disconnect.

To explain the setup, because the antenna might not be to blame: The Tablo sits near the window that the antenna is on (south face of the building, towards the antenna), the Roku Streaming Stick is maybe 10 feet across the room, with the wireless router maybe 30-40 feet in the next room. The doors are often left open, and everything else on the Roku is super fast.

We did, at one point, have the Tablo direcly wired into the router, which put the antenna on the north side of the building, and we've since had better overall performance since moving it to it's current location, using wireless.

I'm not sure if buying another new antenna will do the job, but I figured if anyone would know, you guys would. Thanks!

Edit: Double Pane windows causing interference. Mounting the antenna on the outside fixed it real good.

Rabbit Ears vs Flat Antennas [R]

2 years, 11 months agoheddhunter posted submission on cordcutters.

I live in San Francisco, less than a mile from the Sutro Tower which broadcasts most of the HDTV channels in the city. I can see it clearly out my window. I decided to stop paying Dish's exorbitant prices and switch to a Tivo Roamio OTA. I got a cheap little flat antenna from Amazon and it is a little frustrating in that the signal strength varies from fine to unusable on the same channel, apparently randomly. One day it will record something perfectly, the next day it's a mess of digital noise.

I bought a bigger flat antenna with a signal booster and it is terrible, much worse reception. It basically doesn't work at all. I'm going to return it.

Would rabbit ears be better? Has anyone switched from flat to rabbit ears with success? I don't have the option of installing anything outside at the moment. According to tvfool I am less than 1 mile from the tower, I should be able to get everything with a piece of tinfoil wrapped around a coke can!

I'm really only interested in the big guns: fox, abc, cbs, nbc, cw. Don't care about the foreign language/home shopping/bible channels.

The first antenna I got is a small 1byone: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IF70QCW/ref=ohauidetailpageo01s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's about 90% reliable, which is almost worse than totally non functional because you never know when it's going to fail. eg: Thursday's Late Show With Colbert is fine, Friday's is unwatchable. The Tivo's signal strength page shows most things coming between 60-70, occasionally dropping down to 40-50, which is when things get dicey.

The amplified one is Vansky: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FUB4ZG8/ref=ohauidetailpageo00s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Signal strength with this is unusable. 30-40. I tried with and without the amp, doesn't make any difference.

Start cheap. Unfold a paperclip and stick it in your coax port. Seriously.

If that's not enough, try some cheap rabbit ears or something like this:

You should be able to pick up all of those 88 degrees channels in green with a very cheap and simple solution. Try to have it facing directly east (preferably out a window).

I am open to suggestions for which antenna to use, or any other advice for better reception.

Update: The Mohu Leaf works great! After some adjustment, finding just the right spot (window facing east) I'm getting all the major networks and then some. 10/10 would recommend.

My understanding is that the game is only on comcast sports, well guess I can't watch. Even though I'm in the area, am I really gonna have to stream this illegally? I have dish in case anyone is wondering.

EDIT: Thank you for all of the responses, I will probably end up streaming from one of the subreddits. Just wish I could DVR it so that I could go to the gym, only miss the beginning, and come back and catch up on what I missed.

Anyone else having consistent issues with over-the-air reception for NBC? Not sure what's causing the problem. [R]

I posted this to r/cordcutters, but I didn't get a solution; just curious if there might be something unique to the area.

Relevant to my question: I live less than ten miles from the NBC broadcast tower, the antenna is about thirty feet up, and the angle of the antenna is within ten degrees of the direction of the tower. My antenna is nothing special, but it's rated for about 35 miles, so it should be plenty strong.

What I find perplexing is I get crystal clear reception for pretty much all the other OTA channels, including CBS. I mention that tidbit because the two towers are roughly a mile apart (you can see the line of sight to my house here), so it you'd think if something was interfering with line-of-sight, it would impact both.

I had the same problem with that channel when I had the bunny-ear antenna. My other channels worked fine too. I'm NW of the station. Ended up switching to a flat antenna like this and taped it on a high spot on the wall and it seems to work well now.

Can you recommend an antenna based on my tV Fool report? [R]

Hi all,

TV Fool report here

My house is an attached rowhome located not very far from a broadcasting tower. I could conceivably set up a rooftop outdoor antenna, but my preference would be to get by with an indoor one if that's possible.

We've been using a cheapo FlatWave leaf antenna for the past few months and it works okay but not great - picture is pretty great but certain channels cut out and/or stall a little too frequently. I mostly care about getting the basic networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, etc...

Could you guys recommend a good antenna for my situation?

Much appreciated!

No, no amp. I'm pretty sure this is the antenna we've got; it only plugs into the TV, and I see that the amplified models of this particular antenna have a separate component we don't have.

Get an HD Antenna and you'll be able to get CBS, NBC, FOX and ABC. They're $15-$20 on Amazon.

As the /u/TheTrashyOne mentioned, there's nothing that makes an antenna "digital", that's just how the rf carrier is modulated nowadays. You might be able to get by with a pair of rabbit ears, or need something a little more elaborate. It really depends on how close you are to the transmitters and what is between you and them. Head over to https://www.antennaweb.org/ and punch in your address if you are in the states. It will give you an idea of what you can receive and with what type of antenna. If you are fairly close to the transmitters or line of site you might be able to get by with something like this or one of its variants - http://www.amazon.com/Antenna-1byone-Super-Digital-Indoor/dp/B00IF70QCW

So I'm thinking about getting rid of Comcast and see that Amazon has 50 mile range HD antennas for $30. Anyone in West Chester have one? I barely watch tv, except for HBO and Phillies games, but can deal with HBOgo and the MLB app for now.. So anyone have any luck?

I bought the above HD antenna from Amazon. It's not bad. I've mainly used it to watch the NHL playoffs when they're on NBC. Otherwise, my fiancée and I stream shows and sports (mainly the MLB and NBCSN apps) through our Apple TV's (we cut the cord 4 months ago).

If you need a good digital tuner option try http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IYETYX8 -- I bought this and am very happy with it. You'll need an antenna to hook up to it -- usually a good idea to get one you can put on a window like http://www.amazon.com/Antenna-1byone-Super-Digital-Indoor/dp/B00IF70QCW -- and you're good to go. One nice thing about the tuner I got is you can hook an external USB hard drive or USB flash drive up to it and get DVR capabilities.

Indoor TV Antenna reception - East Bay, Channels? [R]

Is there a list of channels somewhere of all the stations in east bay sf? Are the ones on AOL accurate? http://tvlistings.aol.com/listings/ca/san-francisco/over-the-air/94162 I can't seem to get Fox, not sure which channel it is but according to online it said it was 2.1 - 2.2.

For reference, I live close to Wildcat canyon (on the west side) near San Pablo Rd.

I bought one of these antennas on amazon to see the channels over the air, I get somewhere around 15-25. Kinda sucks, although I haven't looked into optimizing my reception.

I just got a new antenna yesterday. i found this site which shows all channels and (on a map) where they are broadcast from so you can point your antenna for best reception. Put in your address to get started. I was surprised. I thought they all came from Sutro Tower, but some come from Mt. Tam, some form San Bruno mountain, some from Santa Rosa, etc... Pretty interesting!

I just got this cheap antenna yesterday to replace my home made antenna. It does a much better job and is easy to hide behind a picture.

BTW, I mounted my antenna just behind my TV (in the center of the house). I live on top of a hill in the Sunset Dist. My TV was able to find 47 channels. I can get most everything however channel 3 doesn't come in, but 11 is the same network (I think) which I can get it if I point my antenna in a different direction.

OTA Antenna recommendations? [R]

I'm trying to help my parents cut the cord and switch from DirecTV to OTA.

They live on the North West side of town in the Countryside area.

I've not had TV for years so I don't know what works in our market here.

It looks Like I'm going to have to get a new TV for Dad as while his Sony CRT has HDMI it apparently does not have a Digital Tuner :(

Hoping to pull in most of the English channels since they don't speak Spanish :)

I'd prefer Indoor units I think because I don't want to go on their roof and drill new holes in the house.

If I am reading that right, your folks should be able to get 4(NBC), 6(PBS), 9(ABC), and 13(CBS) with a TV mounted antenna. And 11(Fox) is in yellow. Honestly, those are the only channels I really watch. I disabled more than half because they were in Spanish.

Best bet would be to purchase an antenna like this one and just set it up at different places around the room and see what gives the best reception. If you don't get much or anything, then you might want to look into an outdoor antenna, but there are some nice cheap ones as well. You might not need to spend much, this is the antenna I have duct taped to my satellite dish and I get great reception, way better than the $40 flat antenna box with amplifier that was hung in the window.

Also, if you don't want to get your dad a new TV, you can get at digital converter box for $30-40 at walmart or amazon.
